Kayakers Rescued from McCovey Cove

Three kayakers were rescued from McCovey Cove yesterday after their vessel flipped over during a workout. The Chronicle reports: "A person on shore spotted two overturned kayaks and alerted the Coast Guard at 4:05 p.m. The Coast Guard and San Francisco Fire Department workers in a department boat rescued three people a short distance south of the cove, where the water temperature hovers around 50 degrees." The chilly kayakers were taken to a nearby hospital, but will be just fine. [Chron] more ›

7 Reasons To Love San Francisco

7 Reasons To Love San Francisco

There are countless stories to tell in San Francisco, but sometimes a picture says so much more that mere words. Each Tuesday or Wednesday, we present to you 7 Reasons. (Our sister site LAist does the same thing, which we found too inspiring to resist.) Much like Photo du Jour highlighting a nifty image shot by readers, 7 Reasons will feature photos from the SFist pool on Flickr showcasing the uniqueness of San Francisco. Here are 7 reason why the holiday season in S.F. is, for lack of a better word, rad. more ›

A Call For Whimsy In McCovey Cove

A Call For Whimsy In McCovey Cove

As the Giants take the field today, we expect seafaring fans will be paddling, rowing and sailing in to McCovey Cove for the afternoon game as well. While we love everyone hardy enough to watch the game from a plastic boat with a life vest on, something has always been missing from the splash zone. We're talking about whimsical floating things. Specifically: why aren't there more of them? more ›

'Free Mehserle' Sentiment Displayed at Last Night's Giants Game

At last night's victorious Giants game, someone displays their (misguided) affection for Johannes Mehserle, the BART cop convicted of killing Oscar Grant on a Fruitvale platform on New Year's Day 2009. more ›

SFist Blotter

SFist Blotter

Authorities are worried that the violent weekend is a harbinger for a bad July 4th. With 12 people dead (two more people were shot after the articles about 10 people killed went up), and half of those killings in Oakland, the Oakland PD is going to be upping patrols this Wednesday. more ›

Solid, Liquid, Gas

Solid, Liquid, Gas

ThreeFormsof%20Water-1.jpgThe three forms of water, in your daily news! Solid: Authorities continue to be baffled about a huge piece of ice that fell from the sky over Oakland, landing in Bushrod Park by Shattuck. No one was hurt, and authorities have confirmed that it's not the dreaded "blue ice" that falls from the septic tanks of airplane lavatories. Apparently ice does just randomly fall from the sky every now and then. (Thanks to SFist Tiffany for passing this along!) Liquid: That's not the kind of splashdown they like to see at McCovey Cove! The authorities dredged out a body from the little inlet behind AT&T Park yesterday afternoon. They think it's the body of a man who was fleeing the cops after being reported robbing offices at the UCSF Mission Bay campus. If you have any information, call UCSF officer Ed Huang at (415) 476-1414. Gas: The third entry is always the hardest. Um.... K-FOG (get it?) rival station 106.9 Free FM just fired talk radio DJ John London after he issued a death threat on Penn Jillette. London says he was upset that Jillette called Mother Teresa slutty (we're paraphrasing) and a fraud, but that his $7000 fatwa was made sarcastically. Only $7000 to kill Penn Jillette? more ›
