Reporting that the Sierra Crest is "dumping over ten feet of feather-light snow," why not take a day or three off of work to head up to higher altitudes and frolic in the cold?

Places like "Squaw Valley," "Kirkwood," and "Heavenly" - terms typically overheard from the mouths of questionable patrons at questionable Marina bars - now come alive for skiers, snowboarders, and hot cocoa-by-the-fireplace enthusiasts. Vlahides recommends Sierra-at-Tahoe for snowboarders and Kirkwood for "serious skiers." For a complete rundown of the winter wonderland athletic activity happening just to the northeast of us, go here.

But the best alternative for those of us not so well-versed in the language of skiing and sweating? He suggests:

To make an adventure out of getting to the slopes, consider the bus-and-boat ski shuttle to Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. A bus take you directly to the mountain in the morning; in the afternoon, you ride back across the lake aboard the Tahoe Queen, while sipping cocktails at a giant floating après-ski party with a live band. Note that this adds about three hours to your ski day, but how often do you get to go boating after a day on the snow? [trips start 1/16]

Oh, and for all of you straight-edge goody two shoes afraid of taking some time off, here's how you call in sick. You're welcome.

See you <del>at the bar</del> on the slopes!
the

Interview: Kenneth Ryan

SFist interviews Kenneth Ryan, Prop Master of the San Francisco Ballet

Arts & Entertainment

art

As

Christmas

commentary

dance

Features

fun

High School

interview

Interviews

Last Saturday

love

Once

people

Queen

San Francisco

San Francisco Ballet

Snow

the city

emily

Kenneth Ryan, Prop Master of the San Francisco Ballet has undergone and SFist interview below. As a San Francisco native he’s got all kinds of good tips about the city. As someone who has been involved with the ballet for over two decades, he’s got some very cool insights into the background of the production.

Most difficult prop you've ever had to come up with?
The one that the designer doesn’t really know what they want. Once they’ve made that decision, my crew and I can make anything.

Coolest prop in the Nutcracker?
The settee where Clara sleeps. It’s an electric wheelchair that’s been stripped down to the drive wheels and batteries. It is operated by remote control.

Favorite ballet?
Nutcracker. It has been a part of my Christmas for the last 24 years. It is the introduction to ballet for so many people. It’s seeing what I do through the eyes of a child filled with wonder and amazement. Many of the younger dancers get opportunities to dance roles that allow them to stretch their abilities. It’s a fun time of year.

How did you become a prop master?
My boss retired and I applied and was given the job.
Peter Divine, my high school director, taught me the love of theatre and it never left. No special training. It’s mostly organization skills and common sense along with a crew that can make anything you need.

Something that most people don't notice/ appreciate your art that they really should.
The magic starts at 8 o’clock in the morning and goes until 11 o’clock at night. You need to pour your heart into it to create the magic.

* Cincinnati vs. San Francisco
Saturday, December 15, 2007. 5:00 PM, PST.
Week 15
The Messy Battle

As Jon mentioned previously, there's Raider-esque internecine squabbling goin' on within the 49ers now. Sad. Pathetic. Sigh.

But it could be worse -- at least the Niners aren't the Cincinnati Bengals.

In 2006, the Bengal players compiled a rap sheet of somethin' like twenty-something-odd arrests. And this from a team that was supposed to be fronted by a disciplinarian! In that phase of his head coachin' gig, Marvin Lewis has failed.

Not to mention on defense too. Boy, does CIN suck this season. For a team that was supposed to make the playoffs and challenge for the AFC North crown, Cincinnati has flubbed and misfired their way to 5-and-8.

That's where the sad-sack 49ers enter the picture. Sigh.

Now with third-string Shaun Hill starting at QB for the depleted dispirited depreciated Niners, this game looks to be a sad team tearing apart a sadder team.

Don't watch this game.

To Quote Gigli: "It's Turkey Time.
The big excitement in previous years was around the TurDuckEn -- a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken. Daring! But also kind of old-fashioned and over-trendy. We're all abuzz about this year's new invention: the TurFishStrich! A turkey, stuffed with fish (chef's choice, but usually haddock or mackerel) wrapped in an ostrich. There's only one bay area restaurant where you can get them: a classy European joint called Nous Sommes Chanceux que ce Soit Vendredi, located in San Bruno.

Scarfe’s pyramid turns and twists and opens up and breaks up into more pyramids, it’s a temple, it’s a mountain, it’s outside, it’s inside: who’d have thought it could be so modular? Plus, each face is a triangle, thus three sides, because everything the Magic Flute goes in three: the maids of the Queen of the Night, the angelic boys hovering above, the steps of initiation Tamino has to go through to be admitted in the brotherhood, the qualities required to be worthy of initiation (#1 is the ability to stay silent, as a Masonic loudmouth could have ended up persecuted at the time).

It’s refreshing to see Scarfe, so insolent with today’s powers that be, coming up with a set so reverent. Oh, sure, there are little inventions that would yank on Mozart’s chain, such as a menagerie of hilarious surrealist animals, half-penguin, half-turtle, or half-ostrich, half-giraffe, but Mozart seems to bring the positive, the joyful out of Scarfe. Mozart has a knack for improving karmic balance, which is exactly what the flute does in this opera.

All of you YouTube addicts out there are probably familiar with many of the "absoludicrous"* found video clips from Nick Prueher and Joe Pickett's touring Found Footage Festival (*Mr. T makes an appearance in the "Celebrities Who Teach" series). The critically-acclaimed event will be in San Francisco tonight and tomorrow night at the <del>Roxie</del> Red Vic at 7:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. and this Sunday at the Parkway in Oakland for a 5 p.m. matinee. Every screening features Nick and Joe's live, in-person commentary. If you can't make it to the live show, you have the option to buy the Found Footage Festival Vol. 2 DVD, which features Nick and Joe's commentary and the live audience laugh track from a screening at The Heights Theater in Minnesota. Note: This event has very adult content. There is a clip at the end that will shock, titillate, and stun -- shall we say, "flopping, full frontal?"

The most famous clips from the festival are probably the "world's angriest RV salesman" Jack Rebney (not suitable for work unless you have headphones) and New York cable access talent show from the '80s "Stairway to Stardom". The most endearing character from the festival has to be Harvey Sid Fisher performing his "Astrology Songs." Harvey Sid Fisher makes a live appearance on the festival's DVD, and we are pleased to know that he is a Sagittarian, just like this blogger.

As far as what clip is the most disturbing -- that one's a toss-up. The E-Z Catch chicken harvester will be sure to have you saying no to industrialized farming for good, if you haven't already. The "climax" of the instructional video, "How to Seduce Women Through Hypnosis" and Alan Thicke's PSA where he pairs up with He-Man's Orko to talk to kids about divorce are pretty disturbing as well. Oh, and there's the instructional "face exercise" video that features a mask that resembles the "Carver" from F/X thriller Nip/Tuck.

But we would have to say the clip we found most unsettling was the one entitled "Queen's Home Video," which was found by Nick and his girlfriend on a tape inside a camcorder at an estate sale in Queens, New York. It starts off with a 40-something woman with '80s bleached-blond, stacked bangs flipping off the camera, then cuts to large person in shadows wearing silver lamé and dancing to "Phantom of the Opera," which transitions to a half-naked elderly man in a similar metallic lamé outfit drunkenly stumbling/dancing to "Phantom," and ends with a house being demolished while the camera person argues with one of the construction people about whether he should be allowed to film.

The wonderfully edited Fest ends with wonderfully weird and corny exercise/self-help videos by characters such as Pat Boone, "The Dancin' Grannies," new-age O.J. Simpson, [stoned] rapper Marky-Mark Walberg, perverted sleazeball bodybuilder Arnold Swarchenegger, and a fleet of tall, dark, and flaccid naked men, a sight that rivals the Hayes Hill on the morning of Bay to Breakers (NSFW).
