They’ve closed a few since their peak, but according to the San Francisco Business Times, there are currently 59 “company-owned Starbucks stores in San Francisco” (a total that doesn’t include Starbucks locations inside big-box stores like Target or Safeway, as those locations are licensed to other companies).

But there are about to be seven fewer Starbucks in SF. That same Business Times report broke the news Tuesday that Starbucks is closing seven San Francisco stores, with an announced closing date of October 22.

Image: Starbucks.com

There are obviously still quite a few Starbucks stores in San Francisco, as seen above (a map that does not show all of them). The Starbucks store locator still shows dozens and dozens of Starbucks locations currently operating in San Francisco, some within a block or two of each other, and a very large cluster of them near Union Square and downtown.

Image via Google Maps

And all of the shuttering SF Starbucks are squarely within that cluster. (They’re marked in red on the map above.) Given that office vacancies are way up and foot traffic is struggling to return back to pre-pandemic levels, you can imagine why Starbucks is making this call.

According to an email obtained by the Business Times, Starbucks regional vice president for Northern California Jessica Borton told district managers that there were “several factors” behind the decision to close the shops.

“Determining how and where we invest is done through a standard process of evaluating our store portfolio annually to determine where we can best meet our community and customers’ needs,” Borton’s email continued. “This year those discussions have resulted in making the very difficult decision to close seven of the stores in our area.”

People may jump all over employees’ recent unionization efforts leading to the closures, though as Eater SF points out, neither of the two unionized SF stores (Castro, Inner Sunset) are among the closures. Many SF Starbucks shops’ recently shifted toward removing all of their seating, and that may well have had a negative impact on business. But the likeliest explanation is that those seven Starbucks just weren’t performing well in already saturated areas.

And as Starbucks made a point of telling the Chronicle, they recently opened three new shops in SF, and are investing $2.5 million in renovating other SF locations.

Related: Dreams Of Pumpkin Spice Merlot Nixed As Starbucks Withdraws Beer And Wine Applications [SFist]

Image: Kevin Y. via Yelp

Castro Starbucks Votes to Unionize, May Become First Unionized Starbucks In San Francisco

Hold onto your gift cards, as the chain-store unionization movement in SF just got a shot from the Starbucks at 18th and Castro Streets, which voted to unionize in results confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

SF News

starbucks

labor union

labor unions

castro

castro district

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

coffee

Joe Kukura

Hold onto your gift cards, as the chain-store unionization movement in SF just got a shot from the Starbucks at 18th and Castro Streets, which voted to unionize in results confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

We learned to live without the Castro Starbucks, nicknamed “Bearbucks,” when it closed between last Christmas and this past April over plumbing issues. But you may want to save your Starbucks gift cards to use at that particular Starbucks at 4094 18th Street (at Castro Street), because something big has been brewing there. Just three months after two Starbucks locations in Santa Cruz became the first unionized Starbucks shops in California, SFGate reports that the Castro Starbucks has also voted to unionize.

If certified, it will be the first unionized Starbucks in San Francisco.

"We're very proud of the results today," James Kreiss, an employee at the Castro Starbucks. "We hope this win encourages our San Francisco sister stores to seek a union too. Staff and customers have gone through the ringer this past year with inconsistent staffing and store availability — we appreciate the support our community has shown us and the continued support as we begin the long process of negotiations with Starbucks."

The vote was reportedly 7-2 in favor of unionizing, with 15 eligible voters, only nine of whom cast ballots, per SFGate.

The Castro District’s supervisor, Rafael Mandelman, said in a statement on Twitter, "Many congratulations to the Castro Starbucks employees on their historic vote to become San Francisco's first unionized Starbucks store. In an era of growing income inequality, successful efforts to organize low-wage private sector workers remind us that there is still power in a union and San Francisco is still a union town."

Many congratulations to the Castro Starbucks employees. The chain is asking for a halt to mail-in balloting in these votes, alleging improper conduct by the NLRB. (It's unclear if mail ballots were used in this election.) Oh, and those Santa Cruz Starbucks that unionized in May? Employees at one of them have already gone on strike.

Related: Employees at Two Santa Cruz Starbucks Locations Have Voted To Unionize [SFist]

Image: Don O. via Yelp

Employees at Two Santa Cruz Starbucks Locations Have Voted To Unionize

The first California Starbucks shops to unionize are both in Santa Cruz, after two separate Starbucks locations’ employees voted overwhelmingly to unionize on Wednesday.

SF News

starbucks

Santa Cruz

labor union

labor unions

Joe Kukura

The first California Starbucks shops to unionize are both in Santa Cruz, after two separate Starbucks locations’ employees voted overwhelmingly to unionize on Wednesday.

You may have heard of some recent, nascent, and seemingly longshot efforts by Amazon employees to unionize, and a handful of these efforts have actually been successful. Others have been unsuccessful, and even the successful efforts have seen the union organizer employees suddenly get canned. But today’s New York Times has a piece on employees at the coffee chain Starbucks having more success at unionizing, as “workers at more than 250 [Starbucks] stores have filed for elections and the union has prevailed at a vast majority of the locations that have voted.”

Now add a double-shot of successful Starbucks unionization right here in NorCal. The Chronicle reports that workers at two separate Santa Cruz Starbucks locations voted to unionize Wednesday, and both were lopsided votes in favor of the union. Employees at the Starbucks at 1901 Mission Street voted 15-2 to unionize, and shortly after in a separate vote, workers at the 745 Ocean Street store ratified their union effort in a 13-1 vote.

“It’s empowering to know that we can fight a multibillion-dollar corporation and win,” Ocean Street employee Kayla Cabral told the Chronicle. “From here on out, I think we’re going to see a lot more union Starbucks.”

One recurring theme in these multiplying Starbucks union efforts is that workers are citing a lack of security. According to KSBW, employees complain that “the Santa Cruz store isn’t doing enough to protect its employees, claiming the location can be dangerous and experiences high rates of harassment and other hazardous situations.”

For their part, Starbucks put out a statement saying, “We are listening and learning from the partners in these stores as we always do across the country,” and,“We respect our partner’s [sic] right to organize and are committed to following the [National Labor Relations Board] process.”

KQED points out that “more than 20 Starbucks stores in California have started the process to unionize,” and another Starbucks in Santa Cruz will hold their vote in June. But the Northern California Starbucks efforts to unionize have already successfully crossed the finish line, and the college town of Santa Cruz was the first to slug it out.

Related: Tartine Workers Vote to Unionize In Tight 93-90 Vote [SFist]

Image: Adam C. via Yelp

Dozens of Bay Area Starbucks Locations Are 'Temporarily Closed' or Have Reduced Store Hours Amid Staffing Problems

You might've had trouble getting your bitter-tasting coffee fix recently in the Bay Area as multiple local Starbucks locations "temporarily closed” out of blue — with many more regional stores now operating reduced hours, too.

SF News

starbucks

Matt

You might've had trouble getting your bitter-tasting coffee fix recently in the Bay Area as multiple local Starbucks locations "temporarily closed” out of blue — with many more regional stores now operating reduced hours, too.

Starbucks has had a rough past couple of years. Citing necessary changes spurred by COVID-19, the coffee mega-chain announced in late 2020 it would shutter over 600 stores across North America by 2022. However, Starbucks pledged in the fall of last year to commit to building another 500 stores across the continent — all of which will be designed to "outperform and offer better customer experience" than the ones they’re replacing. Sure, wonderful. Outstanding.

But the fact remains that working for America's largest coffee company has proven to be rife with burnout, unpaid overtime wages, and union-busting efforts made by upper management in certain locations. It's little wonder why many store employees have walked out or outright quit across the country. And it's this labor shortage — which has been exacerbated by employees taking necessary sick leave after testing positive for COVID-19 — that's the primary reason why a large number of Starbucks locations, including many in the Bay Area, have had to temporarily close or cut operating hours.

According to KRON4, a Starbucks in Walnut Creek has been closed since Monday — “Sorry for the inconvenience, our store is temporarily closed,” reads a sign outside that location's front door. Similar Starbucks closings have also been cited in at least three Oakland stores, as well.

In San Francisco alone, a visit to the Starbucks Store Finder tool will show nearly two dozen locations in the city that have either temporarily closed or have reduced their store hours to contend with labor shortages; a noticeable amount of SF's Starbucks locations are also described as now having mobile order pick-ups unavailable.

Starbucks released the following statement to the aforementioned news outlet in response to the widespread Bay Area closures:

As we have since the beginning of the pandemic, local leaders can, and do scale operations based on partner availability and local COVID-19 factors. When a store is experiencing a temporary staff shortage, we respond by reducing hours to be mindful that our partners aren’t overworked –prioritizing their health & well-being in our decision making. These decisions are made on a store-by-store and market-by-market basis, and our customers can check the Starbucks Locator on our website or app for their store’s current hours of operation.

Maybe this is just a sign from a certain higher, highly-caffeinated power to ditch the corporate coffee orders for those placed at local cafes, instead.

Related: The 14 Best Coffee Shops In San Francisco (A Definitive List)

Photo: Getty Image/Justin Sullivan

Murder Charge to Be Filed In Case of Woman Repeatedly Run Over at Millbrae Starbucks After Victim Dies

An attempted murder charge will be escalated to murder in San Mateo County in the case of a woman who was repeatedly struck and run over in a Millbrae parking lot on September 20, after the victim succumbed to her injuries Wednesday morning.

SF News

murder

Millbrae

starbucks

Jay Barmann

An attempted murder charge will be escalated to murder in San Mateo County in the case of a woman who was repeatedly struck and run over in a Millbrae parking lot on September 20, after the victim succumbed to her injuries Wednesday morning.

Police quickly arrested the suspect, 23-year-old Garrett Young, whose BMW SUV was seen on surveillance video hitting the woman at a high rate of speed and repeatedly running her over.
Oh, what a difference five years makes.

It was five years ago this month that San Francisco's first Target store opened to much pomp and celebration in the faux-Vegas splendor of the Metreon. Since then, four more have opened across the 7x7 — another one downtown on Bush Street, that one at Geary and Masonic, one on Ocean Avenue, and one that opened in July at the old Stonestown Borders/Sports Authority (designation determined by length of time in area). And now comes news that a sixth Target will be opening in the city, raising the question: Have we reached full Target saturation yet?

Like the Stonestown one, this Target is slotted for another former Sports Authority, a retail chain that closed all its locations after it went bankrupt then failed to find a buyer last year. The company's 1690 Folsom Street location, which based on Yelp reviews closed in June of 2016, has been sitting vacant ever since — a dicey proposition for a structure on Division Street, a location known for its persistent encampments of homeless people.

The perceived grittiness of the area didn't deter Target, it appears, even as the company's initial plans in 2014 to open four SF stores expanded with the Stonestown effort. As as reported by Hoodline in February, the retail giant first approached San Francisco's Planning Commission in February stating a desire for a sixth SF spot, asking "to lease the property, complete interior tenant improvements and limited exterior modifications such as new signage to convert it to a Target store."

SocketSite reports this week that unlike the other Targets in the city, which are the smaller "City Target" style stores with a limited selection of goods, the sixth one — right across from Rainbow Grocery, I'll note — will be a "full service" store, like the ones at Daly City's Serramonte Mall and (the far inferior one in) Colma.

Via the comments to their report, SocketSite also notes that the location's parking lot will boast 52 slots, but Target says that as it is "located in an area that is well-served by public transit...many of its customers may walk, bike, or utilize public transportation to access the site."

The 40,000 space will also include a "a full-service CVS Pharmacy and Starbucks," SocketSite reports. No word yet on if "Tally" the shelf-scanning robot will be allowed to transfer to SoMa from his(?) current position at their downtown location.

Did you know that Alphabet's drone division, Project Wing, had teamed up with Starbucks with the goal of delivering the chain's products to customers by drone? Well, it seems the nascent partnership just couldn't get off the ground as Bloomberg reports that the companies will go their separate ways. Sorry, no drone deliveries of pumpkin spice lattes are in your near future.

What's more, the publication notes that the decision comes at a time when Alphabet has frozen Project Wing hiring and told some employees to find jobs elsewhere within the company. Basically, according to an internal source that spoke with the paper, Project Wing costs too much to operate and isn't generating any real money. Meanwhile, an Alphabet spokesperson says things are trucking along just fine.

"Project Wing has the potential to remove a big chunk of the friction in how physical things are moved around in the world," the spokesperson explained. "What we’re doing now is developing the next phase of our technology, and as always are thinking in a very broad way about all the potential use cases for delivery by unmanned aerial systems."

One of those potential use cases was demonstrated in September when Project Wing teamed up with Chipotle to deliver burritos via drone. With that example to look to, the idea of flying coffee beans through the sky didn't seem so far fetched. And indeed, it was not the delivery logistics — or even finances — that apparently tanked the Starbucks deal. Rather, the coffee chain reportedly refused Alphabet's demands regarding access to customer data.

San Franciscans hoping to have a robot deliver them frothy seasonal beverages will just have to look elsewhere, it seems.

Eyeing the success of fancy "third-wave" coffee purveyors like Blue Bottle and Intelligentsia, Starbucks Chief Executive Howard Schultz today announced plans to roll out 1,000 high-end coffee bars. Reuters reports that the bars, under the "Reserve" brand, are targeted for opening in 2017 and will operate out of existing Starbucks cafes — kind of like a corporate pop-up with staying power, if you will.

Both the coffee served and the manner in which it is prepared will differ from the traditional Starbucks fare — facts which will be reflected in the price. An eight-ounce bag of Reserve coffee can costs as much as $50 (!), Consumerist tells us.

"Collaborating with our tasting team, our master roasters experiment until they unlock each coffee's inherent flavor qualities," Starbucks says of their Reserve line. "We don’t tell the bean how to taste — we listen to know what the bean has to offer so we can bring out the best flavor."

This move represents a definite play by Schultz to take Starbucks into the higher end market that has been defined by the likes of Blue Bottle for almost a decade. In addition to the 1,000 coffee bars which will open up inside of Starbucks around the US, Schultz has plans for an additional 1,000 Reserve-only cafes — although the timing on those is a little unclear.

“Everything we have created and learned about coffee has led us to this moment," Schultz said in a 2014 press release announcing the first Reserve shop in Seattle. "The Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting room is a multi-sensory experience that will transform the future of specialty coffee.”

Later that year, he told The Economic Times that he intended to "take people on a magical coffee ride." However, knowing San Franciscans' general snootiness about their pour-over, we're not sure it's a ride many here will want a ticket to.

According to the paper, the three locations that almost allowed you to drunkenly tell your boss with a straight face that you had "only stepped out to Starbucks for a quick cup" were 565 Clay Street in the Financial District, 280 King Street near AT&T Park and 685 Beach Street at Fisherman’s Wharf.

“The department hopes this sends a loud message to state regulators who supported these licenses that they need to recognize the concerns of our community and our local government,” said SFPD ABC liaison Lieutenant Dave Falzon.

The attempt to sell beer and wine was part of a larger move, called Starbucks Evenings, that sought to make the daytime hangouts double as evening chill spots. "We’ve always been your neighborhood morning stop—a place to help you start your day," reads marketing copy describing the nocturnal plan. "Now we’re bringing a little delight to your evenings too. [...] So take a moment to unwind, meet up with friends and enjoy a glass of wine and a delicious little something—with us."

Hmm, perhaps SFPD was just trying to save us all from our own bad taste?

Regarless, it looks like the company hasn't given up: “We will continue to thoughtfully assess the opportunity to expand the menu in the future while working with partnership with the city,” Starbucks spokeswoman Linda Mills explained to the Financial Times. So, come this holiday season, you may be able drink booze out of your Starbucks red cup after all.

When you need a cup of coffee — like, really need it — you don't always have the time and energy to seek out the hippest new joint and wait in their long-ass line. Sometimes, you have to hit whatever's nearby, right? Maybe that's what Millie the goat was thinking when she skipped any of the Bay Area's artisan offerings and wandered into a simple Starbucks Sunday.

According to a post on the City of Rohnert Park Police & Fire Facebook page, police were called to the Starbucks at the Wolf Den Plaza strip mall at 5:12 a.m. Monday on reports of a goat in the store.

CBS 5 reports that Starbucks staffers tried to give the goat a banana, "but she kept walking into the coffee shop and started chewing on a box." An "on duty sergeant promptly responded, took the goat into custody, and transported [her] to the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter," Rohnert Park Police & Fire wrote on Facebook.

The goat, later identified as "Millie," apparently lives around the corner from the Starbucks and "had simply gotten away from its home," ABC 7 reports.

When her guardians got word of her java junket, they headed to the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter and "sprung" her from the clink, Rohnert Park Police & Fire announced via Facebook.

Her guardians, ABC 7 reports, will be building Mille a new fence to prevent further brew-related breakouts.

Put on your pearls and clutch hard: Starbucks has come under fire after being accused of under filling their lattes in an effort to save money on milk, as KQED reports. The class action suit, filed by one San Diego resident and one San Francisco resident, claims the coffee giant "cheats purchasers by providing less fluid ounces in their lattes than represented." In fact, the suit accuses the coffee chain of under filling by approximately twenty-five percent, be it Tall, Grande, or Venti.

The suit goes on to say that Starbucks gets away with this by topping off the lattes with a "quarter-inch of foam," which is technically still milk, but whatever.

Starbucks claims the suit is without merit, adding, "If a customer is unhappy with their beverage preparation, then we are happy to remake it to their satisfaction." But for some, litigiousness comes easier than having to say "no foam, fill to the top."

The lawsuit seeks more than $5 million dollars in damages.

Far more egregious, however, is the accusation that Starbucks also cheats customers out of espresso pulls. Robert King of Auburn, California says he's been short-changed on his espresso drinks numerous times, and now he wants the company to do something about it. "I order a double-shot of Espresso and only get one-and-a-half ounces,” says King. "This is not an isolated case. It has happened at all the Starbucks I’ve gone to from Grass Valley all the way down to Elk Grove, and it’s always short."

Not cool, Starbucks. Not cool.

This isn't the first time the food and beverage industry has tried to deprive us of tastiness. If you recall, Subway got caught in a foot-long Grindr-esuqe lie, which advertised a full 12-inches but only delivered a meager 11.

So far, report the Chronicle and the Business Times, the company is interested in the former La Boulange West Portal property.

Starbucks announced in June that it would close all La Boulange locations, a San Francisco chain it acquired for $100 million in 2012. Since then, and with La Boulange stores now closed, rumors have swirled that certain La Boulange locations might change their names and recipes and reopen as similar enterprises, with founder Pascal Rigo staging a big second coming. That rumor was recently buoyed by a business filing obtained by Hoodline that registered a "La Boulangerie de San Francisco" at the erstwhile chain's Pine Street flagship.

But, as the Chronicle writes, "La Boulange’s demise could give the group an opportunity to quickly penetrate a Bay Area marketplace that is notoriously tough to enter." Lemonade, of course, agrees. “We feel Lemonade is the perfect brand for San Francisco,” Alan Jackson, the company’s CEO, said in a statement. “We think people will understand our level of food and appreciate our style of cooking and the fact that we are influenced by seasonality and are predominantly vegetables.”

According to the company's chief financial officer, Lemonade is considering 12 locations in the Bay Area. As of yet, according to Lemonade no lease has been signed. Of course, with 15 existing locations as far flung as San Diego, according to San Francisco's formula retail laws Lemonade is a chain. As such, the company would have to file for a conditional use permit.

Starbucks is "in discussion with interested parties to transfer the leases for some retail locations" the chain tells Hoodline, with Eater and the Business Times getting in on the speculation that behind the transfer could be the chains' founder, Pascal Rigo.

According to Eater:

One tipster joyously told us she heard from employees at the Fillmore location that Rigo will reopen six locations (the original on Pine, Fillmore, Cole, Hayes, Polk and Union). Another heard the number to reopen is seven. A Cole Valley employee reiterated that in a Facebook post, writing that though there's no timeline, the Cole Valley location is on that roster. All of them heard that the stores will reopen under a new name and with a new menu.

Starbucks purchased La Boulange for $100 million in 2012, and announced in June that it would shutter all of the chain's 23 locations, 15 of which are in Francisco. Starbucks, it seems, was after La Boulange's recipes. Once it secured them, the retail locations became unnecessary, or so some news outlets such as Adweek suspect.

But, with fresh ideas and probably a new name, it's possible for Rigo to stage a comeback. In fact, it's something he may have been hinting at since telling the Business Times in June to “stay tuned.... [for] what [the bakeries] could become again, for how it could rise again from the ashes.”

Still, when asked point blank what was happening, he told Hoodline that "it's too early to say,"

As of now, this is the list of closing dates, some as soon as tomorrow, for the La Boulange stores. Bid them au revoir, if you'd like, bearing in mind that this French goodbye translates to "see you again."

Au revoir, La Boulange. Starbucks, which purchased the San Francisco coffee and baked goods chain for $100 million in 2012, has announced that it will shutter all of that chain's 23 locations, 15 of them San Francisco. Those, along with the Evolution Fresh retail location on Fillmore and the two "manufacturing facilities" that serve La Boulange, will be gone by the end of September.

Starbucks plans to continue sales of La Boulange branded pastries nationwide, which although not an immediate hit with customers, the company still cites as an important part of their "breakfast platform."

Here's the rest of the corporate gobbledygook from Starbucks.

As Starbucks stays steadfast in its commitment to achieve long-term growth targets enterprise-wide, it is with careful consideration the company shares the difficult decision to close all 23 La Boulange retail (bakery cafés) locations, as well as the two manufacturing facilities that serve those locations, by the end of September 2015. As a standard course of business, Starbucks continually evaluates all components of its business to confirm they are aligned with key priorities and strategies for growth, which includes the continued analysis of the store portfolio. Based on our ongoing evaluations, Starbucks has determined La Boulange stores are not sustainable for the company’s long-term growth. The La Boulange brand will continue to play a significant role in the future of Starbucks food in stores, and the company looks forward to serving delicious La Boulange food at its Starbucks retail locations in San Francisco and across the U.S. and Canada.

Naturally, a large number of employees will be out of work come September. Not to worry, Starbucks says. "All partners (employees) who work in these locations are being treated with the utmost care - receiving personalized transition materials and having in-person conversations with their managers to explain this decision. Where possible, Starbucks will help partners find new positions at Starbucks stores in the area."

Looking back, La Boulange was always just a drop in Starbucks' venti-sized coffee empire, which saw over $16 billion in revenue last year as it operated a staggering 21,536 locations worldwide. Though large by San Francisco standards, La Boulange is quaint in comparison. French-American founder Pascal Rigo opened his first La Boulange location in 1996 on Pine Street. And with a number of prime locations like that one and the Hayes Valley spot pictured above, Starbucks will likely fare with sales of its its newest product, San Francisco real-estate. On a happier note, maybe we'll see some interesting new things pop up, too.

Perhaps now we can refocus our attention to Blue Bottle, a burgeoning local coffee company that staged its own pastry coup by absorbing Tartine in April. Jesus God let's hope that acquisition has a sweeter ending.
