As promised, we completely slept through the 5:14 a.m. bells and sirens commemorating the 100th anniversary of the big quake -- but some of you more diligent San Franciscans didn't, to our collective benefit. As promised, commenter Ed sent along his thoughts and pictures -- pass along your story, or a link to your blog, in the comments if you're so inclined.

The perspicacious Pat Murphy and Luke Thomas went, shot, and uploaded, as did Flickr user honan, whose picture appears above. Local news stations have downloadable clips of the event today too.

And as always, the Chron's got the crack reporters and photogs on scene too -- and it was pretty cool to wake up this morning and read the version (.jpg) of the April 18, 1906 front page that no one actually saw. That quake series has been fun to read.

Here's to you, indominable spirit of San Francisco!
