San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has never been known for witty, off-the-cuff remarks. But at a San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Merchant’s Association crab feed Thursday night, Lee reportedly "made light" of the measles epidemic and cracked what just might have been a subtle joke about pubic lice.

Anyone who's squirmed through Lee's appearances at the Board of Supes for "Question Time" knows that our mayor lacks the oratorial slickness of his predecessor, Lt. Gov Gavin Newsom.

But perhaps with over half-a-million bucks in the bank for his unopposed re-election campaign, Lee felt he could cut a bit loose at last night's dinner event, saying, per SHOCKING report from CBS5, that “People go to Disneyland for measles, but come to San Francisco for crabs.”

(My favorite part of the CBS brief is how they then embed tweets angrily responding to their report. That is some follow up!)

But CBS, in their eagerness to alert readers regarding Lee's joke, missed another low hanging fruit, which I will now pluck for them: was Lee also mocking San Francisco's pubic lice epidemic, with his throw-away line about people coming to the city to "for crabs"? After all, he didn't say they come here to "eat crabs." No, he did not.

According to the San Francisco City Clinic, a SF Department of Public Health-managed clinic that focuses solely on sexually transmitted diseases, crabs (which are officially referred to as "pubic lice") remain a significant sexually-transmitted disease for San Franciscans and those who visit here to copulate with us.

The Center for Disease Control says that "pubic lice infestations (pthiriasis) are usually spread through sexual contact." Female crabs will lay about 30 eggs on a victim's hair shaft, eggs that eventually mature into adult crabs that "require human blood to survive." That's why they cause such intense itching and irritation that victims can end up with "sores and secondary bacterial infection of the skin." Hilarious!

And, so you know, crabs aren't just found in the pubes, according to the CDC. Victims might also have crabs on their "eyelashes, eyebrows, beard, mustache..."

Wait, did you say "mustache," CDC? Oh, boy. Not going there.

Anyway, if you're going to manufacture outrage over Lee's crack about measles, then surely you have some left over for his flagrant disregard for SF's itchy junk?

We await your angry tweets.

Protest Planned Today Against SFPD for Bayview Self-Defense Shooting Death

Oh dear.
Oh dear. A protest is planned today in Dolores Park over the shooting death of murder suspect Kenneth Harding, 19, who was killed by SFPD officers in Bayview on Saturday after evading fare and using a firearm. Even the more left among us are cocking their eyebrows at this alleged civil rights protest. Kevin Montgomery from Uptown Almanac notes:

Now, I've been alive long enough to not trust the police when they claim a victim fired the first shot (remember Mehserle claiming he thought Oscar Grant was reaching for a gun?), and I do believe everyone deserves their constitutionally-guaranteed fair trial. It also seems excessively inhumane for the police to just let the guy bleed out on the sidewalk with their guns drawn and refuse him any medical assistance. But this man doesn't strike me as a character to prop up as a civil rights victim.

As Montgomery also points out, today's protest also comes with handy hashtags your your convenience: #fuckthepolice, #munimurderer, #killercops, #SFPD, #bayview.

American Football Spectacular: A Fish Rots From The Head First

After dutifully soaking-in the coverage of Samurai Mike Singletary's promotion to head coach, the unfortunate conclusion becomes: it doesn't matter who San Francisco's head coach is.

The...

misc

49er faithful

49ers

afs

American Football Spectacular

candlestick park

Dennis Erickson

football

ineptness

jed

jed york

Jerry Rice

mad mike martz

mike holmgren

mike holmgren is a walrus

mike holmgren is the gortons guy

mike martz

Mike Nolan

mike singletary

New England Patriots

Niners

outrage

resignation

robert kraft

samurai mike singletary

San Francisco

San Francisco 49ers

scot mccloughan

sell to larry ellison

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

SFist Christopher Rogers

After dutifully soaking-in the coverage of Samurai Mike Singletary's promotion to head coach, the unfortunate conclusion becomes: it doesn't matter who San Francisco's head coach is.

The single biggest problem hobbling the 49er brand is that the current DeBartolo-York ownership is inept in overseeing the processes of running a football franchise.

Will Singletary do well? That'd be great. In fact, we him to give the team a bounce. By all accounts he is a man of integrity who connects with his players on a personal level.

And how does the town in which he became a Hall Of Fame MLB think Samurai Mike will do as head coach? "Probably pretty good," said AFS Chicago correspondent Lauren, "I mean, he has to be better than what you had."

Yuh-huh. But how much of the blame was truly Mike Nolan's to absorb? The observation remains: it won't matter how well Singletary does when all the pieces around him are coming apart.

The list of York-era failings gets trotted out time-and-again: the needless firing of Mooch; the politically-motivated isolation and alienation of Bill Walsh; GM Terry Donahue's reign of terror; the lowest bid-price hiring of Dennis Erickson as head coach; snapping off San Francisco stadium negotiations with Gavin; and alas, poor QB Alex Smith.

How will the future be hewn? How can fans trust the owners to make positive decisions? Will OC Mad Mike Martz be kept? Is Scot McCloughan the answer at general manager? What the hell is going on with getting a new stadium built in San Francisco? Or anywhere? And can you believe that they haven't managed to retire Jerry Rice's number yet?!
