We weren't even stoned and we had to laugh. But after we had a chance to read an advance copy of It's Just a Plant: A Children's Story of Marijuana posted online by the good folks at the Magic Propaganda Mill, we realized that this is a much, much better idea than it would seem at first glance. From the "About the Book" page:
Despite our best efforts to criminalize, restrict and otherwise hide it in every way we can...children learn about marijuana.

In fact, from the schoolyard to the classroom, kids are flooded with information about it. Unfortunately, most "drug facts" are more frightening than educational, blaming pot for everything from homelessness to teenage pregnancy to international terrorism.

Many parents are not comfortable discussing marijuana use beyond "just say no." Some have tried marijuana themselves. Others fear that any discussion of marijuana falling short of outright denouncement may be perceived by their children as permission to try it on their own. In short, parents have few sources of information that puts the safety of their kids before politics.

Ain't that the truth. Of course, people like Tony Andrade would have a field day with this, but then people like Tony Andrade would seem to prefer their children learn everything about the world from the bible and talk radio. It's Just a Plant, on the other hand, presents specific information about the history of the plant and the public policy surrounding it, in a way that certainly does not encourage experimentation by children. The illustrations from Ricardo Cortes are colorful and engaging.

For more information, peruse the FAQ. You can purchase the book directly from the publisher on their web site. While the Magic Propaganda Mill is a New York-based company, we know that there are a lot of Bay Area parents who might want an alternative source to help educate their children about hemp and marijuana, instead of leaving it up to television, textbooks and other children.
