Though it's sold-out, you can still find tickets on craigslist; the prices aren't too inflated, yet. We missed the beginning of Michaelson's set at the Fillmore when she opened for Matt Nathanson but we loved what we heard. She's quite endearing, not to mention very talented.

Last week we introduced you to The Lovemakers, from Oakland. They continue their Thursday night residency at Cafe du Nord. The Frail, an indie-electronica duo from San Francisco, are opening this week's set. We are totally, 100% digging their vibe. If you are tired of waiting for The Postal Service to release a new record, then look no further - check out The Frail's EP entitled, "Count on This." They are planning on having another EP out around mid-March. These guys are the shit.

Friday, there is quite a variety of local bands playing ranging from Rykarda Parasol to Sean Hayes. There's even Maldroid playing at Rickshaw Stop; we've definitely recommended them before several times. This weekend's party will be at popscene where Palo Alto natives, The Donnas will be rocking out to their new music from their seventh studio album, "Bitchin'." These girls are definitely bitchin'.

Saturday, you can hang out at Hotel Utah with Newton Faulkner. He was just nominated as "British's Male Solo Artist" for the Brit Awards 2008. Opening for him, is another California native, Jesca Hoop, a very interesting singer/songwriter who just released her debut album, "Kismet."

There is so much to do in this town. We are on overload.

Lunatics running around loose: online threats have lead UC Hastings to shut down, just for today. What are the threats? Who's responsible? We don't know. What we do know is there are a lot of unhappy, unpredictable, desperately fragile folks in the world, some of whom have had the bad luck of being burdened with pain from which it may seem impossible to ever recover; and we can only hope that our compassion for their misfortune is never fully erased by our anger at their deeds.

Re: Security Threat

Dear students, faculty and staff,

Today we have received information from an internet discussion board regarding a copycat threat of violence to the Hastings community. We have met with representatives of the FBI and the San Francisco Police and in light of the advice they have given us, we have decided to close the law school immediately. Offices will reopen and classes resume tomorrow (Thursday) as usual.

We have also secured the Hyde Street entrance to the law school, so that the only entrance and exit to the 198 Building will be from the beach. The San Francisco Police is patrolling the area with special attention to the 198 Building and the Tower.

As a precaution going forward, we will have to require that all members of the Hastings community present their IDs upon entering any Hastings building. All visitors will have to show a photo ID and sign in.

Additional security will be present throughout the Hastings buildings. Please report any suspicious individuals or activity to security personnel on the first floor of the 198 building.

New Contributor Interview: Matthew Newton

SFist welcomes its new East Bay commentator: Matthew Newton

Arts & Entertainment

east bay

Environment

Features

Interviews

love

Matthew Newton

MondayInterview

Newton

public transit

emily

Charo-Guitar is Whatever You Say

The only thing more shocking than Charo consenting to an interview with SFist is that there are people in the world who don't know who she is. Can this city get any more awesome? Yes, yes it can: The lady herself is going to be rolling into town this week, exploding onstage at the Herbst, and also out-hekling Heklina as she judges a Charo-impersonation contest at Trannyshack. Holy freaking mother of pearl. And what's that you say? The Stud's going to have an open vodka bar that night? Well, that's just peachy. The only way that night could possibly be any better is if someone said the words "and a very special surprise appearance by Olivia Newton John." We know it's not likely. But the way things are going here, we wouldn't rule anything out.

It would not be accurate to say that we "caught up" with Charo, as so many celebrity interviewers do; a more apt description would be that we were tied to a post like a tetherball and verbally slapped senseless until we were completely tangled in rope at the top of a very high pole. Our phone conversation went something like, "Hi, Charo, thanks for much for--" "Hello! I am so happy to be bringing original music of today for dancing! I am performing a new style, neosalsa and neoflamenco, because every day I want to improve myself, tomorrow when I wake up I am searching for something better. I'm going to have a bigger thing, ahead of our time, if you love dancing, you gonna wow!" At this point, Charo's voice was nearly being drowned out by the tweeting of tiny birds circling our instantly frazzled brain.

9th Circuit to Beasties: "You Have The Right to Party"

In a victory for the Beastie Boys, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today declined to revi...

Arts & Entertainment

Air Canada

Air Canada Centre

Arts+Events

Bay Area

Beastie Boys

Bob Marley

Canada

CD

Circuit Court

court

Creative Commons

dj

hip-hop

Johnny Cash

Led Zeppelin

love

Mix Master Mike

music

new music

Newton

Rick Rubin

The Beastie Boys

Toronto

Wired

Wired Magazine

jackson

In a victory for the Beastie Boys, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today declined to review an earlier decision which upheld a lower-court dismissal of a case brought by James Newton which asked that the Beasties pay licensing fees on both the recording and the underlying composition for a sample of his 1978 "Choir," which was used on Hello Nasty track Pass the Mic. The Beasties had already paid licensing fees for the recording, and the court ruled that:

[The] Beastie Boys’ use of a brief segment of that composition, consisting of three notes separated by a half-step over a background C note, is not sufficient to sustain a claim for infringement of Newton’s copyright.

Who knew that federal apellate court judges were so well versed in music theory? On the other hand, the reporter shows their complete lack of hip-hop awareness in their wire story:

The Beastie Boys helped spark the modern sampling trend in popular music with the 1989 album “Paul’s Boutique,” which incorporated bits of music from sources as diverse as Johnny Cash, Bob Marley and the Beatles to create new music.

Uh huh. The Beastie Boys, in 1989, on "Paul's Boutique," their least successful album (which SFist loves, regardless) was a "spark" for the "modern sampling trend." Oof. We won't get into the production mastery of Rick Rubin on License to Ill, which sampled Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith - and that's only an earlier Beastie Boys record. Can Reuters give Afrika Bambataa some love? We sure can! They do get credit for their promotion of Creative Commons licensing, and you can remix the track Now Get Busy to your hearts content by grabbing a copy from Wired Magazine's Rip. Sample. Mash. Share. CD.

Speaking of sampling heroes, the Beasties are currently touring their album To The 5 Boroughs with Bay Area DJ legend Mix Master Mike (who also recently came out with a new album), having recently played at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
