The shooting happened around 10:45 pm on the 2200 block of 22nd Avenue, between Rivera and Santiago streets. Based on preliminary evidence, investigators believe it may have been accidental.

The San Francisco Police Department announced in a press release Thursday that Nation Wood, 25, of San Francisco, was arrested Wednesday morning and booked into the San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, according to KPIX. Wood was detained Tuesday at the scene as soon as officers first responded to the shooting.

According to Emge and Wood’s LinkedIn pages, they attended San Francisco State University at the same time. Emge’s page says she attended the school for four years, graduating in May 2025, and worked as an interior design and architecture consultant. Wood’s LinkedIn profile says he works as a security advisor and attended SFSU through July 2025.

“I’m deeply saddened by this tragic incident in our community,” District 4 Supervisor Alan Wong, who represents the Sunset District, said in a statement. “My thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. It’s part of the California State University (CSU) system, which consists of 23 schools, also including schools like Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, and Sacramento State.

We mention these four schools in particular because not only are they the largest schools in the CSU system, but their faculty are all currently planning a one-day strike in early December, according to the Chronicle. Each school will strike on a different day, but each will be in the first week of December, on dates between December 4-7. SF State teachers are scheduled to strike December 5.

“At SF State we face devastating job cuts to hundreds of lecturer faculty, the loss of hundreds of classes — harming students’ path to graduation — and increased workloads for remaining faculty,” SF State chapter president of their union the California Faculty Association told the Chronicle. “Our faculty are furious, and they’re channeling their anger into organizing for the coming strike. Management has lost sight of our educational mission to serve students. This strike sends a message to get back on track: Faculty working conditions are student learning conditions.”

According to SF State’s student newspaper the Golden Gate Xpress, 95% of those union members voted to strike in an October 30 vote.

The union is primarily pushing for a 12% pay raise, but also has grievances around lack of paid parental leave, scarce mental health resources for students, plus issues like the lack of gender-neutral restrooms and accessible lactation spaces for faculty.

The CSU system says campuses would remain open during all of these scheduled strikes. The system’s chancellor’s office said in a statement to the Chronicle that it “remains committed to the negotiation process and is hopeful of reaching a tentative agreement with the California Faculty Association, as we have done with five of our other employee unions in recent weeks.”

Yeah, but about those other employee unions. The education publication Edsource reports that the school system’s trade workers with Teamsters Local 2010 are also planning a one-day strike next week, on Tuesday, November 14, and that one will be systemwide.

Related: SF Teacher Strike Averted, After All-Night Bargaining Session Produces Significant Pay Raise [SFist]

Image: Gail P. via Yelp

[Update] White Nationalist Rally Planned In SF Elicits Calls For Counter Protest

The anti-immigrant rally took place this afternoon on the Embarcadero.

SF News

nazis

racism

sfsu

Jack Morse

A group of anti-immigrant, white nationalists plan to hold a rally in San Francisco today protesting the city's status as a sanctuary city, and calls have gone out for counter-protesters to meet them on the street. Indy Bay calls attention to the planned action by Identity Evropa, and notes that while the exact location of the rally had intentionally been kept secret, it is scheduled to go down at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.

We now know the location, however, as the organization intending to livestream the rally just announced via Twitter that their target is <strike>the Malcolm X Plaza at San Francisco State University</strike>. [See the update below.]

Identity Evropa is led by Nathan Damigo, a resident of Oakdale, and describes itself on its website (which we will not link to out of principle) as "a generation of awakened Europeans who have discovered that we are part of the great peoples, history, and civilization that flowed from the European continent."

As noted by Broke Ass Stuart, various groups are already discussing a possible counter-protest — suggesting things could get hectic in SF today. It's Going Down has detailed Identity Evropa's white nationalist efforts, and suggests in a post yesterday that people should prepare to respond to today's rally in real time.

"We also know that at 3pm tomorrow, people are probably going to know where IE is holding their rally by watching the livestream," It's Going Down writes. "At 3pm, if you and your friends hear where IE is at, what can you pull off?"

This is not the first we've heard of Identity Evropa. In September, a tipster wrote into SFist that he had spotted fliers from the group around the Marina district. Members also organized an event in May at UC Berkeley where they handed out anti-immigrant literature. According to It's Going Down, about 20 people showed up at that event.

While it is entirely possible that Identity Evropa will indeed rally at San Francisco State University today, it of course is also possible that this is all PR bluster and that no one will show up. Let's hope for the latter.

Update: The group that live-streamed the rally, Red Ice, was either uninformed or intentionally misled possible counter-protesters as to its location. The rally was held at the Embarcadero.

Only SF natives, mid-1980s SF State grads, and longtime residents will remember the tale of Baby Jane Doe, abandoned in a cardboard box the day of her birth in a laundry room at SF State University, who ultimately became an adopted infant named Jillian Sobol. The Chronicle today brings the heart-warming tale of Sobol, now 31, who after some educational hurdles including learning disabilities, has graduated from the very university where she was born, and found.

It was November 5, 1984 when SF State student Patrick Coughlan noticed something stirring in box of towels on the floor of a room of laundry dryers in Verducci Hall. Inside he found a small infant making no sound, her body taking on a blue tinge, her umbilical cord crudely cut. He went to the only other student doing laundry at the time, 21-year-old nursing student Esther Wannenmacher in the washing machine room next door, and reportedly said, "Did you know there’s a baby in a box in here?" The two called 911, and Wannamacher, now Kaiser San Francisco nurse Esther Raiger, 53, quickly set about doing what she had just been tested on in a newborn care class, making sure the baby's airway was clear, and cuddling her to warm her recognizing the potential for hypothermia.

The infant was whisked to SF General and was quickly given a clean bill of health, but then her story became a Bay Area obsession as potential adopted parents lined up, and as the university tracked down the child's birth parents. They turned out to be two sophomores, and the mother admitted she'd hidden her pregnancy and never informed the father, whom she met at a party. Neither parent ended up graduating.

We learn via the Chron that Sobol, who was adopted by a San Francisco doctor and his gallery-owner wife, Sam and Helene Sobol, wasn't told of the Baby Jane Doe story until she was 16, at which point she and a friend tracked down Raiger, who was by then married with her own children — one named Jillian — and living in Novato.

Coughlan, we're told, died in 2014, but Raiger attended Sobol's graduation last week and the two have become friends. And Sobol has been in touch with both her birth parents, and has met her biological father, who is a massage therapist living in Hawaii.

Video: Dreadlocked Guy Explains What Led Up To 'Cultural Appropriation' Accusation

It appears the encounter wasn't staged, and the man claims he was followed down two flights of stairs before the video starts.

SF News

race

sfsu

video

Jack Morse

After a video depicting an African American student at San Francisco State University accusing a white student of cultural appropriation for sporting dreadlocks went viral, we were left with a series of questions. Namely, was this absurd encounter staged? And, are white-guy dreadlocks still a thing? Also: Don't these kids know that this argument about cultural appropriation got tired about 20 years ago? A reporter with Golden Gate Xpress, SFSU's campus paper, caught up with the dreadlocks guy and her interview further proves our thesis from yesterday — basically, everyone involved in the situation comes out looking like an idiot.

The Xpress reports that the dreadlocks guy is environmental science major Cory Goldstein, and the woman is photography major Bonita Tindle. The filmed bit of the encounter took place around 4 p.m. on Monday, but it began earlier.

"I looked at her, and she said 'Sorry, we don't want people with your hair here,'" Goldstein explained to the paper. This is after Tindle allegedly offered him a flier for an event, but then retracted the offer. "I was like, 'Wow, that's really rude,' and I walked away from the situation. She then apparently followed me down two flights of stairs to approach me about this whole situation."

Goldstein further says he "tried to leave multiple times," but "she kept grabbing me, pushing me back."

Now, regardless of what you think about Goldstein's hair, we can all agree that no one deserves to be accosted for his or her hairstyle. It is this vital bit that Tindle seems to have missed — a fact which is made abundantly clear in the beginning of the original video when she can be heard asking another individual "you got some scissors?" Implying, of course, that she's going to cut off Goldstein's dreadlocks right then and there.

“Someone within an activist group thought that she could attack me based on my locks and that’s not okay — it’s not even a part of, like, the colored community’s culture,” Goldstein whitesplained to the Xpress. “I felt that I didn’t need to explain myself. My hair, my rules, my body.”

As to the charge of cultural appropriation? Goldstein isn't buying it, furthering that "someone having locks which is found universally across the world, not just within African culture, but everywhere actually, that is not cultural appropriation in my view." He might want to reconsider using the term "colored community," however, in future.

Goldstein says he will not press charges, however KRON 4 reports that the person who filmed the encounter (which ends with the camera being smacked) has asked that charges be filed.

“I really am hoping that the campus is able to fully resolve this issue without any more issues basically," noted Goldstein. "I don’t feel that me getting attacked should cause more of an attack.”

A video that appears to show a San Francisco State University student taking her fellow student to task for having dreadlocks has gone viral, prompting an investigation by campus police. KRON 4 reports that despite claims made in the YouTube link, none of the individuals involved are employed by the school.

The short video, shot March 28, shows an African American woman confronting a young white man over his dreadlocks, and features the following gem of an exchange:

Dreadlocked Guy: "You're saying that I can't have a hairstyle because of your culture? Why?"
Lady: "Yeah, because it's my culture. Do you know what dreadlocks mean?"

As dreadlock man says something about them coming from Egypt and attempts to walk away, the woman appears to grab his arm. "Yo girl, stop touching me right now," he replies. The video ends with the woman smacking the camera.

While we can not confirm that this whole drama was not staged for viral effect (a couple of more cynical SFist staffers think so), a statement from school officials which went out today reads as follows:

We are aware of the video made of an incident which occurred on campus yesterday afternoon. University police were called to the scene of the incident when it occurred. The two individuals involved in the incident are not San Francisco State University employees. Further, no criminal charges have been pressed at this time to the University’s knowledge.

San Francisco State University promotes the rights of the campus community to engage in free speech, but does not condone behavior that impedes the safety or well-being of others. We are taking the matter seriously and will promptly and thoroughly investigate this incident through applicable University channels, including our campus student conduct procedures.

While we likely won't know exactly what went down until the investigation is complete, one thing is for sure: At 19, everyone is an idiot.

The site of the assault, Mary Ward Hall, is a dorm for first-year students that houses about 420 residents of both genders.

Jonathan Morales, SF State’s director of news and news media told the Golden Gate Xpress, which is SFSU student newspaper, that "the University could not comment on the incident in order to protect the victim and because the investigation is currently ongoing."

“Our focus is on the victim right now and making efforts so that something like this doesn’t happen again,” he said.

Speaking with the Ex, Morales described the investigation as "high priority," but refused to comment further, saying that “We need to preserve the privacy of the victim."

Morales also refused to provide the gender of the victim, or to confirm if the victim was a student, according to the Chron.

To preserve the “integrity of the investigation,” Morales refused to provide Bay City News with any suspect information or to say if any arrests had been made.

Though SF State often sends out alerts to students and faculty when on-campus crime occurs (for example, here and here), Morales confirms that no such notification was sent our regarding Saturday morning's assault.

Just last month, a female student was sexually assaulted by a man she did not know while in the lobby of Burk Hall, which houses SFSU's school of education. According to the Golden Gate Xpress, that was the second such assault in that area this year.

Bay City News reports that in 2013, SF State's dorms were the site of four reported rapes, one report of sexual battery and seven domestic violence reports.

In 2014, there were five reported rapes in the dorms, three reports of sexual battery and four reports of on-campus dating violence.

A wave of bike thefts followed by little or no university action has left some San Francisco State University students feeling betrayed. The most recent incident, a brazen burglary of the enclosed "Bike Barn" storage area, is just another example in a string of incidents that students say has become the norm on the campus of 29,000.

The October 25th burglary of the Bike Barn hit senior Nolen Brown particularly hard. In conversation with Golden Gate Xpress, Brown spoke of discovering that his $3,000 bicycle had been stolen.

“I was enraged,” said Brown. “I was really upset. I’ve been working hard to get a mountain bike team together on campus, so it was a huge setback.”

Residents of San Francisco are no stranger to bike theft, but at least we have the option to store our bikes inside of our own homes. Not so for on-campus residents, as the Xpress notes that residential life rules actually prevent students from storing bicycles in their rooms.

"Bicycles, skates, and skateboards must be kept in designated areas and their use is not permitted on patios or other posted areas. Bicycles, skates, and skateboards may be confiscated if left or ridden in unauthorized areas," the rules read in part.

Another student, Jacob Phillips spoke of the University Police closing the case of the $700 worth of parts stripped from his bike a mere ten hours after he reported it.

“San Francisco, being packed with cyclists, has a University that frankly does not care about cyclists,” said Phillips. “Whether it be students living here or people who commute to school, there is no safe place to keep a bike here on campus.”

This was not the first time the supposedly secure Bike Barn has been broken into, although the campus police seemed unaware of the specifics.

“Theft is not common for the Bike Barn,” University Police Department Chief Reggie Parson told the Xpress in an email.

A quick check by the Xpress of the SF State Arrest, Crime and Fire Log showed that contrary to what Parson claimed, over the course of the past 60 days the Bike Barn has played host to two petty thefts and three burglaries.

While some students can't understand why the University doesn't better work to provide a secure environment for bicycle commuters to store their rides, at least one thinks he knows the answer.

“The solution to bike security requires money, which is why nothing has been done about it,” Phillips said.

Bike theft is not a new problem for SF State either. As recently as April of 2014 the University Police sent out a notice to students warning of a "recent trend of bicycle thefts occurring around campus" and providing students with a list of suggested practices to keep their bicycles secure.

The top suggestion on the list?

"If possible, park your bike in the Bicycle Barn."

A male-on-male sexual assaulter has put the San Francisco State University campus on high alert this week after an incident on the running track at Cox Stadium. University police issued the alert after a male jogger reported having his ass grabbed by an unknown Asian male on Tuesday evening while he was trying to go for a jog in peace.

The incident happened around 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, and as Golden Gate Xpress tells us, "The victim allegedly pushed the subject in response, who pushed him back and caused him to fall to the ground. The victim then got up and ran away from the subject."

It's unclear if any words were exchanged.

The suspect is an Asian male in his 20s, approximately 5-foot-10-inches tall, clean shaven with "hairy eyebrows."

Hot male joggers at SF State are encouraged not to wear anything too enticing whilst jogging at the stadium until this wily butt grabber is apprehended.
"At about 5:45 p.m., police and emergency crews responded to the intersection of Holloway Avenue and Junipero Serra Boulevard on a report of a collision," reports CBS SF/BCN. "Upon arrival at the intersection, officers found that a vehicle had hit a pedestrian."

She was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

This comes on the heels of an uptick in reports on driver-on-pedestrian injuries in San Francisco. On Friday, as reported by SF Weekly, a 64-year-old woman was struck by a driver at 26th Avenue and Clement Street.

Police are asking for help locating a suspect who sexually assaulted a woman inside a San Francisco State dorm. The incident occurred at around 8 p.m. on Friday, September 30. The woman, who was not an SFSU student, went on campus to attend a party at the Towers. Inside the lobby, she met a man who said he could take her to the party. Once inside the elevator, however, he grabbed her, wouldn't allow her leave, and took her to another floor and inside a room where he attacked her.

According to Golden Gate XPress, "When the assault ended, the victim was able to flee and relocate her friends."

The suspect has been described as being around 5’8, 180 lbs, 18-22 y/o, "of mixed race and with short hair." Anyone with any information should call Inspector Abe Leal at 415-338-7200 or 415-338-2222.

Controversial yet humorous columnist Dan Savage will be in town this Friday to speak about his latest offering, It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living. (Side note: Savage, as some may not know, is also the Editor Director of The Stranger, Seattle's esteemed alt-weekly.) SF Weekly's Keith Bowers has the details:

Love him or hate him, advice columnist Dan Savage has spent his career fighting hatred and violence against queers as well as anyone else who runs afoul of the far right wing's sexual code of conduct (which is pretty much everyone). For nearly a decade, he opened his column with the greeting, "Hey, Faggot!" - to reclaim and disarm a hateful word (see also: Queer Nation, Dyke March, Perverts Put Out). His latest effort against homophobia is a book he and his husband Terry Miller edited called It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living. It's based on the video series It Gets Better, in which queer people (some famous, some not) tell inspirational stories about surviving bullying and building well-adjusted and successful lives. Savage and Miller will be at San Francisco State on Friday to talk about it.
