This Week in Le Rock: January 14-20

lovemakers.jpg
Back in December, The Lovemakers, a glam-rock outfit from Oakland, decided to stay put and forego their national tour to record their next full-length album entitled "Love is Dead." (For a band called "The Lovemakers," that's quite a title!) According to their blog, they've also decided to "be a 3-piece [band] again for the next while live. Scott, Lisa and Michael Urbano on drums. Back to basics. Very cool. Very fun." What we didn't realize, is the fact they are trying out their new stuff just for us at their Thursday night residency at Cafe du Nord for the entire month of January. Last week they played with Panda and Maldroid, while this week it's N. Lannon and Astra Heights. You might want to wait for later in the month when they play with Elephone and The Frail (who we just instantly fell in love with) on January 24th and Audrye Sessions and Poor Bailey on January 31st. Better yet, why don't you go to all three shows and support some awesome local music? With great bands playing with The Lovemakers each week, we figure you won't be disappointed. Their reputation is based on their "solid and legendary bawdy, flawless and theatrical live performance." We hope they hold up to that awesome reputation.

Friday night, there's a tie between three different shows. You can head over to Slim's to see Melee, a strong favorite of our local radio station, Alice 97.3. Don't be late because this show has equally good openers featuring one of our favorite bands, Until June, that we featured on New Tunes Tuesday back in November and Matt White, a New Jersey native. White has been featured on several TV shows with his hit single, "Best Days." Of course, if you are a bit strapped for cash, you can always head over to Hotel Utah and for six bucks you can check out The Papersons, a San Francisco rock band. Another local favorite, Magic Bullets will be at Bottom of the Hill. So many great bands on one night; we recommend them all!

The Lovemakers totally rule; their live performances are awesome.

And just in case some people don't know, Bart Davenport (playing tonight at Du Nord) is the lead singer of Honeycut. Bart's an energetic on-stage presence as well.

On Wednesday, Return To Mono, Divasonic and Anon Day are playing the Boom Boom Room.

Unfortunately, Rickie Lee Jones's Du Nord concert next Tuesday is also sold out. It appears that her final show on Tuesday the 29th still has tickets available, so people probably need to jump on those before they're gone.

@ mpantone: Thanks for introducing us to The Lovemakers last week.

Also, thanks for all of the tips!
