Oklahoma's Senator, often seen as one of the loopiest one, sent a letter to the to the U.S. Transportation Department wondering if any of those funds Gavin is using to give big fat raises to his flunkies is Federal. And if so, watch out Gavin 'cause here comes da Feds.

And Gavin's response? According to Nathan Ballard, the amount of federal funds being used is "Zero. Zip. Not a dime." As for why they're using the funds to pay for all the raises and lobbyists, Ballard said that there was nothing to see, just move ahead.

Ballard also pointed out that anything involving Coburn "should be taken with a grain of salt." Which it should. So, for sh-- and giggles, let's take a look at the Greatest Hits of Tom Coburn.

-Once claimed that he favored the death penalty for "abortionists and other people who take life."
-Protested the showing of famed "Schindler's List" for being too Holocaust-y
-Called Global Warming "a lot of crap."

Adventure, excitement,! All hard information was culled from NFL.com's pretty excellent draft tracker site. Proceed.

* Selection # / Team (trade info) / Player / Position / Height / Weight / School

* 01 / Oakland / Russell, JaMarcus / QB / 6-6 / 263 / Louisiana State: Sorry, JaMarcus; the Raiders only picked up one offensive lineman in the draft. So, uh, now you've got that guy and Jeremy Newberry to add to last year's offensive line unit. Start buying pain medication in bulk now, my friend, 'cause you will be sacked a lot this coming season. On the bright side for Oakland, have you seen how well the Golden State Warriors are doing?

* 02 / Detroit / Johnson, Calvin / WR / 6-4 / 237 / Georgia Tech: The founder of K Records and a key member of the Northwestern indie rock scene, it will be intriguing to see how well Johnson excels within Detroit offensive coordinator Mad Mike Martz's multi-receiver pass patterns. (Har, har.) Now seriously, either Calvin Johnson has the talent to be a success wherever they go, but Detroit's legacy of leadership futility makes it specifically difficult to succeed there. Fire Millen!

* 03 / Cleveland / Thomas, Joe / OT / 6-6 / 313 / Wisconsin: Went fishin' with his Dad for draft day rather than dealing with the New York City draft spectacle. Smart guy.

* 04 / Tampa Bay / Adams, Gaines / DE / 6-5 / 260 / Clemson: The Bucs coveted WR Calvin Johnson, but'll settle for a new defensive edge-rusher to succeed the aging pass-rushing DE Simeon Rice.

* 05 / Arizona / Brown, Levi / OT / 6-4 / 328 / Penn State: Must protect pretty QB Leinart. So, they got this guy.

* 06 / Washington / Landry, LaRon / FS / 6-2 / 205 / Louisiana State: Sure must suck to be a Washington fan. After wasting a bunch of money on free agent safety Adam Archuleta last season, Washington spends its first-rounder on another safety.

* 07 / Minnesota / Peterson, Adrian / RB / 6-2 / 218 / Oklahoma: A speedy power-back with a history of injuries, this guy is the new Priest Holmes. What that means is this caveat: sure he's great; but how long will he last?

* 08 / Atlanta (from Houston) / Anderson, Jamaal / DE / 6-6 / 279 / Arkansas: The Falcons have been trying to buy or draft a pass rush for the past couple years. Maybe this'll do'er.

* 09 / Miami / Ginn Jr., Ted / WR / 6-0 / 180 / Ohio State: Surprise! On her couch in Chicago, Jessica shouted at her television in disbelief. We don't blame her. The Dolphins needneedneedNEEED a quarterback above all else! Yet instead of picking up ND's uber-touted QB Brady Quinn, Miami picks up a speedster receiver coming off a debilitating leg injury. Who-the-wha-now? Hmph. Extremely high-risk, with poor odds of good results. This pick will determine how the the history of the 2007 NFL Draft is remembered.

* 12 / Buffalo / Lynch, Marshawn / RB / 5-11 / 217 / California: Cal's own Marshawn goes to Buffalo to replace Willis McGahee at running back, and appreciate the musical canon of Ani DiFranco.

* 13 / St. Louis / Carriker, Adam / DE / 6-6 / 292 / Nebraska: A big, meaty defensive end from Nebraska, Carriker's name is a lot more fun if you imagine Homestar Runner saying it out loud. Try!

Playing like the playoff contender that we all want them to be, the Warriors notched their first significant victory of the season last night, polishing off the tough New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets 121-116 at the Oracle.

But hold on a second bra' you say, what about that big win this week over the Mavericks in Dallas on the night that they officially hung their 2005-2006 Western Conference Championship banner in the rafters? Was not that a significant win?

By our reckoning that was a big win, but not necessarily a significant one. It was big because Dallas did win 60 games and the Western Conference last year. But it was not significant. The Warriors beat the Mavericks three times out of four last year, including both times in Dallas. In fact, they have now won four in a row in Dallas over the last three years and seemingly own the Mavericks, for whatever reason. There's also the matter of the Mavericks being 1-4 so far this year. So it's nice to take down a big skin like the defending Western Conference champeens, but it is not a significant win because it does not represent any improvement from last year.

Beware the Three Seed

Note to the remaining teams in the <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nc...

SF News

basketball

colleges

Jr

media

NCAA

News+Sports

oklahoma

On Saturday

Padres

Paris

San Diego

San Diego Padres

San Francisco

shooting

Bay Area Sports

Stanford

Stanford Cardinal

the game

chris

On Saturday, the Cardinal absolutely handled number two seed Oklahoma 88-74 behind a Walton-like performance from 6-4 junior center Brooke Smith. Smith poured in 35 points on 14 of 16 shooting. She also had seven rebounds, four assists, three steals, and played every second. Good thing too, because Candice Wiggins, sister of USF star Alan Wiggins, Jr. and daughter of former San Diego Padres speedster Alan Wiggins, was off the mark all day. The problem with watching porn in your car? Do we even need to say? Yep, just imagine you and the kiddies are coming back from their soccer match and pass one of those big cars that have TV screens in the back seat. The kids look over at what's being watched and well, the next thing you know, you're telling the kids about how sometimes when mommy, daddy, and the neighbor love each other, sometimes they do things to each other to show them how much they love each other.

Don't think this happens that much? Think again. It even has a name- "drive by porn" (warning, link is NSFW) and has already been banned in several red states like Tennessee, Louisiana, and Virginia, and almost became law in Oklahoma. And while the bill got defeated this time around, Benoit says that between new technology and the popularity of TVs in cars, it'll become more of a problem in the future. As for the CHP, they admit that watching porn could be considered a distraction for everyone involved but doesn't differentiate between porn and any other major distraction that can occur in a car.

Which is all well and good, but SFist wonders if the truly offensive thing isn't necessarily the glimpse of the porn, but the glimpse of what the people are doing while watching the porn.
Funny little thing about, Emma, however: she has two mommies. R'uh oh! This, of course, is bad because it might expose children to the fact that lesbians exist. Leading the charge against PBS is the brand new Education Secretary, Margaret Spellings, and no, we don't think she’s aware of the irony. Due to her criticism, PBS, which recently edited out a bare breast in a HBO produced movie they recently aired for fear of the FCC (and is sort of a shame in that SFist distinctly remembers that the only reason we watched “Masterpiece Theater” as a kid was because in a pre-cable universe, it was the only place to see naked breasts), has pulled the cartoon out of its rotation. Affiliate stations now have the choice as to whether or not they will air it. You can guess which states PBS stations are airing it and which aren’t. Said a programming director at a PBS station in Okalahoma City (wait, there’s public broadcasting in Oklahoma?):

"Oklahoma is very conservative. We've had off-the-wall phone calls when nothing was happening." She added that one viewer complained about an episode of ''Teletubbies" in which the characters were dancing. ''They thought that was too much" .

One has to wonder that now that the Religious Right groups are basically telling Bush that they’ll support any cockamamie idea (cough* Social Security privatization *cough) just as long as Bush sticks it to gay people, if this is W’s little sop up to them. We also have to wonder what with all this attention focused on gay cartoon characters, what sort of brouhaha will come with the impending un-closeting and lesbian marriage of Patty Bouvier on the Simpsons?
