Over over over.

So -- man, how irritating is this? It's going to be over! Thanks to the city's questionable ballot-reading machines, it's going to take weeks to finish the count. So we're lifting our self-imposed embargo early and reporting in on the status of the results.

The hard-working folks at the Dept. of Elections are releasing numbers as they get them, and here's where we're at:

--Overall stats: 30 precincts left to report in (about 5% to go, at least on the initiatives -- see note below re mayor's race status), and turnout so far is an anemic 16%.

--Mayoral race. Newsom: down from 75% in the absentees to 68%. Quintin Mecke is now in second with 8%. Chicken John at 2.25%, h. brown at .84% (552 votes). These are first-choice picks only, we think, and a sizable shift from the initial absentee count, where Hoogasian was in second and Pang in third. (Hoogasian is now in third, and Pang at fourth.)

Also, don't forget that the mayor's race is going to take longer to count because they've gotta count every single ballot that didn't vote for three candidates by hand, and not that many people ranked three separate choices, so it's slow going and these numbers are definitely likely to change. It looks like they're only about halfway through the mayoral ballots.

Along with the last 5% of the precincts, there's also still 25,000 absentees and 5000 provisionals to count. They're projecting to finish up by next week.

Ballot initiatives after the jump!
never

Political Junkie: Gavin's Back (Ow!)

with this one for his own blog -- the <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/localnews/index?bl...

SF News

Alyssa Milano

baseball

blogs

Bobby Flay

celebrity

Chris Daly

City

City Hall

college

Daly

Dancing With the Stars

Desperate Housewives

ESPN

federal building

Gavin Newsom

Jerry Rice

Jimmy Kimmel

Kevin Dillon

Kimmel

Little League

local news

Local News Blog

Mayor

Mayor Gavin

Mayor Gavin Newsom

National League

News Blog

News+Sports

Newsom

opening day

PoliticalJunkie

Rice

Bay Area Sports

Stars

T Park

rita

Oh, Chris Daly's going to have a with this one for his own blog -- the Chronicle Local News Blog gleefully reports that, at Sunday's Celebrity All-Star game at AT&T Park, former college baseball player Mayor Gavin Newsom:

1) went 0-for, not hitting anything pitched to him;
2) was on the losing side of the 13-8 score for the National League
3) hit a pop-up, which was promptly palmed by Dancing with the Stars second-placer Jerry Rice,
5) threw out his back.

Gavin's been observed wincing and walking at a 45-degree angle in City Hall today, and the emcee at the opening of the Federal Building this afternoon expressed sympathy as Gavin gripped the sides of the podium tightly so he could give his speech.

Others playing at the Celebrity All-Star game included Jimmy Kimmel, chef Bobby Flay, and Kevin Dillon from Entourage.
Okay, we'll admit it. San Francisco local politics as of late has been, shall we say, BORING. Boring boring boring boring. No shouting matches, no chicken suits, no revelations from either underage drinkers or hyphenated-named wives of best friends -- it's been slim pickings. So to hear that the simmering cauldron of rage that is the Gavin Newsom-Chris Daly rivalry is heating up!!!! YES!!!!!!

So, according to Left in SF: before Fake Question Time 5 yesterday (which seems to have been boycotted by pretty much every news organization in town), there was a rally at City Hall (.pdf) for children and families.

And how exciting! The mayor was there! Gavin Newsom, on his home turf, gives a rallying cry of a speech: why do families leave San Francisco, something's got to be done, let's build 3100 more units of affordable housing. Applause! Gavin leaves the stage so the next speaker can take the stage.

Next speaker, please! .....Uh oh! Did they say Chris...... DALY????

Chris Daly takes the mike. He thanks the organizers of the rally. And then he says, "I want you to know that Gavin Newsom is a hypocrite." AAAAAAAAAAAAH!! They look in the audience. Gavin has turned his back on the speaker. AAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!

Do you guys think it's true that Gavin Newsom refused to do anything with Conan O'Brien when Conan was in town last week because his feelings were hurt by Conan's jokes about him? If so, that is so lame! (Also, you can just scratch SFist off the Gavin Newsom party invite list right now.)

So the official story is that Mayor Newsom didn't show up for NBC's Conan celebration day last Wednesday because Newsom was "accidentally overbooked" and was doing an interview on SportsCenter about Barry Bonds instead. Oh, . Who cares what Newsom has to say about Barry Bonds. Do they call Michael Bloomberg for a comment on Wang Chien-Ming's hamstring? Was Gavin just calling up like every single TV show that tapes on Wednesday afternoons to overbook himself? "Ladies! I'll totally host The View!" (Though Elisabeth Hasselbeck does kind of seem like his type, doesn't she?)

Anyhow, so thoughtful readers were kind enough to send to us all the Gavin Newsom jokes Conan told, which are after the jump. Every day is Conan O'Brien Day at SFist!

We've been dying for a chance to use this picture from Gavin Newsom's reelection Flickr site.
We gotta say, we got chills watching this video. Entitled "Walkaway Mayor," GavinWatch has compiled a collection of all the times a certain city official refuses to answer direct questions from the press. (And it's not just when Dan Noyes is talking too!)

Given that Gavin doesn't do press conferences where he actually takes any questions either, what's the reason for ignoring the questions he doesn't like? GavinWatch posits two theories: either the mayor's afraid to answer them (the "chicken Gavin" theory), or he just doesn't think he has to (the "jerk Gavin" theory).

Well, maybe Gavin, or least his press office, should start doing daily or weekly briefings or something -- just so we can get some kind of answers around here -- but meanwhile: mmmm, jerk chicken.

Political Junkie: Gavin's Rubber, We're Glue

Update: When we originally called this post "Gavin's Rubber, We're Glue," we didn't mean <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/T...

SF News

abc

commenters

Dan Noyes

Drudge Report

hospital

Hot

laguna honda

News+Sports

Newsom

PoliticalJunkie

SF Politics

sex

sf

SFist Jon

TV

video

rita

Update: When we originally called this post "Gavin's Rubber, We're Glue," we didn't mean THAT kind of rubber.
Thanks to a faithful reader (and you commenters!) who pointed it out, via the Drudge Report (which labels it: "CAUGHT ON TAPE: SF MAYOR SIMULATES ORAL SEX ON TV CREW'S STICK MIC."). There's so many people needing to be assessed these days!

So we start off with local progressive Internet guerrillas GavinWatch. Welcome back! After their mysterious disappearance, they've changed all their old passwords, reuploaded all their old clips -- and they're ready to start watching Gavin Newsom again! (GavinWatch -- are you behind these Newsom BETRAY stickers popping up all over town?) They're having their grand reopening party this Thursday at the Balazo Gallery on 18th and Mish, which promises to be filled with their usual anti-Newsom political action hilarity. Will we find out who exactly GavinWatch is at the party? Will folks from Team Newsom Reelection try to crash? We'll just have to wait and see.

But wait! That's not the only ____Watch in town. Pat Murphy at the Sentinel's just launched his own blogspot Watch -- for (guess who): his frenemy Chris Daly! Alas, there's no exciting GavinWatch-style YouTube clips or animated .gif graphics on Dalywatch.blogspot.com yet (just a long story about the latest in Daly's attempts to launch an investigation against Murphy for ethics violations), but we're sure all you anti-Dalys will be happy to volunteer your digital cameras and Java skills to Pat Murphy's cause. As Murphy says on the site, "Watch the man with care, and render your judgment here."

And finally -- Chronicle Watch! Dude, Chris Daly has not taken down his campaign sign from the intersection of Mission and South Van Ness. We mean it, Chris, we're gonna email the big Watchers in town now! (Can someone please lend Chris Daly a stepladder to take that sign down?)

As SFist Rita put it, What Would the Progressives Do? Should they side with Leno or with Migden? It's like when two really good friends have a party at the same time and one guy has a keg of Meisterbrau and another of Sierra. You want to drink the Sierra, but if you go to that party, would your other friend get pissed at you? So, to make sure the campaign didn't get too nasty a peacetreaty of such was signed with both Leno and Migden pledging to be all cute and cuddly during the campaign. And so within days, a Migden ally went all NAMBLA on Leno.

In a blog entry, Migden advisor, biggest fan, and former aide, Michael "Mike Opera" Colbruno posted all sorts of nice things about Leno. Like that he's a "Porn King" and sort of implies that he's a favorite candidate of NAMBLA. Seriously, we don't know how much lower one could go. This might be a whole new political term much in the phrase "Swift Boating" has become. We'll call this "NAMBLAD." Leno got NAMBLAD.

We should probably go to the backstory here as this didn't just come out of nowhere. Way back in those wild and impetiuos days of 2006, Schwarzeneggar and the Republicans in the State Legislature decided to think about the children and start up a ballot initiative called "Jessica's Law" which was a crackdown on sex offenders. Among the provisions was that anybody convicted of a sex crime couldn't live within 2,000 feet of a school or park. It also said that if a person is caught with child pornography just once, they'd go to prison. Leno, along with others, thought the bill was too harsh and not very smart and tried to come up with an alternative bill. In that bill, he got rid of the provision about where a sex offender could live and moved the number that a person could be convicted of for child pornography to twenty-five. Leno's point was that it's too easy for somebody to accidently click on something they shouldn't click on and then find themselves in prison.

Now Leno didn't try and stop Jessica's Law. He didn't fight it. He just made some changes that he thought would make it a better law, something a lot of other people agreed with. But he made himself and easy target and yadda yadda yadda-- Leno got tagged as a pro-sex offender and child pornographer.

So now the big question is what is Opera Mike thinking. He supposedly still has Migden's ear so did he do this with Migden's approval? Was it some ploy to scare the living daylights out of people in Marin who don't know that much about Leno? Colbruno is so into it, he went on Left in SF and posted long comments in defense of all this. Did he do this all on his own? Did Carole put him up to it? Or does Opera Mike just really, reall dislike Leno. Who knows?

Inside [Shin's car], police found a map of San Francisco with the location of the mayor's building highlighted and a line following streets from the building to the Bay Bridge. Also found were a cutout composite photograph of the mayor, Shin and Shin's father, magazines with articles about Newsom, a laminated photograph of Newsom, three purple latex gloves and a cassette tape titled "President Newsom."

Now, we don't have laminated pictures of Gavin Newsom .... yet..... but aw, come on! There is nothing wrong with making composite pictures of yourself with Gavin Newsom. Why, check out our composite picture with Gavin Newsom, Han Shin, Peter Ragone, Hillary Clinton, bald Britney Spears, and a Fake Question Time chicken!

Okay, this has been killing us all afternoon. So we were checking out the pictures from Gavin Newsom's reelection campaign kickoff rally from Sunday on his campaign website's "Brian Blogs," and it looks like they decorated the office with lots and lots of signs featuring the names of different SF neighborhoods. Sure, cool, no prob.

But.... what's the neighborhood in the sign at the very right of that picture? The Om---? What SF neighborhood starts with the name "The Om--"? The Omni? The Ombudsman? The Om Malik? We're totally stumped. Can someone please help us out here?
