January Homicide Toll

In the month of January this year, homicides more than doubled in major Bay Area cities. San Francisco had 11 (compared to just 5 in 2010), Oakland also played host to 11 (a drastic increase from 4), and San Jose saw 7 homicides (a major jump from 1) during the first part of 2011. Police say many of the murders were gang-related.
