This past weekend the Chron's food staff revealed their picks for the Rising Star Chefs of 2010, and it's an all-male slate this time around. Last year's list had two women on it, and most years there is at least one. But as Michael Bauer laments in his intro, they tried hard to "diversify the pool, [but] these guys kept rising to the top."
The honorees this year are Charlie Kleinman, exec chef at Wexler's; Josh Skenes at Saison; Timothy Hollingsworth, chef de cuisine at The French Laundry; Perry Hoffman at Etoile up in Napa; and John Paul Carmona at Manresa in Los Gatos.
Sort of notably absent from the list is Melissa Perello, who's gotten a boatload of praise for her new Castro restaurant Frances. But as it happens, Melissa already received the Rising Star honor back in 2002 when she was just 25 and working at Charles Nob Hill.
