Also thrown in was some gypsy music, hip-hop, and whatever you want to call this new rock operetta thing The Decemberists can't keep themselves from playing, as well as several cupcake hovercrafts, and a steampunk sideshow with old-timey games hosted by Mister Gnogiurzauchshoff's Traveling Midway of Curiosities and Delights. And both days sold out! Weather shifts aside, the Treasure Island Music Fest was once again the swellest and most human-scaled festival we've ever been to -- and as Thao, she of the Get Down Stay Down, put it, it's simply "the bestival."

The two-day long Treasure Island Music Festival kicks off on Saturday, and the line-up is pretty swell -- with the likes of Passion Pit, The Streets, Girl Talk, Brazilian Girls and MGMT on Saturday; and Grizzly Bear, Beirut, The Decemberists, The Walkmen, Yo La Tengo, and The Flaming Lips on Sunday. ALSO, the 12-2pm slots both days are filled with fun local acts like Murs, The Limousines, Crown City Rockers, Sleepy Sun, and Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, so show up early and represent.

The best part about this festival, in our eyes, is its size. Unlike at your Coachellas, and your Outside Lands, and your Hardly Strictly Bluegrasses, there's no having to choose between two acts you love or run around between stages. The Treasure Island stages are a mere few hundred feet apart, and the acts don't overlap. All you do is shift your attention left and right, and the laziest and most stoned can choose never to move their blankets at all and just camp out in between the two stages. Sure, the beer's still expensive and it's a bit of schlep to get out to the island, but there's a reason so many great acts have signed on this year -- it's a special little experience. (Tickets still available.)

SF Man Arrested for Kidnapping, Sexual Assault in Twin Peaks

Alex Thomas Owen, 41, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 21-year-old foreign exchange student. Alex Thomas Owen, 41, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 21-year-old foreign exchange student. According to Appeal/BCN, "the woman was sightseeing on Treasure Island early that morning when Alex Thomas Owen, 41, offered her a ride." Owen then allegedly took her to the Twin Peaks neighborhood in his 1993 Lincoln Town Car and asked her to have sex with him. When the woman refused his sexual advances -- because who wouldn't want to screw some butt-ugly 41-year-old pig driving a '90s Lincoln? -- he struck and sexually assaulted. Luckily, she managed to escape and call police. Owens was later arrested at his Ashbury Heights home. Also, according to the California's Megan's Law site, he was "previously convicted of lewd acts with a child under age 14."

35 Gallons of Oil & Diesel Spill Into Bay

Yesterday afternoon, a tugboat sank off Treasure Island, spilling an estimated 35 gallons or oil and diesel fuel into the Bay, creating a sheen a "<a href="http://cbs5.com/local/treasure.island.oil.2....

SF News

bay

oil_spill

sf_bay

treasure_island

Brock Keeling

Yesterday afternoon, a tugboat sank off Treasure Island, spilling an estimated 35 gallons or oil and diesel fuel into the Bay, creating a sheen a "400-foot debris field" sheen of oil surrounding parts of Treasure Island and the Berkeley Marina. "The Coast Guard contracted a private company to clean up the sheen," according to reports, which managed to contain the fuel before day's send. Also, allegedly, no wildlife was harmed or contaminated during the spill. So, that's good. The boat, christened and used by the U.S. Navy for 33 years before retiring in 1974, was docked pretty low in the water before sinking.
The Wenonah
