Twenty-six people were treated for nausea this morning at Recology's Pier 96 recycling center after being exposed to what officials initially thought might be a hazardous chemical spill. According to ABC 7, there is no larger threat to the public and the results of exposure are not life-threatening.

The first reports of a mass sickening came in around 8 a.m., and CBS 5 reports that a hazmat team was called in shortly thereafter. The plant in question sorts material from San Francisco's blue recycle bins, and a wide area around it was cordoned off as officials searched for the cause of the sickness and treated employees on site.

Two people required hospitalization.

Roughly an hour after the spill was first reported, officials with the SFFD determined that a chemical spill was not at fault. Rather, whatever caused the scare "was trash and standard material" — leading to the obvious question of what kind of recycling or trash is nauseating enough to make that many people ill.

Today's incident is not the first hazmat scare at Pier 96. In 2010 the West Coast Recycling center had to be evacuated after some sort of box on a conveyor belt broke open — sending white powder into the air and sickening employees. One individual was hospitalized in that case and 11 required treatment.

Someone at a China Basin loading dock took "if you see something, say something" to the next level this morning, when they called the San Francisco Police Department to report a "suspicious package" containing an "unknown liquid." The package? A bottle. The liquid? Booze.

At about 10 a.m. Tuesday, KCBS reports, police were called to 185 Berry Street, a building across the street from AT&T Park, after someone discovered the booze bottle and thought that its contents might be worrisome enough to "call for a hazardous materials team to come and investigate."

According to ABC7, the building, which they say was evacuated, "houses UCSF's imaging center at China Basin and the online storage site Dropbox."

Berry Street between 3rd and 4th Streets were closed to traffic while SFPD responded, but reopened at around 11:30 a.m. when "the suspicious package was deemed not hazardous," SFPD spokesperson Officer Gordon Shyy says, as "it was a bottle of alcohol."

According to SF Weekly, the bottle contained Scotch sent to a Dignity Health executive, but as the "package was wet and leaky," Dignity staffers decided the matter was suspicious enough to merit police intervention.

We mock, but it's probably better to be safe than sorry: after all, just a few hours from now, the area will be teeming with people, all headed to AT&T Park for playoff game 4 between the SF Giants and the Washington Nationals, which is scheduled to begin at 6:07 p.m.

Hazmat Situation Closes Northbound S Van Ness

Just in time for your evening commute, northbound South Van Ness Ave from Mission Street to Market Street has been close due to a hazmat situation.
2:10: Both St. Francis Memorial Hospital and the post office at 900 Hyde have now been shut down.
San Francisco Department of Public Health spokeswoman Eileen Shields said the five employees were evaluated at the hospital and released around 1 p.m. The hospital was not evacuated, hospital spokeswoman Dee Mostofi said. The Office of Emergency Services is asking the public to avoid the area around Pine and Larkin streets. The post office remained shut down as of 1:15 p.m.

12:48: We're getting word that the emergency room at St. Francis Memorial Hospital (1400 Pine) has shut down today due to a hazmat situation.

A Hazmat team has closed San Jose Valley Medical Center's emergency room after an unknown chemical exposure. At least 37 employees, 47 patients were given Silkwood scrubdowns. The toxic mess, it seems, came from a nearby house. According to the Mercury News, "they don't know what kind of toxic substance was released around 8:05 a.m. inside a house on the 3000 block of Yucca Avenue. A barrage of hazardous materials crews are on scene trying to sort out the mess, police and fire dispatchers said." Also, the Merc is reporting that an 18-year-old man died this morning, possibly due to the spill. We'll update as soon as we know more.
