It appears the crowds on Polk Street Saturday night were excited/drunk/angry (who can tell with these things) in anticipation of the Super Bowl, despite the fact that no Bay Area team was involved. Multiple people in the area tweeted about crowds in the streets, with video showing police on the scene and one person referring to it as a "riot," and Hoodline subsequently picked up the story.

A witness to the events, albeit from his apartment window, wrote in to Hoodline to recount what he saw.

"I did not go out and that was just what I could see from my building," writes the man identified as Chris. "I heard this morning that it was a 3-wheeled motorcycle vehicle that was burning and that it was parked in front of Quetzal before being set on fire. The circumstances fit that scenario, but this information is unverified.

"I have no other details and any other comments on what led to last nights disturbance, etc. would be speculation," Chris continues. "I will say based on observation though, the Police moved in about 20 minutes after it started. From the siren sounds and the way they responded in force, it appeared they spent some time staging and preparing to confront the crowd."

Update: Hoodline got a little more information, via a tipster, as to what could have sparked Saturday night's "riot."

It apparently all began with "a group of 20 or so guys yelling anti-police statements and seeming to incite the curious onlookers who were coming out of the bars," the tipster told the publication. "It seemed like the energy had a snowball effect, and more and more people joined them in the street. [...]

"From my perspective, it seemed more spontaneous than anything, although the cops arriving so quickly and having all their gear makes me think otherwise," continued the tipster. "I did hear that Twitter was being monitored, because of the Super Bowl. Maybe that's how they knew, if it was planned. But that's pure speculation!"

Thousands of partiers and college students took to the streets in Berkeley near the Cal campus on Saturday night and early Sunday morning as Halloween revelry devolved into a massive riot.

Up to 5,000 people were in the streets near Channing Way and Piedmont Avenue, with some throwing rocks and bottles. At least one person was sent to the hospital as the result of three reported assaults. At this point it is unclear what sparked the chaos, though Berkeleyside reports that large parties were getting shut down by the Berkeley Fire Department after 10 p.m. Saturday night. Andrew Rateaver told The Daily Californian. "Overall, that was a small portion of the people, and certainly not the entire group."

Captain Andrew Greenwood told Berkeleyside that at least three suspects had been arrested in connection with the three assaults, and that authorities believe that all three were responsible for the attacks. According to ABC 7, one person is in the hospital with a head injury. Records from the Alameda County Sheriff's Department show that as of 5 a.m., Sunday morning, three people had been booked: one for misdemeanor battery, one for a DUI, and another for public intoxication.

We here at SFist have no interest in writing yet another Stupidest SF Giants Celebration 'Incidents' post if the Giants win the World Series, so we were pleased to see that the San Francisco Police Department will be continuing the all-hands-on-deck plan they had for last week's pennant game.

But canceling vacation days isn't the only thing SFPD will be doing next week, according to KTVU. They'll also be working to call off one event, removing typical targets of vandalism, and busting boozers.

Here's a handy list of what they have planned. What else would you like to see the cops do to make sure we don't have a repeat of 2010 or 2012's embarrassing post-World Series madness?

No trash cans for you: SFPD will be picking up trash cans before any final games, so people like those above can't use them to start bonfires. As has been done during past victory celebrations. Guess you'll be packing your trash out!

Civic Center viewing party might not happen: "I haven't heard that we're going to repeat [the viewing party we had in 2012] this time," Deputy Police Chief Lyn Tamioka told KTVU. In 2012 the party "became a starting point for thousands of people to start roaming." So, no party, fewer roaming packs of fans, smashing the hell out of Muni.

Speaking of Muni: Buses will be rerouted so they aren't going through packs of revelers/rioters, and the electrified buses will be taken offline "so they're not easy targets." Also, when I fantasize about smashing a bus it's usually one of those creaky electric ones, and I'm not even a drunk dude.

Cops on two wheels: Even more SFPD officers, all of whom will be working game nights, will be on motorcycles and dirt bikes, so they can easily maneuver through crowds and get to where the shenanigans are.

Boozy busts: Cops will be out early to bust people who seem drunk before they can get into any trouble.

Donnie Brascoing it: SFPD officers will be going undercover in and outside the game, infiltrating crowds and stepping in to cut off "confrontational behavior" before it turns into a brawl.

Learn from Gregory "Muni basher" Graniss' fate, you guys! Stay out of trouble. The last thing we want to have to do is write about your dumb, humiliating arrest.

All World Series games are scheduled for 5:07 p.m. PT. Game 1 is on Tuesday, game 2 is on Wednesday, both at Kauffman Stadium. Games 3, 4, and (if necessary) 5 will be at AT&T Park on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If needed, games 6 and 7 will be Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th at Kauffman Stadium.

Since You Asked: What Happened To The Giants Riot Muni Basher?

You ask, we answer.

SF News

District Attorney

muni

riot

sf giants

Eve Batey

"I forgot about that dummy!" SFist commenter PorkedBun exclaimed after being reminded of that photo of Gregory Tyler Graniss, one of the men accused of vandalizing a Muni bus after the SF Giants World Series win in 2012.

"Whatever happened to that guy?" commenter RinSF asked. What a good question! Let's start at the beginning:

The celebrations following the SF Giants' triumph in the 2012 World Series lasted from late the night of October 28 to early the following morning. All told, prosecutors ended up charging a total of 14 people for incidents across the city, including assaults on police officers, robbery, vandalism and discharging a firearm from a window (about 20 others were arrested and cited for various misdemeanors or for public intoxication).

But one man stood above them all: after an SF Chronicle photographer took a picture of a man smashing the windshield of an 8X-Bayshore Express bus with a metal police barricade, the picture was circulated by police and concerned citizens. Feeling the heat, Graniss turned himself in a few days later, and was charged with felony vandalism and willful tampering with a passenger transit vehicle.

“The Giants’ victory was amazing and it really brought out the best in San Francisco and unfortunately the worst in Gregory,” his attorney Douglas Rappaport said at Graniss' first court appearance.

“He is very ashamed of his actions and very, very sorry.” But not so sorry that he was willing to plead guilty.

Oh, but the wheels of justice grind ever so slowly. As of January, 2014, the Chron reports that Graniss and Nicholas Hudson, who also allegedly attacked the bus, were still awaiting trial.

After RinSF asked about Graniss' fate, I emailed San Francisco District Attorney's office spokesperson Alex Bastian, who responded:

"Both Graniss and Nicholas Hudson were found guilty of the charge of rioting," (not, as you might recall, the original charges of felony vandalism and willful tampering with a passenger transit vehicle). "They were both placed on probation, and have certain terms and conditions associated with that."

"We also had a restitution hearing, and the judge mandated that both defendants pay restitution," which is something DA Gascon had vowed to pursue at the time of Graniss' arrest.

Bastian didn't say how long Hudson and Graniss are on probation, or how much restitution they must pay: one hopes a lot, as the bus, which cost $700,000 and had recently had $300,000 of repairs, was totaled in the incident. That bus' replacement was all paid for by taxpayer dollars, as, at least at the time, Muni's insurance policy didn't cover damage caused by arson.

So, I emailed Bastian back with those probation and restitution questions, and I'll update if and when he responds. But regardless of the punishment, San Franciscans, heed the tale of Gregory Tyler Graniss, who will always have the above photo come up first when his name is googled (unless he does something even worse that is also photographed). Learn from his terrible fate!

If the SF Giants win tonight, there will be much cause for rejoicing. After all, this will be their third National League pennant, and their next stop will be the World Series. Hooray! But San Francisco has a not-so-great track record when it comes to sports success celebrations — and the San Francisco Police Department says they're ready for any unpleasantness caused by a few bad apples.

Though the majority of the city's horrible sports-related rioting came after the Giants' 2010 and 2012 World Series wins, SFPD Chief Greg Suhr isn't taking any chances this evening. According to KCBS, all SFPD officers have canceled their days off and are ready to make sure any impromptu street celebrations of a pennant win stay safe and legal.

Police have certainly been on alert in the area around AT&T Park throughout the playoffs, conducting "crime suppression" patrols, breaking up a fight at 9:53 last night, and arresting three other drunk people shortly thereafter, SFPD spokesperson Sergeant Monica MacDonald says.

But Suhr isn't taking any chances with San Franciscans who might get a little too happy tonight (if we win! No jinxies!), saying “Certainly nobody wants to wake up tomorrow morning, just because they celebrated the Giants game, in jail with a case pending...Let’s act like we’ve been there before, because we have been.”

SFPD posted footage of these dimwitted fellas who lit a Muni bus ablaze on Monday shortly after the Giants won the World Series. Police are now asking for you help in identifying them. Police Chief Greg Suhr made the cell phone film public during a press conference this week.

"With the assistance of the media and the public, we were able to apprehend the suspect responsible for damaging the bus windshield. We are now asking for public assistance in identifying these two arsonists and bringing them to justice," said Suhr. "The Police Department is working closely with the Municipal Transportation Agency to solve this case. When we do, we will coordinate with the District Attorney and City Attorney's Offices to hold these persons accountable for their actions and to see that restitution is paid."

After a dining hall riot broke out at San Quentin on Sunday, four prisoners were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The minor melee involved at least 200 convicts. No idea what, exactly, prompted the fisticuffs. However, the Examiner reports that "[t]he men ended up with stab and slash wounds after the riot erupted around 6:50 p.m." and no staff members were injured.

However, according to authorities, "unruly marchers were tearing up the city" as darkness fell. CNN reports: "They were throwing rocks, bottles and trash, and ripping up fences."

The situation turned dangerous, according to The Chronicle, "when a protester ripped the holster and gun from a police officer's belt." Said protester was then "swarmed by other officers and arrested."

The brief moment of civil unrest, comparatively quaint when compared to the riot in July sparked by Mehserle's involuntary manslaughter conviction. "The City Hall rally and another at the corner of 14th and Broadway were peaceful. Rather than the incendiary anger of past demonstrations over the Grant shooting, the rallies mostly had an air of sadness."

Oakland riots, will they or won't they happen? Johannes Mehserle, the BART cop accused of killing Oscar Grant at the Frutivale station, could face 2nd degree murder (15 years - life), voluntary manslaughter (3 - 11 years), involuntary manslaughter (2 - 4 years), or acquittal. If the latter verdict is read in court, the city of Oakland could explode to bits. Or not.

Here's a brief rundown on the latest Mehserle verdict news.

SF Appeal mentions that BART is prepping for the worst care scenario:

BART is also preparing for the worst. Service disruptions are likely if public reaction reaches levels similar to the previous riot. In a statement released by BART Board President James Fang (you can read the whole thing here), he says BART is calling "for calm and peaceful response to the upcoming verdict in the Johannes Mehserle trial" noting that "neither, BART, the City of Oakland, its residents or its businesses have control over the outcome of the People versus Mehserle trial."

Zombie from Pajamas Media (via Eye On Blogs) says there will be a riot if a guilty verdict isn't read:

Nearly everyone in the Bay Area agrees that a major Oakland riot is brewing if the verdict in the trial of policeman Johannes Mehserle, accused of murdering BART passenger Oscar Grant on New Year’s Day, 2009, comes back anything other than “GUILTY!” The problem for Oakland’s sense of security is that Mehserle is almost certainly not guilty of murder, and the jury is likely to give him a comparatively light sentence or even let him go completely.

Some Oakland stores have plastered their storefronts with Oscar Grant posters in an effort to steer possible rioters elsewhere, according to KRON 4.

California Beat reports that many businesses near the Fruitvale BART station boarded up their windows with plywood today. What's more, speaking on behalf of the entire family, Oscar Grant’s uncle, Cephus Johnson, said, "We know people are tired of police brutality. We know they’re tired of people consistently dying and the police continuing to walk. But we as a family stand for nonviolence."

Video: Police Attack I-880 Takeover Protesters

The spirited folks over at Indybay.org bring our attention to this video, one that chronicles last week's I-880 protest that resu...

SF News

berkeley

I-880

Oakland

police

police brutality

protest

riot

Brock Keeling

The spirited folks over at Indybay.org bring our attention to this video, one that chronicles last week's I-880 protest that resulted in the temporary closure of I-880 by 'Day of Action' protesters. Carrying a bizarre (and unfocused) banner reading "We Have Decided Not To Die" and chanting about class war, the young and attractive kids walked out onto I-880, stopped traffic, and, well, sat down.

And then? The riot police took over, "attacking" the mob of demonstrators blocking traffic. "The Oakland riot police swept in and without a call for dispersal started swinging batons and beating people before arresting them," reports Indybay.org. (At 1:45 is where the fuzz starts the beat down.) 's more, a 19-year-old student, Francois Ziimany, suffered a fractured skull -- not due to police brutality, but after jumping to a tree from the elevated freeway in order to evade arresting officers. Anyway, watch for yourself to see what happened.

Video: Girl Arrested During UC Berkeley Riot

Presumably moments before last night's rally / dance party flash mob at UC Berkeley, sparked by cranky tuition-hike pr...

SF News

police

protest

riot

uc berkeley

Brock Keeling

Presumably moments before last night's rally / dance party flash mob at UC Berkeley, sparked by cranky tuition-hike protesters, gained momentum, this student protester was swallowed up by riot police. According to the this video's maker, Narukami, the girl was "taken and arrested by police while she was telling everyone how a police officer punched her in the nose."

Akin to Judy Garland's death or Adam Lambert losing last night's American Idol finale -- damn you to hell, Bill O'Reilly! -- 30 years ago today the White Night riots erupted after supervisor Dan White was given a lenient verdict for murdering supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone. Windows were smashed, property destroyed, and police cruisers set ablaze. Then, after watching the gays get hysterical, SFPD raided a Castro gay bar (Elephant Walk, now known as Harvey's) in retaliation, thus escalating tension.

Anyway, the city was, more or less, on fire for a few days after the verdict was read. Fiery nights that would have made Gay Shame proud.

Even though BART officer Johannes Mehserle was arrested and charged with the murder of Oscar Grant, violence hit the streets of Oakland last night as yesterday's protest ended. About 18 people were arrested last night after a "splinter group" went on a window smashing rampage. If you recall, Mehserle, who is white, fired a fatal shot into the back of unarmed Oscar Grant, who is black, at the Frutivale BART station on New Year's Day. Inexplicably, angry "activists" then used Grant as a signifier of anything from a fascist police state to violence in the Gaza Strip.

In addition to the window breaking spree, several cars were damaged, a few BART stations closed for the night. Police remained apart from the crowd gathered at Broadway and 12th Street, but "stepped in with tear gas" when the crowd became unruly.

"Out of 400 that were here, about 50 were determined to commit crimes," said Police Deputy Chief Dave Kozicki. Over all, however, the Oakland protest remained peaceful.

A few notable quotes from the rally? Addressing the Mehserle case, Councilwoman Desley Brooks told the crowd, "I have no confidence in the district attorney and I will watch him every step of the way." And Bishop Keith Clark of the Word Assembly Church in Oakland kicked cried out, "We come seeking justice" and "arrest isn't justice but conviction is."

Non-Terror Wreaks Non-Havoc at Civic Center BART Protest

Remember how there was supposed to be a protest cum riot at Civic Center tonight?
Will update if anything bad happens to that awesome place across from the main library that serves those tasty meat pies. The name escapes us. Anyway, yeah, we'll update if anything serious happens.

Chant update: We've got two gems: "Occupation is a crime / Greece, Oakland, Palestine" and "No justice no peace / no racist police"

Protest update: More protesters turned out as night fell. Garbage cans overturned, plastic garbage can was dumped on Kearney, aluminum chairs tossed in Union Square. Protesters also shouted, "We are Oscar Grant!"

Police in riot gear closed down a main street in Oakland after protesters tried to stop cars, light a fire, and threw trash cans into the street last night. Office buildings around 14th street and Broadway were evacuated in anticipation of more rioting as well, but the action turned out to be not nearly as frantic as Wednesday night's protest turned riot. Let's hope all of the anger doesn't make its way to delicate San Francisco.
