In an effort to become "more of a true Web publication," the AP English class of the interwebs, Salon.com, laid off six editorial staff members. CEO Richard Gingras confirmed to Gawker that the online publication chipped away three editors, one writer, one photo editor, and one producer. The only name identified of the fallen six is culture editor Joy Press. Heather Havrilesky, we can only pray to God, will still remain with Salon after its facelift. Forever. She is, after all, a national treasure, one of the few literate folks who can write about TV without making you want to rip off your eyelids. She's that good. (And, of course, there's this.) Anyway, good luck out there, ex-Saloners.

Chipping away at the employment rate in the Bay Area, health corporation Kaiser Permanente plans to eliminate 275 jobs in Walnut Creek, Napa, and Pleasanton as it "restructures its information technology operations." The Oakland-based company will cut 860 jobs nationwide as part of their plan to have IBM mange most of heir data centers.

"In the face of a $42 billion budget shortfall, and still no budget, measures are needed to preserve the State’s cash." And with that begins the official layoff letter sent out to 200,000 state workers on Tuesday, notifying them that they "face layoff, demotion in lieu of layoff, or transfer." Arnold made good on his promise to send word out of impending terminations if a budget agreement wasn't reached on Tuesday. It wasn't; he did.

In other news, Schwarzenegger just landed a cameo roll in Sylvester Stallone's "ultra-cool" homage action films, The Expendables. Way to go, Arnold! With a cast that includes Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Sandra Bullock, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, and Forest Whitaker, we smell a hit. Nice to hear things are coming up roses for someone in California.

Yahoo commences with its 1,500 layoffs starting today. Hundreds of employees were notified, with layoffs continuing until year's end. In an effort to "trim $400 million to shore up the company's finances," the Sunnyvale-based company is reducing its workforce by 10 percent. Valleywag has magically procured the transcript managers are asked to follow before showing employees the door. On the one hand, it's super creepy (DO's: "Be attentive - maintain open lines of communication; pause before continuing"); but on the other, since they have so many employees to trim in an industry filled with asperger-y types, a script somehow seems to makes sense.

Alas, today is "major pink slip handout" day over at Yahoo, where "police and security teams have been scheduled to provide order in case anyone goes postal." But things are getting ugly overseas as well. According to Valleywag, "the entire Dublin Finance team was laid off, to be outsourced by some place in Romania. Europe learns who gets axed [today] -- let's hope Rich Riley is among them, but unlikely as he is another Jeff Weiner - completely golden."

We have no idea who that is exactly, but still: yikes.
