We're not quite done with the Matt Cain love around here. Last night, the arm behind the first perfect game in franchise history called in to Letterman, live via satellite from Angels Stadium in Anaheim, to deliver The Late Show Top Ten. Here's Cain, as goofy and giggly as we've come to expect from anyone on the Giants, reading "Things I Want To Achieve Now That I've Thrown a Perfect Game." Observe:

Actually, we wouldn't be all that surprised if an organic vegetable garden sprouted up somewhere in AT&T park. Anyhow, Cain faltered a little bit in his first start since last week's outing against the Astros. Despite a couple of rough innings Cain held on to a 5-3 win over the Angels.

And because it deserves repeated viewing, here's video of that final out that lead to the franchise's first perfect game, ever. Enjoy:

We've got a pair of tickets for you to check out Mike Birbiglia at Cobb's on the eve of Halloween (yes, Tuesday, the 30th).

Mike is one very funny guy-- and nice enough to do a SFist interview. Which makes us feel pretty good since he's a regular on Letterman and Conan. So yes, we're in a good place right now, being a giver, and talking to the Stars. If only we could figure out what to be for Halloween...

What's your take on the comedy scene in the Bay Area?
San Francisco has enough great comedians. It was a tough city to break into they don’t really need imports. Let’s just say there may be more creative people in the Bay Area than in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Is that a place?

Any advice to aspiring comedians?
Don’t be afraid to spend $80 on gas to make $50 to perform. And keep telling yourself that it’s going better than it is.

What makes a joke funny?
I think a grain of truth posed in a way the audience has never considered. Also, bananas and farts and the word “snausages” are very funny.

Is there anything that is not funny?
Well, in many instances comedy and humor are really devices for coping. In my life I’ve laughed at funerals, and with sick relatives in the hospital. We laugh to keep from crying. I believe that’s from Langston Hughes. Or Abrahams Lincoln. But you can credit “Mike Birbiglia.”

SFist Tonight

-- Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: A typical night at the cabaret this is not. Although MCMF's press folks hadn't ever heard of SFist ("Is this a radio station? We're only giving tickets to radio stations.") we're big fans of this festival that's presenting tons of great music over ten days, much of which is from our best local artists. We salute founder Jeff Ray for keeping it going into its eleventh year.

On to this week's show recommendations: Tonight we're really excited to see Birds & Batteries at the Hotel Utah. Their album Selections from Nature vs. Nature has been on heavy rotation for us, and we can't wait to hear the new record they've been working on. They play tonight with Sky Pilots, Low Red Land and Conrad Ford. Over at 330 Ritch, Popscene presents Midnight Movies followed by Popscene prom at midnight. Mission Creek presents a show with the velvety vocals of Petracovich at Make-Out Room. Petracovich's Jessica Peters reminds us a bit of The Cardigans' Nina Persson's gentler, folkier moments.

Download Petracovich's "Telephone" and "Summer Trees"

On Friday, Death Cab's Ben Gibbard, Pedro the Lion's David Bazan and Johnathan Rice strip songs down to their bare essentials at the Fillmore. On Saturday at 2pm head to Amoeba to see a free show by San Francisco's Or, the Whale. That night, we recommend either of these two great Mission Creek shows: Lavender Diamond and The Watson Twins with Winter Flowers at the Independent, or over at the Hemlock catch King Kong and Port O'Brien. We'll be at Great American to see our friends in The Knitters.

You know, the whole thing reminds us of an old David Letterman bit where he'd have people dressed in bunny suits do all sorts of crazy things in New York to see what kind of reaction they'd get. The bit worked for the simple reason that people dressed in bunny suits is comedy gold.

Twenty-four hours of on TBS starting on Christmas Eve? Check.

It's a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve, (albeit on NBC and butchered by an hour's worth of commercial interruptions)? Check.

And, once again, the most important yuletide TV offering, the return of the "Holiday Log" on Action 36 (cable channel 6). Get out those stockings and hang them above the "fireplace" this Christmas Eve (it's airing from 10 p.m to midnight) and wake up to a warm TV log Christmas morning (from 9 a.m to noon). And if you'd like to learn more about this weirdest of televised traditions, watch "The WPIX Yule Log: A Log's Life" on cable channel 33 at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night.

We're suckers for holiday traditions. And if it's a new thing, will they have to hire a publicist and go on Letterman to offer an apology? See, lately, there has been an upturn in sea lion attacks off the California coast as this hasn't been the first case. Scientists aren't sure why the recent upsurge in attacks, but they think it has something to do with the sea lion population increasing. This means more interaction between human and sea lion as well as there being more competition over food. Hungry sea lions equal angry sea lions and you wouldn't want to see them when they're angry.

Since nobody is buying our toxic waste theory and having seen Deep Blue Sea a few times, we have another theory to espouse. Mainly that it's all some secret stunt by some hi-tech company to train an army of sea lions to help conquer the world by installing computer chips into the sea lions brains to make them not only smarter and more vicious, but able to think logically. Then, of course, when the word is given, and Samuel L. Jackson is eaten, the sea lions will set forth and attack. And we can only think of one company dastardly and evil enough to think up something like this-- Google.

Oh, you know they would.
We promise never to attempt lame rhyming ever again. But we DID want to let you know that there's a "Creature Comforts" marathon on BBC America tonight, starting at 7:30 p.m. with the premiere of "Merry Christmas Everybody!" If you've ever seen Nick Park's Oscar-winning short "Creature Comforts," then you know what the show is like. And if you haven't, go watch it RIGHT NOW!

Also tonight, Darlene Love will be making her annual "Late Show With David Letterman" appearance to sing his--and our--favorite Christmas song, "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home.)"

Speaking of Christmas songs, KQED will be airing local boy Chris Isaak's Christmas special at the crack of midnight on Christmas Eve. Or, if you've got digital cable, you can catch it numerous times on KQED Encore, channel 189.

As for the rest of the holiday weekend, you can probably manage to watch all of A Christmas Story during its marathon 24-hour run on TBS by just flipping to it for 10 minutes at a time throughout the weekend, (or, if you've never actually seen it, we highly recommend sitting down and watching it all the way through. It really is that good.) On Saturday at 8 p.m. NBC will re-run It's a Wonderful Life, another Christmas movie that lives up to all of the hype. And if you've never seen it before, because you happen to be blind, you can listen to former President George Bush give a descriptive narration of the film through the process of "Descriptive TheatreVision." (We kid you not.)

But we think the single most important television programming this weekend can be found on "Action 36" (cable channel 6) from 7 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to noon on the 25th. We are speaking, of course, of "The Holiday Log." Commercial-free video of a burning fireplace, complete with cheesy Christmas songs! You can hang your stockings under the TV with care, and if you sit REALLY close, we think it might even warm you up a little...

Piedmont is known for being full of seriously nice houses -- we always joked that the city's raison d'etre is so that rich folks wouldn't have an address in Oakland (okay, we bear a grudge -- we were denied a pass to the Piedmont tennis court because we lived three doors down from the city line). But David Letterman has made the kids at Piedmont High known across the country thanks to a quirky rite of spring -- an annual bird-call contest.

Every year, the winners get flown to New York to appear "The Late Show." So we were excited when we tuned in to Dave tonight for the first time in a while and saw that they'd be the guests! After the monologue, a visit with Rupert at Hello Deli (check out the interview at Gothamist), some jokes from behind his desk and a commercial break, they came on.

One of the kids, when asked why he entered the contest, admitted "our teacher needed some help with it, because people weren't doing it." All of them are just cute as buttons, and the way they totally sell the birdcalls is hilarious. Check out the clip over at the Late Show website.
