Tonight's Fall premieres contain only one show we'll actually be watching (see above). But let's start with some of the shows we won't be watching.

CBS has moved the James Woods law drama "Shark" from Thursdays to Sundays and it debuts in its new slot tonight at 10 p.m. We watched the first few episodes of the show last year, and decided, since we aren't big James Woods fans, the show had nothing else to offer us. It was a modest hit for the network, however, it remains to be seen if it can survive a timeslot shift. It's preceded by the season premiere of "Cold Case" at 9 p.m., a show we have never, ever, watched. The network is hyping this premiere a lot based on the fact that a bunch of Nirvana songs will be featured throughout the hour. Umm. OK then.

Cycling: Feed Your Head

American sports fans, do you know what you're missing right now? -- the magical, the legendary, the completely captivating <a href="http://www.l...

SF News

bike

Cycling

drugs

international

Le Tour

NBA

NBA Finals

NCAA

News+Sports

NFL

Nirvana

race

Bay Area Sports

the game

Tour

US

us open

world series

chris

American sports fans, do you know what you're missing right now? The magical, the legendary, the completely captivating Tour de France. Yup. In fact, the Tour has already reached its first rest day after eight straight days of racing.

Let's face it: for cycling fans, the Tour is the pure Nirvana. Thanks to the Versus (formerly OLN) network, US fans (all 12 of them) of skinny tires, incredible bike handling, and human suffering can watch cycling every day for three straight weeks. It just doesn't get any better than this. It's like the NCAA tournament, the US Open, the NFL playoffs, the NBA Finals, and the World Series all rolled in to one. Every night -- every goddamn night -- cycling fans can kick back in their recliners (or on their stationary trainers), drink in the international flavor, and let the joy of cycling wash over them. Every night! For three straight weeks!

Le Tour de France: beautiful as a wake-and-bake Sunday morning on Percocet with a shot of anabolic steroids and an HGH chaser. Oh that's right, it's drug free this year. Photo of peloton climbing in Stage 8 from nytimes.com.

The major force shaping this year's Tour: drugs!

It is actually the lack of the drug use that is forming the character of this year's Tour. Though not a single rider has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, nor is likely to, this Tour is being defined by drugs, or the lack thereof. Before the Tour began, the UCI, international cycling's governing body, forced every rider in this year's Tour to sign an anti-doping charter. All 189 riders signed the document (how could they not? If they didn't sign, they couldn't race and of course, they would look guilty as all hell) and they appear to be keeping their word.

In cycling, especially in the longer stage races, recovery is the name of the game. Those riders who can recover quickly from day to day and retain the snap and power in their legs for hundreds of miles, day after day, for weeks, are the ones who find glory in long breakaways, stage wins, and leaders' jerseys. Recovery capability is one of the primary reasons for performance-enhancing drug use.

This year, the subdued, relatively human pace and activity of the peloton are the best indicators that cycling has finally started to make some inroads against performance-enhancing drug use. In the long, flat stages that characterize the first week of the Tour, the crazy breakaways and ungodly pacing so typical of the last decade or so have been conspicuously absent. Similarly, with the exception of mountain climbing automaton Mickael Rasmussen, riders have been uncharacteristically conservative in the Tour's first two mountain stages. It's as if nobody is quite sure how their bodies will hold up to the daily grind of the Tour without things like HGH, EPO, and other forms of blood doping to help them. It's the first grand tour without the overwhelming presence of performance-enhancing drugs in many, many years, and the teams look a bit unsure of their capabilities.

That's not to say that this year's Tour hasn't been every bit as exciting and satisfying as the drug years, just different. With more nasty wipeouts than a drunken NASCAR race (is that redundant?), daily sprint finishes, intriguing team strategies and tactics, and a new crop of exciting young riders, the Prologue and first eight stages of the Tour have been totally satisfying -- and entertaining.

And then there's the mountains. They say that the NBA playoffs don't really begin for a team until they win on the road. Well, in cycling, the Tour de France doesn't really start until the first mountain stage. The mountains are the Tour. It's where riders can no longer hide in the warm, gentle, wind-protected embrace of the peloton, but must carry their own weight up and over the grandiose Alps and the terrifying Pyrenees. It's about pain and determination, skill and guts, strategy and strength. It's cycling in a nutshell.

Some of the Tour's highlights thus far include the following:

The Adventures of the Superfisters: The Dramatic Conclusion

If we may be permitted to step out of subjective first-person plural for a moment:

Arts & Entertainment

American Born Chinese

blogs

books

Chinese

Chron

Comic

culture

Culture Blog

Nirvana

Oakland

Reviews

The Chron

the format

Matt Baume

I've had a lovely time hanging out at Isotope and writing comic book reviews for SFist for the last year and a half, and it's very fondly that I'll be devoting this last post to some of my favorite books from that time. But this won't be a re-review of those titles; instead, I'd like to wander away from evaluating them and take some time to think about why they're all so awesome in the broader context of culture -- basically, shifting format from "here's what the book did" to "and here's why that's so neat." In fact, that's the format I'll be practicing when I start writing my comic book column over at The Chron's Culture Blog in a few weeks. (Yes, THAT Chron! They have blogs now!) I hope you'll join me over there, where the first-person singularity and cultural comicbookery will continue unabashed. And now, on with the whee:

We hate to pick favorites, but Oakland artist Gene Luen Yang's may be as close to Perfect Comic Book as we've ever encountered. (We nearly compared it to Nirvana, but somehow that seemed a little awkward for a book that retells a Buddhist epic from a Christian perspective.) Back when nobody knew Scott Weiland was a big junkie, but wondered why every single that Stone Temple Pilots came out with sounded like a song recorded by Nirvana or Pearl Jam? When the Internet was going to change the world for, the, uh, better? When Microsoft Windows was actually a useful operating system, and our major worry was whether or not Bill Clinton could keep his penis out of the mouths of interns?

Well another thing was happening in the nineties right here in our own back yard. There was a small crew of mostly Chicago expats holed up in a SOMA office producing an endearingly snarky and admittedly trivial magazine about to be a member of Generation X. One of those Chicago expats managed to write a book about his tragic life raising a brother and producing said magazine that you may have heard of. With the money, he went and founded a local writers workshop and boutique publishing concern. That publishing concern now has copies of the magazine that started it all on sale for 10 dollars. We just might buy one.

The sold-out show was a must see for PJ fans, who have only dreamt of seeing her in such a small and intimate setting--and with no opening act! Ms. Polly arrived onstage in a bright yellow dress (with her name embroidered on the back), and pink stillettos. The dress marked this burst of sunshine's entrance with rousing applause by the salivating crowd. She immediately started belting out "The Whores Hustle and the Hustler's Whore" from her "Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea" album. She played a great mix of music from several of her albums. A highlight from her current album, "Uh Huh Her", was "Who the F***?" "Get your dirty fingers/Outta my hair!" she shrieked; PJ may be small in stature, but that voice is not small in the least. Other selections from Uh Huh Her were "The Letter", "Shame", "Cat On The Wall", "Life and Death of Mr. Badmouth", and "The Darker Days of Me & Him". The high point of the show for us had to be "Taut" from her collaboration with John Parish, "Dance Hall at Louse Point". We literally got chills as Polly writhed around on the floor of the stage, and whispered of a repentant boy named Billy. As she sang "Jesus Save Me", we thought we could die happy at that moment.

PJ's band left a bit to be desired, but that could be because we are undeniably biased when it comes to Polly's talent. One of her guitarists/drummers felt the need to pound his guitar and stumble around the stage continuously for an hour and a half. It was one thing when "Nirvana" did it in 1992, but PJ has so much of her own presense, his crazy staggering wasn't needed. While SFist loves passion, this came off as more of a pretension on his part. However, as long as PJ didn't mind, who are we to question?

Other selections played were "Good Fortune", "Dress", the dirgy "Meet Za Monsta", "Me-Jane", and the cult favorite, "Uh Huh Her", which has not been officially released...yet. Two encores later, we marveled at what we were just a part of--an amazing show in PJ history.
