• Walmart has settled a lawsuit filed by district attorneys in Santa Clara, San Diego, Sonoma and San Bernardino counties alleging they violated the California’s False Advertising and Unfair Competition Laws. The company paid $5.6 million in a suit that claimed the company charged customers for baked goods and produce that weighed less than labeled. [Bay Area News Group]
• Voters in Lincoln, Nebraska grilled Republican Rep. Mike Flood at a packed town hall this week, including one woman whose smackdown quickly went viral. Flood later dismissed the crowd as “unrepresentative” and defended the Medicaid cuts as necessary. [NPR]

• The recent wave of dildo-throwing incidents at WNBA games may be linked to a stunt by promoters of a new memecoin, whose value has spiked since the incidents began. [New York Times]

The four hours of local news every weeknight on KRON4 will be replaced by the likes of Riverdale and FBoy Island, as KRON4 will become an affiliate of the CW Network on September 1.

The local TV station KRON4 has the most, shall we say, unique prime time broadcast schedule of any Bay Area TV station. There’s two solid hours of local news from 5-7 p.m., followed by Inside Edition at 7 p.m., Entertainment Tonight at 7:30, and then another two hours of news from 8-10 p.m. But that format is likely to go out the window, as SFGate reports that KRON4 is becoming an affiliate of the CW Network.

The transition is scheduled for September 1.

If you’re not familiar with the CW Network’s repertoire of television programs, they play two hours of prime time TV shows most nights, generally from 8-10 p.m. The most critically acclaimed of these is the “Archie” comic reboot Riverdale, and they’ve also got the current version of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, a Nancy Drew show, and some DC Comics spinoffs Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights. They're also getting the HBO reality show cult hit FBoy Island and its spinoff FGirl Island.

And controversially, the CW is also the exclusive TV home of LIV Golf, the Saudi-owned gold league that’s torn apart the pro golf community. But LIV Golf did just merge with the PGA, so its unclear what’s left of that “exclusive” deal.

KRON4 had been an NBC affiliate from 1949 to 2001, was independent for a couple years after that, and has since been run by media organizations like Young Broadcasting Company, MyNetworkTV, and Nexstar in the interim.

Oakland police released an image of what's thought to be the vehicle — an early 2000s white Acura TL —  carrying the person responsible for killing a KRON4 security guard. The department is asking for anyone with knowledge of the car to come forward.

It was reported by multiple local news outlets that KRON4 security Kevin Nishita passed away Saturday after sustaining gunshot wounds during an attempted robbery earlier in the week. (On Wednesday, Nishita was protecting a news reporter for the outlet who was covering a story about a masked mob breaking into a clothing store in Oakland when he was shot in the chest by a man trying to steal camera equipment.)

Though Nishita was promptly transported to Highland Hospital — where, upon arriving, he received emergency surgeries to help stabilize his condition — his wounds proved too severe; Nishita succumbed to those injuries early Saturday morning.

“We are devastated by the loss of a security guard and our friend, Kevin Nishita," wrote KRON4's Vice President and General Manager Jim Rose in a statement, per the station. Nishita leaves behind his wife and two young children.

"Our deepest sympathy goes to Kevin’s wife, his children, his family, and to all his friends and colleagues" Rose continued in his statement. "This senseless loss of life is due to yet another violent criminal activity in the Bay Area. We hope that offering a reward will help lead to the arrest of those responsible so they can face justice for this terrible tragedy."

Pictured above, the Acura TL produced sometime between 2004 to 2008 — complete with a sunroof and no front license plate — is suspected to contain the person responsible for claiming Nishita's life. Should anyone have information that could lead to an arrest in relation to the crime, a reward of up to $27.5K will be offered.

KRON4 also noted that donations to Nishita's family can be made through the "Kevin Nishita Trust," which is being organized by the  Metropolitan Bank at 381 8th Street in Oakland. However, donations can be made either in person at any Metropolitan Bank location or via mail.

Remember back in August when beloved local finger-wagger Stanley Roberts suffered a series of small strokes and went abruptly off the air at KRON 4? Well, happily, he received treatment in time, and has been recovering the last two months, and he's already back at work. He posted the video above announcing his return to the newsroom to fans today.

The Chronicle reports that Roberts took "swift action" after he thought he might be having a stroke on August 28. "All of a sudden my arm felt like it weighed 80 pounds. Then I tried to talk and couldn't," he said.

Roberts was rushed to the emergency room in time, he looks pretty well recovered and able to talk easily in the video above. He was, in fact, tweeting just hours after the strokes occurred, saying he'd only be out "a few days."

Welcome back, Stanley!

If you watch only one local news report about the 4/20 shenanigans in Golden Gate Park, please do yourself a favor and watch Stanley Roberts' look at the annual smokeout for his incredibly entertaining, "People Behaving Badly" segment on KRON4.

We've been fans of Stanley's since that time he investigated Dolores Park graffiti and pirates in the Bayview, but there's nothing more fun than watching some stoner kid from the outer counties explain to him how a gas mask bong works. And when he says, in that impeccable newsman voice, "It was crazy. Never have I seen so many ways to ingest weed." — well, it's probably the closest thing we'll get to another Daily Show segment. Someone should get Stanley Roberts a Local Emmy.

You saw the photos of the Civic Center rally protesting education cuts, but across the Bay they weren't fucking around. A group of a few hundred protesters who had gathered at Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland broke off and marched onto the 980 freeway, laid down, and blocked traffic going in both directions toward 880 and the Bay Bridge in order to call attention to the cause. A bunch were arrested, including some juveniles. As Oakland North reports, 150 were arrested in total and bussed off the scene by police via the 4th and Jackson off-ramp.

Sad news for fading local news/infomercial network KRON4. Rich Lieberman has word that the former NBC affiliate lost its traffic copter. "As usual, its a money deal," Lieberman points out, going on to mention that the news station has more trouble than expensive aircrafts. "The station's financial turmoil continues down a beaten path: almost all employees, including a few prominent anchors are being paid on an 'at-will' scale, which in layman's terms essentially means 'no personal services' contracts."

Get out those water wings, kids! The worst of the rain is expected to fall today between, um, right now (7 a.m.) and 7 p.m. tonight, and there's a wind advisory in effect until 11 a.m., at which point the gusts of 60 to 70 m.p.h. should subside and leave us with just mildly unbearable wind and rain through tomorrow. The 280-101 connection at 6th Streetis closed due to flooding. PG&E is already out there fixing power lines, Pacifica is bracing for wind damage, and Santa Cruz is bracing for mudslides in recently burned areas.

The kicker, at the risk of getting all sensational and apocalyptic: THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

As KRON4 is telling us, a 62-year-old homeless woman named Fafa Chan, who police recognized at a bus stop after seeing her starting a fire on a surveillance video, is the prime carsonist suspect in that string of auto fires last month, and also in that string of porta-potty blazes this past winter. Both strings of fires were centered around the Russian Hill vicinity, where Fafa likes to hang, but so far police haven't put together much evidence of Fafa's guilt besides the fact that the fires stopped as soon as they had her in custody. Obviously she isn't much of a talker.
