Perhaps as penance for banning our precious Happy Meals, the Board of Supervisors has introduced a new piece of legislation that hopes to encourage mobile food vendors while simultaneously protecting any local eateries they might end up cannibalizing. From the Examiner:
Legislation introduced by Supervisor Bevan Dufty would require that businesses within 300 feet of where a mobile food operation applies to operate are notified of a permit application and given 30 days to object. If there is an objection, a hearing would be held to ultimately determine a permit issuance. No permits would be issued for locations in residential areas.
So far, the Board's City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee fully supports the proposal, which also eases the permit process and cuts application fees in half. The full board votes on the matter next week.
