Her friends and family have organized an all-ages, family-friendly memorial concert that will take place at Bottom of the Hill on Sunday the 22nd. The line-up features lots of prominent musicians, including Chris Guthridge, Paula Frazer, members of Loquat, Eric Shea, and many more.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the newly established Corie Rocks Music Foundation, which will fund musical instruments and lessons for kids in the Bay Area.

From the words of Corie's close friend, Raul Sanchez:

Corie was by far the biggest live music fan I've ever known...rock, country, roots, bluegrass, jazz, indie, metal, punk, pop...she was there, in the crowd moving her feet, whooping it up, yelling for more. Her smile could be seen through the dark haziness among the crowd from the stage. Her laughter heard through an "up to capacity filled" venue. Often the first at a show, her sight and presence was encouraging — the kind of person you wanted to play your entire heart out for...and still do.

SFist was saddened to hear that Corie Woods, the author of this week's SFist Memoirs article paying tribute to the late Warren Hellman and his Hardly Strictly Bluegrass legacy, passed away suddenly on Wednesday. She was 34. Born and raised in the East Bay, Corie was a huge part of the Bay Area music community now reeling from the loss.

Here are a few words from Corie's best friend, Emily Hirsch (pictured above):

I will always remember the fun times we had there [at Hardly Strictly], even when it was foggy and freezing. As you can see in the photo we look weathered but happy. Corie loved staking out a place and bringing lots of treats to eat all day while we listened to the music. She was friends with so many people that we would constantly run into people she knew who I couldn't ever keep track of. She was truly in her element there, surrounded by good music and lots of friends.

An audio recording of Corie's full interview with SFist, which was recorded on Tuesday night at Whiskey Thieves, can be downloaded here.

To the many folks who knew her, Sunday's concert will be both a tribute to Corie and her beloved Warren Hellman.

The night will involve chanting, singing, prayers, and a reading of the homeless individuals who died.

SFist Tonight, 11/27: Castro Vigil, Sing-Along 'Sound of Music'

VIGIL: San Francisco FYI via FunCheapSF tells us about tonight's annual Harvey Milk and Moscone Ca...

Arts & Entertainment

SF Events

film

memorial

music

tonight

vigil

Leanne Maxwell

VIGIL: San Francisco FYI via FunCheapSF tells us about tonight's annual Harvey Milk and Moscone Candlelight March and Vigil, which commemorates the spontaneous candlelight march that occurred on the night of the shootings in 1978. RSVP on Facebook. (6 to 8 p.m., Harvey Milk Plaza, Castro and Market)

Filmed on October 19 at the Cupertino headquarters, Apple posted the entire Steve Jobs memorial on their site. It's available on Safari, so if you're using Chrome (like any rational, clear-thinking person) or Firefox, you can't view it just yet. However, if you're on a Mac, go to your "recent items" and click on the oft-ignored Safari icon to see Al Gore and Tim Cook talk about the fallen Apple visionary. You can also watch Gwyneth Platrow's husband's band perform a song in honor of Steve Jobs, among other notables moments.

During his opening remarks, CEO Cook revealed that the past two weeks had been the saddest of his life. "But I know Steve. Steve would have wanted this cloud to lift for Apple and our focus to return to the work that he loved so much," he said.

Cook also spoke about the last bit of advice Jobs gave him, which was "to never ask what [Jobs] would do, just do what's right."

It runs around 81 minutes long. Check it out.

Photos: Opening Day At The National 9/11 Memorial

Meanwhile, in New York City: The National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center site opened today to the public.
Much to the horror (and, sadly, delight) of the San Francisco food scene and beyond, Gaspar ‘Tio’ Puch-tzek, a line cook at Hogs and Rocks, was shot and killed outside the Mission restaurant last month. This Saturday, September 17, the noted restaurant will hold a memorial/fundraiser for the slain chef. The day will include food, a silent auction, and find memories.

If you are unable to attend yet still want support, Hogs and Rocks will accept donations at the restaurant during normal dining room hours. "You may also send donations through paypal. Please reference the fundraiser in the message box and send to the following email: drink[at]hogandrocks[dot]com."

If you care to donate a choice item for the silent auction, feel free to email marcelle[at]hogandrocks[dot]com for more details.

The vigil appeared to lack the usual fetishism that befalls SF protests -- due in part to many residents being back at their parents' estates or traveling abroad to celebrate the holidays -- the protest seemed a peaceful and effective one.
