Just hours after a breakfast date with one of Hollywood's Spidermen, President Barack Obama will alight in San Francisco for a whirlwind 24-hour visit.

Variety reports that on Thursday, POTUS will enjoy a breakfast fundraiser at the Los Angeles home of actor Tobey Maguire, aka 2002-2007's webbed wonder.

After that, the White House confirms, Obama will head north on Air Force One. He'll land at San Francisco International at 1:25 p.m. Friday "where he will attend a DNC and a DCCC event" that, it appears, will not contain any super heroes.

The President will then spend the night in SF, the White House confirms, and will hop back on Air Force One at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

As always, expect street and freeway closures as Obama travels through our little burg — and if you see a big motorcade Friday or Saturday, now you know who it's for!

Ousted HP Head/Demon Sheep Vanquisher Carly Fiorina Is Now Running For President

Carly Fiorina, who was behind some of the full-out craziest Senate campaign commercials in recent memory, is now running for president.

SF News

campaign ads

Carly Fiorina

demon sheep

president

US president

Eve Batey

Fans of batshit insane campaign commercials rejoice! This morning, ousted Hewlett-Packard head Carly Fiorina, whose abortive 2010 run for Senate featured some seriously insane commercials, announced this morning that she will be running for President. Of the United States.

This had been rumored for a while, with Fiorina telling the WSJ over a month ago that “I am running for [president] because I can win it and because I can do it." But today she made it official(er), announcing her candidacy live on hard-hitting news show Good Morning America.

ABC Breaking US News | ABC Politics News

Fiorina previously ran for a Senate seat in 2010, when it was revealed that she'd rarely bothered to vote. She managed to garner 42% of the vote, losing to incumbent Barbara Boxer. But not before a primary season during which her campaign released this infamous "demon sheep" ad attacking Republican rival Tom Campbell:

"I have a lot of admiration for Hillary Clinton, but she clearly is not trustworthy," Fiorina said this morning on GMA.

"I understand executive decision-making, which is making the tough call in the tough time with high stakes for which you're prepared to be held accountable."

In fact, Fiorina is so familiar with being "held accountable" that she was fired by HP after 5 plus years as CEO after "efforts to fix the $80 billion computing colossus stalled," Businessweek reported in 2005. So why does she think she can do any better with the 4+ trillion colossus that is the US? Her lack of experience, apparently.

“We know the only way to reimagine our government is to reimagine who is leading it," she says in her (sadly, unembeddable) announcement video on her new campaign website. (You can still find her old, slightly janky even for 2009 Senate campaign site here.)

Fiorina is the only woman (so far) vying for the GOP nomination for president. Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas are all in the running, and Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, is expected to announce his run on Tuesday.

So, what's Fiorina's platform? Speaking with the WSJ last month, she said that she "would aim to roll back federal regulations that she said have placed an undue burden on mom-and-pop small businesses. Her would-be presidential platform includes reductions in federal tax rates and elimination of an array of regulations."

And, it goes without saying, no more demon sheep.

Sergey Brin Asks Election Winners To Withdraw From Their Political Parties

"I must confess I am dreading today's elections," Google cofounder and CEO Sergey Brin wrote last night on his Google+ account in a post that ca...

SF News

election 2012

Google

potus

president

Sergey Brin

Brock Keeling

"I must confess I am dreading today's elections," Google cofounder and CEO Sergey Brin wrote last night on his Google+ account in a post that calls for whichever candidate winning today's election to negate their chose political party and serve as an independent. Logical and sound advice, yes?

Brin's entire post:

I must confess, I am dreading today's elections.
Not because of who might win or lose.
Not because as a Californian, my vote for President will count 1/3 as much as an Alaskan (actually it won't matter at all -- I'm not in a swing state).
Not because my vote for Senate will count 1/50 as much as an Alaskan.

But because no matter what the outcome, our government will still be a giant bonfire of partisanship. It is ironic since whenever I have met with our elected officials they are invariably thoughtful, well-meaning people. And yet collectively 90% of their effort seems to be focused on how to stick it to the other party.

So my plea to the victors -- whoever they might be: please withdraw from your respective parties and govern as independents in name and in spirit. It is probably the biggest contribution you can make to the country.

As Fast Company points out, "Read between the lines and he's almost calling for constitutional reform." Indeed.

Who Will Be Our Next BOS President?

Ripe with cigar smoke-filled rooms of tension and drama -- because all the board members hate each other, etc. -- the Board of Supervisors will soon vote for their new president.
Ripe with cigar smoke-filled rooms of tension and drama -- because all the board members hate each other, etc. -- the Board of Supervisors will soon vote for their new president. The drama this time around is that Daly sorta, kinda wants it, but no one will vote for him. Or so we assume. So Daly's trying to get John Avalos to take the lead. Which isn't a bad idea at all.

The more conservatives members of the board, however, don't want a progressive to be the president again, so they might try championing Sophie Maxwell. But Ross Mirkarimi could, and very well might, take the swing vote, and call it a day come Thursday when the vote is scheduled. (He's calling it "part beauty pageant and part power struggle.") What's more, SFBG has endorsed Mirkarimi for pres, more or less giving him their prog seal of approval.

Further complicating things, though, is anyone who's the president cannot win further elective office in San Francisco. Those who want to run for mayor after Gavin leaves office probably won't want the position. But that's merely speculation.

Also, City Hall wonks are gathering at SoMa's Temple Bar on Thursday night "for a roast of the four newbies" on the board. And it's going to be called "Roasted Supe." Hee!

Obama Takes It

According to the Associated Press, "Barack <a href="http://sfist.com/2008/04/15/b...

SF News

Barack Obama

delegates

election

Hillary Clinton

Montana

SF Politics

president

South Dakota

Brock Keeling

According to the Associated Press, "Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday."
The tally was based on public declarations from delegates as well as from another 15 who have confirmed their intentions to the AP. It also included 11 delegates Obama was guaranteed as long as he gained 30 percent of the vote in South Dakota and Montana later in the day. It takes 2,118 delegates to clinch the nomination.

His other brother, Larry, found 52-year-old Perry at his Cleveland home at around 9 a.m. this morning. Reports claims that there were "no signs of foul play."

Trying to scrounge up some info on Perry, we came across this interesting Esquire article from November about said deceased brother and a bank robbery. Something or other having to do with Cleveland Trust Bank back in 1978. It seems that "Cleveland Trust made good on their ultimatum and refused to extend the city credit on $14 million worth of short-term notes" at the time. Or something like that. So:

On December 18, 1978, Mayor Kucinich, surrounded by the media, strode from City Hall to the main branch of Cleveland Trust downtown and withdrew his paltry life savings in protest. And because it was Cleveland, on the very same day, blocks away, his youngest brother, Perry Kucinich, robbed a different bank. Perry wasn't really a criminal; he was literally insane. But it sure looked bad for Dennis. [via Esquire]
