We briefly touched on this yesterday, that someone at City Hall had a heart attack during the celebration cum protest. According to SF Weekly, local AIDS activist Michael Petrelis saw what went down. Apparently, a local troubadour -- who might or might not be named "Joni" or "Francis" or... something -- was singing a song of love to Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon just before going into cardiac arrest:

A few minutes after Joni led us in singing "All You Need is Love," and at about the same time Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were exchanging marriage vows, Joni collapse. I was standing a few feet away from him as firefighters began performing CPR.

As he was suffering a heart attack, the Bilerico Project reports on what God's soldiers had the nerve to say:

One of the Christian protesters (pictured at right) was chanting at his body - "Satan Got You!" "What is the Devil whispering in your ear about now?"

"Joni," Petrelis goes on to say, is in the hospital right now, in "guarded condition."

We like the homeless, and we loathe talking too much shit about folks without homes because (arguably) it's like kicking a dog while it's down. Homeless people not only fill out the other end of the bell curve of living the capitalist lifestyle (thanks, guys!), but they're also the eyes and ears of this city when it comes to reporting crimes and seeing brutal things go down in neighborhoods where most of you would never dream of going.

They also stick up for the city of San Francisco and its alleged loopiness. Take, for example, the above image and what Jameth witnessed as it went around Civic Center last night:

OK. This shit was hilarious. First of all, the truck circled around for hours and gas is at nearly $5/gal.

Second, all this same-sex ruckus awoke the crazy folk that lounge around Civic Center all day. We witnessed one of the crazies run into the road and stand in front of the truck, much like Tank Man. HILARITY.

I don't care what people say about the crazy homeless people in SF. They all hate these bigots and started picking fights with all of them because they had nothing better to do and nothing to lose if they got arrested for assault/battery. It was awesomely amusing.

Brilliant.

Here are some images recently taken late this afternoon at and around San Francisco City Hall as Mayor Gavin Newsom officiates Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin's marriage just inside. (Congratulations, ladies. Sob!) Needless to say, people are flipping their lids: Pastor Fred Phelps crew is there, gaggle upon gaggle of gays are all atwitter, and someone even has (reportedly) had a heart attack due to the extreme matrimonial merriment. Always up for a round of fair-and-balanced reporting, SFist had the wonderful opportunity this afternoon to speak with Pastor Fred Phelps from the Westboro Baptist Church and ask him a few questions regarding his thoughts on same-sex marriage in California, which is set to be legal today at 5:01 p.m. Phelps is set to hit the steps of City Hall in protest at the same time.

"I don't think he should have defied the law," said Phelps, when asked about Mayor Gavin Newsom's 2004 decision to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. "Didn't that already happen? We've discussed this before." Phelps advised that he already issued statements regarding Mayor Newsom and the 2004 same-sex marriages in San Francisco.

We asked about Phelps' feelings about the May 2008 decision by the Supreme Court of California to strike down the California constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. "Same-sex marriage is a done deal. It's a done deal. What will happen to the State of California when it becomes legal? Well, a flood of humanity will come into your state. It will help your strapped state economy," Phelps said, with a chuckle.

"Tim Russert promoted the fag agenda. There are tapes that were released after he died ... tapes showing Russert embracing homosexuality." Fortunately, we got the Pastor back on track by asking about other (alive) celebrities, namely Ellen DeGeneres and George Takei, and whether their marriages will shed a positive or negative light on the issue.

As we already mentioned, the tenacious and curmudgeon-y Fred Phelps will be over at City Hall this afternoon, doing some sort of performance art piece or something. Needless to say, we're very excited.

What we didn't mention were the many people contacting SFist to let us know that we should not write about Phelps' fag fury. That somehow this will make him -- and more importantly, those who think like him -- go away.

But why? He's irresistible! (Come on, any group's site loudly welcoming readers with, "Welcome, depraved sons and daughters of America!" deserves your undivided attention.

Also, we don't hope for the war in Iraq to end by not having angry demonstrations in Dolores Park. We don't not try to keep Roe v. Wade in tact by not screaming in the faces of the annual pro-life rally at the Embarcadero. Why, then, are we asked to ignore the Phelps machine?

Anyway, if you want to catch his show, he and the church will be on the steps of City Hall, damning you today at 4:30-6 p.m., and tomorrow, 6/17, from 9-9:45 a.m. Please refrain from having anal sex in front of them while they protest. Thank you.
