San Francisco parents may not be surprised to learn that they're paying more than their suburban counterparts, but a new report courtesy of Care.com and Zillow, childcare and real estate websites, respectively, has put an average figure on the cost differential for us to bandy about, and it's $12,560 a year.

The report's comparison, covered here by the Business Times, accounts for childcare expenses, property taxes, and housing costs in US cities and their suburbs, contrasting the two to write that "city-dwelling families nationwide spend around $9,073 more per year to cover basic housing and child care costs than ‘burb-dwelling families." That puts our differential above average, but it's a fraction of the size of the margin between New York City living with kids and the cost of raising them in the suburbs. That difference was $71,237 a year, per the report.

San Francisco made the cost/savings ranking at number five after NY, Chicago, Dallas, and DC (in that order). By contrast, there were many metropoles where living within the city proper was actually cheaper with the kids than setting up shop in the suburbs would be. Philadelphia, for example, topped that list, with suburban families paying $13,849 more, on average, than they would to raise kids in the city.

Though it's unlikely to shock Bay Area parents in the city or suburbs, much less cause anyone to run screaming in one direction or the other, the report provides some reasoning as to San Francisco's reputation as a city of adult children with no children themselves. That impression was recently borne by reporting from the New York Times in January, who named us again the most childless city in the country, an account preceded by a planning report on "the challenge of keeping families in San Francisco." Maybe provide them $12,000 or so in benefits and they'll stick around?

We're not sure what's going on in Pleasanton. We're not sure we even want to know. Sounds scarier than Eddy and Taylor at 3 a.m., at least for us. (We can only imagine what will happen when the SF housing crisis -- and that's just what it is, a crisis -- flushes out the low- to middle-income LGBT folks back into the suburbs.) Anyway, here's a full report:

In Olivehurst, California, a Yuba County suburb North of Sacramento, one local taco truck was apparently supplementing its income with some narcotic secret menu items. According to the local paper of record, the Marysville Appeal-Democrat, the taco truck in question was stocked with over $10,000 in meth, weed and drug money. "They were dealing both tacos and drugs," said Martin Horan, commander of the local NET-5 narcotics task force.

During the sting operation hilariously dubbed "Operation Dirty Taco," agents with NET-5 stalked the rolling taco kitchen for three months like some kind of hungry foodie/meth addict after learning that crystal and weed were among the items for sale. On Wednesday, agents served warrants at four addresses connected to the taco truck, only to discover a larger network of drug trafficking going on behind the scenes.

At a home on the 4300 block of Evelyn Drive in Olivehurst — a street not unlike your typical suburban cul-de-sac — agents found four ounces of methamphetamine buried in a hole beneath a chicken coop. The 160 marijuana plants seized by the task force were also found growing out back of the chicken coop. In addition to the drugs, cops seized around $8,500 in cash — not your biggest meth operation, if Breaking Bad has taught us anything, but nothing to sneeze at in suburban Sactown.

Brothers Juan and Ernesto Paez-Olague, ages 22 and 25 respectively, were booked into the Yuba County Jail on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale, possession of marijuana for sale, conspiracy and sale of drugs near a school. They are currently in custody with bail set at 50 grand apiece. 40-year-old Saturnino Rodriguez was also busted in the case, but will dodge jail time for medical reasons.

Agents told the local CBS affiliate that the tacos were not very good. Although the truck's homebase at the Taqueria El Jaliscience, where the truck is currently parked and the rest of the family may not have known what the two brothers were up to, got high marks on Yelp.

The local CBS affiliate in Sacramento has the video report:

The skewered peahen has since gone missing — probably so it could die with some dignity rather than having to be shown all over the evening news — but Ken and Judy are still on the hunt for the peahen poacher who trespassed on their property.

The couple believes the peahen may still be alive and walking around, but they seem worried about how the bird will get along with that an arrow sticking through it. As Judy told CBS, "You would expect her to lay down and die, and she’s just walking around with this thing sticking out of both sides of her."

The Reeds apparently keep the muster of peacocks on their twenty acres of property outside Vacaville because they help keep the rattlesnakes away. As an incentive to anyone who might be able to help them avenge the death of their beloved avian snake deterrent, the couple is offering a modest $500 reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

This week, LAist invited five Guest Day Editors from the blogLAsphere to join them: Green LA Girl, Fred Camino of MetroRiderLA, Zuma Dogg, the LA City Nerd and previous LAist editor, Carolyn Kellogg. On Wednesday, the DEA raided 10 local medical marijuana clinics while TARGET's newest three-story store soft-launched to almost no one.
Austinist welcomed the name change of a local lake to honor Lady Bird Johnson, and was surprised to find that Austin is a model for Iraqi reconstruction efforts. Nonstop rains of the past two months have led to a cricket infestation, plus A university professor claimed that obese girls are less likely to attend college, and another report showed that Austin's suburbs are among the fastest growing in the nation. Meanwhile, locals are up in arms over a secret Spoon show.

Banner week for SFist as the site's new editor introduced himself -- hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF's mayoral race, only SFist had the (insert tongue firmly into cheek) hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Coverage of a protest vs. gentrification spawned a fantastic debate amongst SFist's readers. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with "open mic night" and sang a custom version of Madonna's "Borderline" to a much-beleaguered board member.

Phillyist has had a busy week, looking for power outlets while liveblogging the First Annual BlogPhiladelphia "unconference." (Here's day 1 and day 2 of their coverage, and a video from the event.) They also interviewed Chris Funk of the Decemberists (since those guys are in town this weekend to play with a local orchestra), reviewed that little indie film about the wizard child, and helped out with tips on how to act if you run into that annoying ex of yours. Finally, they warned the suburbs to Beware of the Blob!

For LAist, it was a week of new beginnings. Soccer Star, David Beckham, made his official move to Los Angeles just in time for LAist's Neighborhood Project, which will cover the 170+ neighborhoods in the city. They interviewed the Los Angeles Fire Department and found that they may be the most Web 2.0 savvy government office in the world. In other government fun, a bill in the state senate is being pushed through to ensure that a particular person remains in office indefinitely. Speaking of things that remain forever, you have probably seen TV shows and movies that were shot at the rickety-almost-alling-over Lacy Street Studios.

You might have Duck Tours in your city by now, Bostonist has been watching them roll the streets and rivers for years -- now there are two, and a court case. A couple weeks ago news came out that former governor, now presidential hopeful Mitt Romney strapped his dog to the roof on family vacations, now blogs have gone to the dogs. A new name for a subway stop has Bostonist coming up with their own suggestions. They said goodbye to a beloved by some, hated by others, personality. Oh, and, as usual in Boston, Sox fans believe.

We may be crafty, but that doesn't mean we don't enjoy spending hours in front of a TV with some good video games once and a while. We'd love to tell you that we spent most of our childhood knee deep in crayons and paper-mâché, covered in finger paint, but we grew up in the suburbs of Jersey and in-between trips to the mall we played video games. Zelda, Mario Brothers, Pitfall, Pole Position, X-men, we like to think those pixilated masterpieces influenced our crafty minds. Sure, we can get with some Wii, but when it comes down to it, we prefer 8 bit graphics. So we were thrilled to see this crocheted Atari set on Craft's blog yesterday, and even more giddy when we saw the TV with Pitfall on the screen. We did some digging, and found some more arts and crafts inspired by video games we thought you should see. What a wonderful marriage of two things we love.

The amazing crocheted Atari above and the TV below were both created by Christine Domanic. As Craft mentions in their post, Christine also has an Etsy shop and starting in May she will be doing custom orders for any Atari game you'd like to have crocheted. Pretty fantastic.

It's a movie that was out for a bout a week, starring Kate Winslet about people making sexy time in the suburbs. In fact, from what we read, it was a movie about alienation and angst in suburbia and you never see enough of those kind of movies. Also from that movie, Jackie Earle Haley won for Best Supporting Actor for playing a child molester and we think that's awesome just because he played the immortal Kelly Leak in the Bad News Bears. Could this mean we could be years away from an award going to the guy who played Tanner?

Also of note, the winner of the Best Actor award is Mr. Borat himself, Sacha Baron Cohen. A lot of people seem to think he's Best Actor material mainly because he never dropped out of his character at any point in the movie. Plus, people who go out of their way to do sacrifice something for the movie-- play ugly, gain weight,etc.-- always seem to get award nominations and we can't think of anyone who sacrificed more for any movie considering he wrestled naked with that big, fat hairy dude. Talk about going all out for the movie.

Here's the other winners
Best Director- Paul Greengrass, Flight 93 (we heard this was good but we think even a Holocaust movie would have been more fun).
Best Actress- Helen Mirren, The Queen (because all old English actresses with a background in Shakespeare have to win awards-- it's in the Film Critics rulebook)
Best Original Screenplay- Rian Johnson, Brick (didn't it start the dude from "Third Rock From The Sun"? It did!)
Best Adapted Screenplay- Director Todd Field and Tom Perrotta, Little Children
Best Supporting Actress- Adriana Barraza, Babel

SFist liked Lost in Translation because it accurately captured how disorienting traveling can be. Singer Brendan Benson evoked a similar feeling when he spoke with us on Friday as he was preparing for his show at Great America. When we mentioned that we generally ask people questions about the area, Brendan instantly began to dish on his time in the East Bay, places to eat, and the fact that city dwellers tend to look down on the suburbs.

If you haven’t checked out Brendan’s latest release, The Alternative to Love on V2 records, do so now. Also keep your eyes out for an upcoming collaboration with fellow rock city dweller Jack White. Just don’t expect anything good to eat in Detroit.

What’s Your Favorite City?
I love Detroit, but based on fact that my family and friends are there, and I grew up there, so I have a certain affinity for it. I like New Orleans a lot. I grew up in Harvey, on the west bank. I hate to think of what happened there because of Katrina. I’m sure it hasn’t changed permanently, but I felt genuinely sad about it possibly never being the same.

What parts of it are you most worried about?
Nothing specific, it was as if, it’s part of my child hood, the way I was hearing about it [Katrina] was that the city was completely wiped out, that it was gone. The way I understood it, I was mortified, like a piece of me was gone.

The Bay Area Is CopyFighting

So a bunch of anarchist yutzes from <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercuryn...

Arts & Entertainment

Bay Area

bloggers

blogs

Creative Commons

crime

gangs

hospital

Law

love

media

mission street

SF News

News+Sports

people

pictures

protest

publicity

sf

SFist Jackson

suburbs

The Bay

The Bay Area

United States

rita

So a bunch of anarchist yutzes from the suburbs decided to protest G8 at that hotbed crossroads of capitalism, 23rd Street and Bartlett, and in the melee, threw a hammer at a cop's head. The cop's in the hospital and three yutzes are in the clink. Our feeling is, what's the point of having all these Sureno and Norteno Mission Street gangs if they're not actually going to protect us from outsider threats?
But we'll save all that for tomorrow's Blotter. SF Indybay was at the protest, and posted some pictures and coverage of the fight. KRON 4's new aggregator-blog, The Bay Area Is Talking, which was liveblogging it, then put up the Indybay pictures on their site.

Bloggers love bloggers, right? More publicity makes for higher hit counts, right? Nope. Indybay sent an angry note to KRON accusing them of copyright infringement and demanding that the pictures be taken down. KRON 4 said they thought the use of the pictures constituted permissible fair use, but agreed to take them down and link to them instead.

There's some fascinating ironies here about anarchists invoking the august majesty of federal United States Code section 17, a group called "IndyBay" censoring the content of another independent media provider (yup, KRON's indie), a member of the mainstream media going all Creative Commons, and leftists avoiding publicity for their public demonstration -- but mostly, it seems to have devolved into a fight where people are mixing up copyright and trademark law.

So apparently everyone was shocked -- shocked! -- to hear that someone wanted to kill our dearest President George W. Bush. Of course, SFist's first thought was to call most of our friends to make sure it wasn't them. After all, George Bush probably doesn't come here very often (ever?) for a reason. Heck, if we got close enough, we might even take one for the team. We say 'might' because we don't want the Alien and Sedition Acts thrown in our face.

Of course the real culprit is one Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, a 23 year-old U.S. Citizen. We would like to blame the freewheeling, anything-goes, if-it-feels-good-do-it mentality of people in the hellhole of amoral liberalism known as Falls Church, VA. All those pot-smoking, nudist hot-tubbers raise nothing but directionless youth who look to groups like Al Qaeda for the spiritual guidance and sense of purpose that they can't find amongst the Godless heathens known to live in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Not like our forthright young Christian households up in Marin County. Of course Abu Ali says that evidence that will be used against him was beaten out of him while he was detained in Saudi Arabia, and accused the United States of using their influence to have Saudi authorities arrest and torture him. He says he has the scars to prove it, but we're sure they're probably from some kinky orgy or naturalist healing practice that he participated in while attending school in modern day Sodom, Alexandria, Virginia.
