We get further confirmation today that traffic on Bay Area freeways has jumped a staggering 70 percent since 2010. A report released by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission brings us the unwelcome truth, along with the revelation that traffic now is as bad as it's ever been since 1981 — the year the MTC began keeping track.

This report only reiterates the findings of a national traffic study released in March covering 2015 that put San Francisco third in the country for congestion, behind only LA and DC. And it confirms why morning rush hour heading to the Bay Bridge has only gotten earlier and earlier in the last few years.

The Chronicle picked up the report, and explained that at the heart of the matter is what's called “congested delay” — when drivers are moving at speeds at or below 35 miles per hour.

You see, that happens quite a bit around these parts.

“The congestion data really underscore both the robust job growth we’ve seen in the South Bay and San Francisco, and the persistent imbalance between where those jobs are located and where comparatively affordable housing can be found,” Santa Clara County Supervisor and MTC Chair Dave Cortese said in a press release. “Routes leading into or out of Silicon Valley and San Francisco dominate the Top 10 [worst commutes], and they account for almost half of all congestion in the region.”

According to MTC data, which covers 2015, when it comes to traffic the single worst stretch of freeway is the afternoon drive on the 101/I-80 from San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island (check the map below for the full list of the top ten worst Bay Area commutes).

“We all feel the impacts of traffic congestion in our daily commutes,” San Jose Mayor and MTC Commissioner Sam Liccardo explained in a press release. “But today’s data starkly demonstrates how quickly we need to invest in real solutions that can provide congestion relief — expanding mass transit, improving our roads and highways, and more.”

As fans of The Wire* inevitably assure you, crime data, especially those from systems like Compstat, are infinitely, um, malleable. And yet, they are often the only method we have, especially given the San Francisco Police Department's notoriously inaccurate methods of data compilation. So how seriously should any of us take SFPD's claims this week that violent and property crimes are decreasing on the city? That's up to you, I guess.

As reported by the Ex, San Francisco's June Compstat numbers have been released. And the news, they say, is good, with assaults, robberies, rapes, burglaries, auto break-ins and larcenies "all down year to date and month to month." You can see June's full Compstat report from SFPD here (links to previous months' reports are here).
According to a recent telephone survey, the more frequently people ride the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's buses, trolleys, and trains, the lower they rated the transit system's service.

That's just one of the fun facts in this year's annual ridership survey, which is on the agenda at today's SFMTA Board meeting, the Ex notes.

This isn't the quarterly customer service satisfaction survey some of you might get in your inboxes (if you don't and wish you did, here's where you can sign up to receive it!): Per the Ex, local opinion research firm Corey, Canapary & Galanis questioned 568 adult English, Spanish, and Cantonese-speaking San Franciscans who ride Muni, on the telephone, between June 16 and August 3.

The Ex reports that 68 percent of the survey respondents who ride Muni once a week (or less) rate its service as excellent. That number dropped to 63 percent when people who ride Muni five days a week or more were questioned. So Muni is basically that friend who seems like a blast when you run into them at some party every couple of months, but if you see them more than that, you're all "oh, yeeeeeaaah, that's why we never hang out."

Fourteen percent of survey respondents cited "station and vehicle cleanliness, as well as overcrowding" as the area Muni needs to improve the most. Respondents also had critical things to say about their fellow passengers, citing as "major issues" the problems of "Boarding before giving people a chance to exit, not giving up a seat for seniors or those with disabilities, littering, talking too loudly or playing loud music, blocking the aisle, pushing or bumping passengers, rudeness to the driver or other passengers, and least of all, taking up more than one seat," the Ex reports.

If you want to get the full scoop on what those 568 people who answer the telephone when an unfamiliar number calls have to say, you can hit the SFMTA Board meeting today for the full "discussion and possible action regarding the Muni Customer Satisfaction Survey," which will include a slide presentation! The party starts at 1 p.m. in City Hall room 400.

Reporting that the Sierra Crest is "dumping over ten feet of feather-light snow," why not take a day or three off of work to head up to higher altitudes and frolic in the cold?

Places like "Squaw Valley," "Kirkwood," and "Heavenly" - terms typically overheard from the mouths of questionable patrons at questionable Marina bars - now come alive for skiers, snowboarders, and hot cocoa-by-the-fireplace enthusiasts. Vlahides recommends Sierra-at-Tahoe for snowboarders and Kirkwood for "serious skiers." For a complete rundown of the winter wonderland athletic activity happening just to the northeast of us, go here.

But the best alternative for those of us not so well-versed in the language of skiing and sweating? He suggests:

To make an adventure out of getting to the slopes, consider the bus-and-boat ski shuttle to Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. A bus take you directly to the mountain in the morning; in the afternoon, you ride back across the lake aboard the Tahoe Queen, while sipping cocktails at a giant floating après-ski party with a live band. Note that this adds about three hours to your ski day, but how often do you get to go boating after a day on the snow? [trips start 1/16]

In a wordy missive to Inspector General Skinner, she fired off over a dozen issues she wants taken care of right-quick.

A couple of points she needs to know about why over 60,000 gallons of fuel spilled into the San Francisco Bay: 1) If the Coast Guard had adequate authority to guide such large ships though the Bay, and 2) if the "hours-long delay in notifying the public about the magnitude of the spill adversely impacted the response."

She wants Skinner's homework on her desk by no later than February 1st as well as a "follow up with a written report 60 days later."
