The Cats Of Mirikitani">

What started out as a project about the drawings of homeless SoHo street artist and cat-lover Jimmy Mirikitani turned into a quest to save a man from his present and from his past when filmmaker Linda Hattendorf found Mirikitani coughing on an empty street on the evening of September 11, 2001, with no place to go for shelter. Hattendorf invited him into her house, and over the next four months, struggled to find him permanent housing and social services support in the government system that Sacramento-born Mirikitani rejected after his internment at Tule Lake during World War II.

screened with the short film Pilgrimage, about the reclaiming of the Manzanar internment camp as a symbol of Japanese-American history and Asian-American political activism. It looked as though there were a large number of internment survivors in the audience, and their tears were audible when Jimmy Mirikitani returned to Tule Lake for a memorial event in the film. (Tule Lake is where most of the Japanese-Americans in Northern California were sent.)

The gratitude on the part of the audience to the filmmakers for preserving an often-forgotten part of history, and to Linda Hattendorf for reaching out to a fellow human being was palpable, and then to cap it all off, a pleased-as-punch Jimmy Mirikitani grabbed the microphone at the end of the Q&A and sang what sounded like a traditional Japanese song, to cheers all around.

A very enthusiastic "HER MOTHER AND I DO!" of support to the genius tipster who passed along the Exclusive Details about the impending Kimberly Guilfoyle-Eric Villency (hereinafter, "the Guilfency") Memorial Day nuptials in Barbados, from Fashion Week Daily!

Eric proposed with a 5.2 carat Asscher-cut diamond (huh huh, you said "ass"), which, for those of you in the know, is exactly the same size and shape as Kate Hudson's. Ooh, goody! The big day is Saturday the 27th, at the same place Tiger Woods got married. Kimmerando is wearing a Reem Acra dress. We hope that doesn't get crushed on a carpet in the wedding pictures.

We're sure our invite just got lost in the mail. But it's okay, we'll just crash the Guilfency's May 31 post-wedding party at the Soho Grand. Or maybe we'll just stop by their new place in the Trump International at 1 Central Park West. How exciting, the Guilfency will be so close to that Whole Foods we hear the New Yorkers are going crazy for.

SFist Raves: Thrift Town

SFist has not one, not two, but weddings to go to this summer, and we needed a snazzy suit. Something dark, not too heavy, and cheapcheapcheap. So we went to Thrift Town at 17th and Mission because, well, we do almost all our shopping at Thrift Town. Hey, when you're an underemployed blogger, you've got to look good on a budget.

When we lived in New York City, our favorite shop was the Salvation Army in Soho. Over the years we scored a houndsooth Burberry suit and a navy, pinstriped Brooks Brothers for less than fifty bucks each. Word to the wise: hipsters buy the ugly crap from the seventies, and no self-respecting yuppie would go looking for suits at a thrift store. After moving here, our ex turned us on to this gem, and we've been getting our frequent shopper card stamped ever since.

There were lots of good looking options in 42 and 44, but we're a 46 long. But we found a charcoal grey number which was hand-tailored in New York. It's a little tight through the shoulders, and the trousers could use a slight hem, but it looks great on us and set us back a whopping $30. They also have good dress shirts, sportcoats, the occassional awesome sweater and a whole floor of housewares.

So before you go drop $500 on clothes at Macy's, head by Thrift Town first (and Community Thrift is just a block away on Valencia, but they don't have dressing rooms!). They have awesome sales, and are so cheap, SFist has been known to just buy an outfit so that we can put off laundry for yet another day.
