A pair of SFPD officers on motorcycles were struck head-on by a car at around 5 pm Tuesday afternoon, with the car reportedly being that of an Uber driver, and both officers and the driver are hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two San Francisco Police officers on motorcycles were struck head-on by a moving automobile at approximately 5 pm Tuesday afternoon, according to KTVU, and both officers plus the driver remain hospitalized after the brutal-looking crash. The officers were driving westbound on Cesar Chavez Street when both collided head-on with a car near Pennsylvania Avenue, for reasons that have not yet been explained.

KGO has footage from the scene, where we see both motorcycles on the ground with parts strewn about. A red Nissan Ultima is seen with significant damage to its front end and its left front wheel completely torn off. The station also has footage from SF General Hospital, with a stream of officers coming to pay their visits, as well as Mayor London Breed.

"They're both in good spirits, talked with one of them and waiting to talk with a second," SFPD Chief Bill Scott told KGO. "This department is like a close-knit family so when somebody gets injured particularly something this serious this is pretty common, we come here to support. This is what we do. We try to take care of each other.”

No names have been released, but eyewitnesses told KGO that the automobile driver was an Uber driver.

Eyewitness Dana Cambra said that one of his co-workers "said that was my Uber driver that I was gonna get in. She came in and went out like a ghost, like oh my lord, I was going to get in that car, you know."

SFPD would not confirm whether it was an Uber driver, but Uber put out a statement making it pretty clear that it was.

"We are thankful no one was seriously injured, and are wishing everyone a speedy recovery,” the company said in a statement to KGO. “We are continuing to look into this incident, and are standing by to assist law enforcement on their investigation."

All three crash victims remain hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening. SFPD says there is no evidence of impairment  from drugs or alcohol.

A 32-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday afternoon in a fiery collision with an SUV on Oakland’s International Boulevard, while a mother and three teens in the SUV were hospitalized.

Shortly before 3:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, a motorcyclist crashed into an SUV and the bike burst into flames, killing the 32-year-old motorcycle driver, according to KTVU.  That station also reports that a mother and three children inside the SUV were hospitalized and “treated for minor injuries.” The crash occurred at the intersection of International Boulevard and 39th Avenue, about five blocks from the Fruitvale BART station.

KTVU has surveillance video from the crash, seen above, as well as plenty of blazing aftermath footage with neighborhood small business employees frantically spraying the bike with fire extinguishers. You don’t see the motorcyclist in the flames, as the impact ejected him several yards away from the motorcycle.

"He was unconscious. He was lit on fire, but he wasn't moving,” witness Alex Esquivel told KTVU. “We tried everything we can to help him."  

The video sure seems to indicate the motorcyclist was traveling at an unsafe speed. In the words of KTVU, “Police said speed was a factor in this crash.”

There was thankfully an Oakland police officer, also on a motorcycle, who was in the area and saw the fire, arriving on the scene a mere 30 seconds after the crash.

Still, residents in the area say the location is particularly crash-prone because there’s a bus lane that many motorists use illegally to speed in or run red lights. "The city, they got to change,” Esquivel told KTVU. “There's been more than 10 crashes here already because of that bus lane."  

The name of the 32-year-old male motorcyclist has not been released, as police are still notifying next of kin.

A motorcyclist who led a CHP officer on a chase across the Bay Bridge Tuesday morning that ended with him crashing into a box truck has been identified as 36-year-old SF resident Jose Vargas.

Vargas was reportedly speeding on the westbound upper deck of the Bay Bridge around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when CHP attempted to pull him over. Vargas was also riding on a motorcycle without a license plate.

CHP Officer Bert Diaz tells KPIX that Vargas fled from the CHP toward San Francisco, where he ultimately collided with the truck just east of the Fremont Street exit.

The crash led to major rush congestion on the bridge, as three westbound lanes were blocked Tuesday morning.

Vargas ultimately succumbed to his wounds in the hospital, and he was identified Wednesday by the medical examiner.

A motorcyclist who slammed into a turning truck was killed Wednesday, and his passenger was left with serious injuries.

Police say that the collision occurred at 8:22 p.m. Wednesday, at the intersection of Laguna Street and Geary Boulevard.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the 49-year-old male driver of a truck headed west on Geary was turning onto Laguna when a 29-year-old male motorcyclist "broadsided" the truck.

The motorcyclist "succumbed to his injuries on scene," police say. The motorcycle's passenger, a 24-year-old woman, was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the SFPD.

Police say that the truck driver was not injured in the crash and is cooperating with the investigation. As of publication time, further details on who is believeed to be at fault in the collision were not available.

A woman died on a San Francisco stretch of freeway Monday, in a crash investigators say involved no vehicles besides her own.

It was 12:06 p.m. Monday when a woman piloting a Harley-Davidson motorcycle crashed on northbound Highway 101 near the Ninth Street off-ramp, California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Vu Williams says.

The woman "apparently failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and struck a barrier," Bay City News reports. She died at the scene, Williams says. The San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office has since identified the motorcyclist as 51-year-old SF resident Macshell McIlvenna.

The wreck and subsequent investigation blocked lanes of 101 until just after 2 p.m., causing a significant traffic backup in the area.

A caller who reported the crash said that the motorcyclist had been in a collision with a black Honda Accord, the Chron reports. However, investigators "later determined the [Honda driver] merely witnessed the crash and was not involved," BCN reports.

“It looks like it was a solo collision,” Williams told the Chron “Early indications are, it may have just taken that curve a little too fast — speed is probably going to be a factor here.”

A young girl was critically injured Saturday afternoon, after she was struck by a motorcyclist who allegedly ignored a Mission District stop sign.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, a 49-year-old man riding his motorcycle north on Folsom Street "ran through" the stop sign at Folsom's intersection with 25th Street at 4:22 p.m. Saturday.

When he did that, police say, he struck a 9-year-old girl who was walking in the intersection's crosswalk. The child received a head injury police characterize as "life-threatening" as a result of the collision, and was transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment. An update on her condition was not available Monday morning.

The motorcyclist, who remained on the scene, was arrested, police say. As of publication time, his name and the charges he faces had not been released.

A motorcyclist was transported to the hospital without a pulse Friday, after he struck a minivan that allegedly made a left turn in his path.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, it was 9:42 p.m. Friday when a 52-year old motorcyclist rode west on 16th Street near Harrison Street.

Meanwhile, the 47-year-old driver of a minivan headed east on 16th. That driver turned left at Harrison, right in front of the motorcyclist.

Police say that "both vehicles collided." When officers arrived, the motorcyclist had no pulse, and was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with "life-threatening" injuries.

Bay City News reports that the cyclist was pronounced dead at SF General. According to the SFPD, no arrests were made following the collision, which is still under investigation.

A motorcyclist is recovering at home today from injuries sustained when he collided with a Muni bus.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, a 42-year-old male motorcyclist was traveling south on Mission Street "at a high rate of speed" at 7:31 Tuesday evening.

The motorcyclist, police say, "made a maneuver" as he reached the 2500 block of Mission, which is between 21st and 22nd Streets. But during that maneuver he "lost control," police say, and "was ejected from his motorcycle."

The now-riderless motorcycle then hit the front end of a Muni bus that "was stopped for disembarking passengers," police say.

No Muni passengers on or off the bus were injured in the collision, police say. The motorcyclist was knocked unconscious in the crash, and suffered a broken clavicle, for which he was treated at San Francisco General Hospital then released.

Eastbound traffic on the Bay Bridge slowed to a crawl for about an hour Thursday afternoon, after a California Highway Patrol motorcycle cop wiped out as he was trying to pull over a traffic violator.

It was around noon when a CHP officer patrolling the eastbound lower deck of the bridge spotted another motorcyclist who was, ABC7 reports, not following the rules of the road.

Taking off after the scofflaw, the CHP officer lost control of his motorcycle near the off-ramp to Treasure Island, and "slid into another motorcycle" CHP spokesperson Officer Vu Williams says.

The driver of the second motorcycle wasn't knocked down, Williams says, and escaped injury.

According to ABC7, another CHP officer pulled the motorcyclist our fallen officer had been pursuing over further down the bridge and ticketed him for whatever he'd done to set the first cop after him.

CHP closed two of the bridge's eastbound lanes to perform an investigation, then reopened them a little after 1 p.m.

Williams says that the injured officer was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for evaluation, but suffered only "minor bruising" as a result of the crash.

Constantine Boyko, a 25-year-old San Francisco resident, was killed on Saturday after his motorcycle collided into a van on Cesar Chavez Street between Evans Avenue and Pennsylvania. "According to investigators, Boyko was traveling east on Cesar Chavez when he collided with the van head-on, which was traveling in the opposite direction," notes SF Appeal.

Boyko died at the scene. And the driver of the van stopped and cooperated with police. Very sad.

On Skyline Boulevard in San Mateo County on Sunday, three motorcyclists were shot with pellet guns. Facing blame are a pair of teens -- scary teens! -- "accused of using the motorists for target practice." The two boys had "allegedly been shooting at birds in the area and decided to take aim at drivers from behind a row of trees." The motorized cyclists will be fine. No word yet if the kids will face charges. [CBS 5]

A man riding a motorcycle crashed and died inside the Broadway tunnel last night, resulting in the tunnel's closure for more than two hours.

CBS 5/BCN reports, "A man was traveling west inside the tunnel when the crash happened at about 7:55 p.m., police said, and the tunnel remained closed in both directions until around 10 p.m."

The cyclist has yet to be identified. Reports go on to suggest that, though wearing a helmet, the victim was speeding before the crash.
