The long-awaited expansion to Magnolia's beer enterprise is coming to a neighborhood (sorta) near you. As everyone knows, brewmaster Dave McLean and the Magnolia crew have been bursting at the seams of the Haight and Masonic location for over a decade, and come May they'll finally be opening their own brand-spanking new brewery in the Dogpatch--that's right, the neighborhood that's hottin' up only slightly slower than Divis and environs.

What can we expect from the new spot? A BBQ restaurant, brewery tours, special release beers and lots more space. And because apparently food and drink spots roll out like much-hyped movie releases now, this one comes complete with a handsome teaser trailer to wet your whistle. Just remember that this one is rated NC21: no one under 21 allowed. Check it:

We're looking forward to celebrating the start of summer by being among the first through those sweet warehouse doors. Until then, here's hoping the construction and permitting gods are with the Magnolia crew.

Go Eat This Tonight: Juhu Beach Club

What started as Top Chef alum Preeti Mistry’s Indian street food Mission pop-up a couple years ago is crossing the bridge and settling in to a permanent home in Oakland’s Temescal neighbor...

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

go eat this

Oakland

opening

Summer Sewell

What started as Top Chef alum Preeti Mistry’s Indian street food Mission pop-up a couple years ago is crossing the bridge and settling in to a permanent home in Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood.

Juhu Beach Club opens tonight. Eater shared the menu (note: lightning bolts are the new hot pepper) today which features some of the most memorable dishes from Juhu’s pop-up stint, like the Mumbai salad. We’re thinking of making a Bart-able dinner call very soon to try the Vindaloo chicken wings and find out what exactly a bizarre love triangle samosa (two house-made gujarati-style samosas, tamarind- date and cilantro chutneys) tastes like. A high score for having a really simple but seemingly flavorful kids’ menu, and bonus points for having a salad (kachumber - radish, carrots, celery) on there.

Doors open tonight at 5:30pm. We can see the line from here.

The FiDi got a some chopped liver love by way of a new Jewish deli, Shorty Goldstein’s, that just opened today across from the Crocker Galleria. And their PR campaign is downright adorable!

In true Jewish mother fashion, chef/owner Michael Siegel’s (he was last chef de cuisine at Betelnut) proud mama, Arlene, wrote to Inside Scoop letting them know her son was officially in business. We’re not sure if Paolo Lucchesi has an in with the Siegels, or if this was Shorty Goldstein’s across the board public relations strategy. We assume the former, but if it’s the latter, other new restaurants wanting to make an impression should take note — that shit is endearing. (Also cute, Shorty Goldstein was Michael's great grandma's nickname — she was under five feet.)

The straight-forward menu has the makings for a lot of to-go ordering - daily sandwiches, in addition to an “Everything on Rye” meat section (double meat available = yes please), and sides and desserts like cole slaw and cheesecake.

Their challah French toast and corned beef benedict (which will be alternated with a pastrami eggs benedict) were the most popular items for opening day breakfast when we gave Shorty’s a call earlier this morning. They're open weekdays from 8 am to 4pm. Thanks, Arlene.
We're being told it's a "soft" opening, so you might want to give them a call beforehand to make certain-certain that they're open before heading over to quell your bialy fix this weekend, but, whatever, they're totally open.
A particular highlight of this week's First Thursday open galleries at 49 Geary (and elsewhere around town) is a show of exquisite, large-scale color photo portraits by Richard Learoyd at the Fraenkel Gallery. Each unique direct-positive image is made with a giant camera that is basically two rooms with a lens mounted between them. This modern day Vermeer has had one of his portraits attracting unprecedented buzz at SFMOMA over the past few months, and now here's a chance to bask in the magnificent glow of dozens more of his masterworks, even for those of us who can't afford the tens of thousands of dollars to take one home.

And failed. See, after EaterWire told us about Thomas Keller "catering the grand opening party at the new Prada flagship" in downtown SF, we got moist thinking about attending the minimalist designer's latest unveiling to snap up a few pics, rub elbows with San Francisco Magazine folks, and maybe steal an accessory or eight. That is, until we couldn't get clearance from Allison Speer PR who told us, ahem, "[w]e are at capacity and i can not [sic] admit additional names," going to on tell SFist "[w]e reviewed your sigth [sic] and are UNABLE to accommodate your request."

Alas.

Ok, we admit to being unreasonably angry. And, really, we'd probably feel as uncomfortable there as we would at Club Six on a Friday night, Zeitgeist after Critical Mass, or at one of those aging gay hipster bars. But still: it's Prada. It's fucking clothes. Why should we care that someone with an "@prodigy.net" suffixed email address thinks we're gauche? Is it exclusivity's siren song? The Keller spread, or lack thereof? That we won't get to poke fun at the failed anorexic, pseudo-Condé Nast "writers" of 7x7 littering tomorrow night's festivities? Why does it hurt so much to be rejected by people you don't even like in the first place? Sigh.

On a brighter note, SFist was invited to the "The Third Annual Good Vibrations Amateur Erotic Film Festival." So. You know. There's that.

When we first read SFist Jim's email, we thought he was talking about the tiger statue (we were like, "they made a bust of Tatiana? So fast!"), but no, he meant the crowds, which were sparse to the point where there was more media there than zoo visitors.

And -- oh, San Francisco. Where else do they leave presents for killer tigers? Remember the (admittedly in the minority) pro-Presa Canario response after Dianne Whipple was killed? Will they put up a bust of Dan White to sit next to the one of Harvey Milk? For the record, the zoo is saying that the tributes being left at the statue are for both Tatiana and Carlos Sousa Jr., though we don't think the white stuffed tiger, above, is intended for the victim.

During this time historic buildings were torn down and black Western Addition residents were shooed out of the city. A movement that "never succeeded in driving all blacks from the Fillmore," but instead "destroyed the African-American community’s strongest neighborhood economic base," according to BeyondChron.

To simplify things (and presumably outrage others), Yoshi's San Francisco is now one of several efforts to restore the neighborhood back to what it once was. Whatever that was.

One perspective on the new jazz club's branch -- an "African-American perspective" -- is Harrison Chastang's. He points out that venues like Yoshi's San Francisco, the Sheba Lounge, and Rasselas already bring in a black audience. What's more, said clubs will encourage younger black audiences to drop on by. He says that "[t]he key to attracting African Americans to Yoshi's depends on the effort Yoshi's makes to inform African Americans about events at Yoshi's; and to support education programs to cultivate the next generation of African American Jazz fans." Which sounds good, but we can't imagine any amount of outreach would transform young kids into jazz aficionados. At least not in 2007.

Apple and the Marina Come Together in Perfect Nerd-Fratboy Harmony

How the church appeared on November 13. At 9 a.m., Pacific Standard Time, on the day of November twenty-third, two thousand and seven, the store at 2125 Chestnut will open its doors. And at that moment? Apple will welcome in its third San Francisco store, completing the trilogy started by its flagship location on Stockton Street and the other one in the Stonestown Mall.

According to Apple Insider, the new store will psychotically slash "dozens of items below retail cost." Yay. Or whatever. And other than zealous Mac fans smashing the shop's hymen with aplomb, we have no idea what to expect. Will there be middle-of-the-road entertainment, like the music heard on Mac commercials? Will Alioto-Pier roll on by to welcome the nerdy throngs? Will they convert us to using Mac? (Never!) Will they have free stuff? It's practically almost exciting!
