While waiting with his 26-year-old girlfriend, police claim a suspect drove up to the couple, exited his vehicle, and then "approached the victims and started shooting," killing the Oakland man and wounding his female companion. The suspect then "returned to the vehicle and fled the area," driving off in a "drove off in a gold-colored car." Cops have neither suspects nor description of the assailant(s).

-- Speaking of SOMA nightlife, crime magnet Stillman Street set the stage for two pistol whippings crime muggings a little before 11:30 p.m. With each incident occurring within about twenty minutes from each other on the exact same spot, according the neighbors, two people were approached from behind, whacked on the noodle with a gun, and robbed of their personal belongings. The police showed up later in the night and flashed their siren lights menacingly.

This happened a block away from 715 Harrison (i.e., City Nights). The Stillman strip between Second and Fourth streets -- a notoriously and continuously police-free zone -- has seen shootings, neo-Nazi graffiti, near sexual assaults, and countless violent beatings just over the last six months. "Help me," Stillman Street replied when questioned on its recent spat criminal mischief.

-- Fortunately, SFPD is on the scene when it comes to unruly homeless folks brandishing cutlery. On Sunday afternoon at around 3:20 p.m. a "panhandler who was shot by a San Francisco police officer after lunging at police with a knife" later died at San Francisco General Hospital. Sending police on a chasing starting from the median strip of Van Ness Avenue at Greenwich Street to Polk Street, three -- yes, -- cops caught up with the man who then pulled a knife on them, which resulted in his shooting death.
three

R.I.P. Queen of Mean">
Although the billionaire hotelier once allegedly (the help is never a reliable source) uttered the words "only the little people pay taxes," Leona Helmsley today paid her biggest tax bill of all, breathing her last breathe in Greenwich, Connecticut.

One has to hand it to Helmsley for making it all the way to the age of 87. She had a rough time of it in the late '80s with all that tax evasion, employee abuse, and incompetent husband stuff.

And while you may think this sad news has nothing to do with San Francisco, just take a look in that Stern Grove Festival program lying in a pile on your kitchen table. See that annoying, yet whimsical advertisement for Parkmerced? Well, Helmsley used to own the joint. Yeah. Leona sold it in 1999 to people who apparently think a redhead (no offense, Brock) jumping around in a tight t-shirt and the slogan “Welcome Home” is going to entice people to move to a neighborhood even more in the boonies than ours.

Anyway. R.I.P. Leona. Good luck with everything on the other side. And fear not; wealthy vixens are sure to forever abuse the help.

Blocker, No. 7: Montgomery St. on Telegraph Hill

You know you’re dealing with an isolated stretch of Montgomery St. when a driver can’t reach it without first leaving Montgomery St. And in an addressing quirk that must drive new workers at the North Beach post office bonkers, the northernmost apartment building on this block is actually 303 Greenwich, even though Greenwich as a cross street doesn’t exist here. After all, the only cross traffic up here on the precipitous eastern slope of Telegraph Hill is on foot.

Stunning bay views, folial grandiosity, and hill-hugging construction schemes dominate this block of Montgomery, bookended by the famed Filbert and Greenwich steps. The street itself is a bi-level roadway divided by a tall center wall lined with numerous pine trees, not dissimilar to Lawton St. in Golden Gate Heights, or Arlington Ave. in the Berkeley Hills. It’s designed for neither speed nor mass amounts of auto traffic. Aesthetically, however, it’s nearly unbeatable.

Frameline: Lez be Friends

First, the bad news, then the good news -- isn't very funny. The film is presented as two half-hour sitcom episodes, and the jokes seldom manage to rise above quality. One typical exchange: when a lesbian finds out that her naive gay friend has been slutting around, she asks, "what happened to my nice Jamie?" He whines, "I am nice." And she rejoins, "yeah, nice and easy!" The laugh track responds as though this was actually funny; and it feels uncomfortably like a sitcom that should've never been greenlit.

The most bewildering thing about the finished product is that it's supposed to have been done in the style of an old-fashioned, thirty-year-old TV show; but it feels completely modern. Everything about its vocabulary -- the framing of shots, the length of the scenes, the actors' blocking, the pace of the dialogue, the lighting and audio -- could not be more 2007 if they tried. Intercut with actual vintage commercials, the failed attempt at oldfashioneyness comes off as a hopeless, depressing anachronism, like a rapping grandma or the one 40-year-old at a Bright Eyes concert.

Up and down Polk Street, from about Greenwich to Broadway and back again. What I noticed about this guy second or third time around was that he had a dog on his lap while he was doing all of this. Twice the dog almost fell off the bike as he landed.

So I decide to call the police because I'm an animal lover and stuff like this makes me crazy. But not only was he going to kill this dog but most likely end up causing God knows how much havoc and accidents on the street. It wasn't a shootout in the Mission but it was incredibly effed up and I'm sure illegal in many ways.

So I call the non-emergency police number I have stored in my phone, which is disconnected. Then I remember 211 and how it is San Francisco's saving grace and the answer to all our problems. All I get is Verizon telling me the number is not in service. I call again, thinking I did something wrong. Same response. []

Then I call 411, ask for a non-emergency number, and they give me 553.0123, connect me, and I get a recording in 27 different languages, and then what sounded like a fax signal with no end. I call again. Same thing.

So I decide to call 911. I figure I'm allowed at this point. I'm put on hold after another recording in 27 languages. I call again. Same thing.

But after the week we've all had, we feel like the break is not only needed, but deserved. Just look at everything we've been doing!

Gothamist headed into the Memorial Day weekend with a number of tasks accomplished. They worried about Long Islanders giving New Yorkers a bad name. They tried a juice cleanse diet. They chatted with Steve Guttenberg. They lamented the crowded L train. They wondered if old, gritty New York was better than safer, shiny New York. And they cooed over baby falcons born on the Throgs Neck Bridge.

Londonist took a tour of their city's great landmarks this week. They visited Trafalgar Square, which, for two days only, was carpeted in grass. On to Greenwich, where a mysterious fire caused severe damage to the Cutty Sark ship, while another vintage vessel sailed along the Thames. Finally, from rags to riches when a hobo who has lived on Hampstead Heath for nearly twenty years was granted ownership of the land.

Three things on Chicagoist really had people talking this week, and it's about time they had a long, restful weekend. This week, the Feds subpoenaed their governor's campaign fund records, there was a big debate about whether the Macy's/Marshall Field's boycott is working, and the CTA threatened to raise fares and cut services... again.

Torontoist celebrated their holidays last weekend (crazy Canadians!) in style: with front porch fireworks. This week, however, perhaps because of the grumpiness of returning back to work, Torontoist was pretty indignant: they got pissed off about Audi vandalizing their public space, some douchebag blaming gun crime in the city on women, and some other douchebag who literally had beef with the mayor. Their commenters endlessly debated potential reform to Ontario politics and the collapse of some gorgeous historical buildings.

Bostonist has been absolutely hopping with breaking news. First, the circuits of the subway system crackled, nearly squashing a commuter between two doors and trapping a group of riders on a train. Then, the city streets got hot when a gang member shot a police officer. In the political realm, the battle over gay marriage heated up – thanks to an impending gay divorce. And, in sports, Bostonist's hopes were dashed when the unlucky Celtics discovered they won't be getting a hot draft pick. So much for wearing green all the time!

Austinist had a chat with Chalk director Mike Akel, who's probably glad that school's out. Another local institution, the Bass Concert Hall, also started its break to begin extensive remodeling work. The Austinist and KEXP-sponsored weekly music residency continued to be a big success. Elsewhere in Texas, a student protest didn't go as planned.

For Angelenos leaving town, choices of wine country or crazy times in SFist territory were only the beginning of the list. Travel is good, but moving is too—so why not use abandoned grocery carts to hall your stuff around? A new local magazine is hitting LA with rumored problems (not that the eponymous city mag doesn't have their own), and never moving in were the short-lived Doc Martens ads featuring dead punkers that offended many (and it's hard to offend in a town where the County Coroner has a gift shop). And of course, whether it be movie premieres of Knocked Up, a CalArts graduation or a Chicken Car, the LAist blogarazzi was out in full swing.

Oh No Ed Jew! SFist was all over a member of the city's board of supes who had his office and house raided by the FBI on accusations of taking big bags of cash. And, of course, Muni (an awesome idea on how to revolutionize it)! And, in response to the city's paper of record announcing 25% layoffs, SFist asked its readers: "Why Aren't You Paying For The Chron?" Whew, an exhausting week: but nobody needs this break more than a girl that had been a fake student at Stanford for the past school year!

The two SF Indie Fest films we watched on Friday night at the Victoria Theatre made for a very thought-provoking juxtaposition. The short film Mischief at 16th and Florida captured the rich history of an industrial area (and the river beneath it) located just a mere five blocks from the film screening. The feature film The Ballad of Greenwich Village was related to us through the countless anecdotes of the many amazing artists, performers and activists who have called Greenwich Village home over the years. There is a second screening of these films again tonight at the Victoria Theatre at 9:30.

The above video is the trailer for Mischief at 16th and Florida.

Hell yeah, we'd trek all the way to San Jose to see Molly Ringwald! What self-respecting John Hughes-fanatic/thirty-something would pass that one up? Well, Molly's come a long way since the '80s (haven't we all?), playing on stages here and in Europe, and even making a film in French during her time living in France. And now she's kicking off the national tour of Sweet Charity at American Musical Theatre of San Jose, playing the unluckiest romantic in New York City. We actually got to interview Molly as part of our day job (she's super sweet), and she told us that she just loves the Fellini film the musical's based on. So we Netflixed it. Uh, the musical's probably a lot more fun.
Playing September 19 through October 1

The God of Hell at Magic Theatre
Playwright Sam Shepard got his start at the Magic Theatre back in the late '70s, and he's since put the theater company on the map. He's pretty much its claim to fame, which was renewed in 2000 when Shepard dusted off an old play, The Late Henry Moss, for the company. The play wasn't great, but it starred Sean Penn, Woody Harrelson, Nick Nolte and Cheech Marin, who were the subject of many a theater insiders' rumors. (One classic involved Sean Penn, a crowbar and his dressing room.) The production also prompted a behind-the-scenes film. But we digress. God of Hell is a more recent play, one of many political plays that emerged around the last presidential election. Shepard clearly skewers the current administration in the piece, calling the play a "a takeoff on Republican fascism," and hoped it would have some affect on the voters. Can't imagine there were a heck of a lot of Republicans at the world premiere in Greenwich Village. Can't imagine there are a heck of a lot more here in SF, but hey, even the choir needs some preaching, or at least some catharsis.
Playing September 23 through October 22

A local SoMA day care center for underprivileged youth puts its Keith Haring mural on the block, with no local takers.

Back in 1985, artist Keith Haring painted (for free) a funky, 77 foot mural along the wall of the gym of the South of Market Child Care Center. He painted it in one day, while in town for another project down the street at the former club DV8. Now, the center's lost its lease on the site, and hopes to pay off the $1 million+ costs of building its new facility by selling the mural. Foreign investors have expressed interest but the center wants to keep the work in the Bay Area if at all possible. (The DV8 mural was sold when that building was torn down and is now on display in Italy.)

However, no one in the Bay Area wants to buy it -- with the Fine Arts Museums (the DeYoung and the Legion of Honor) saying it's not Greenwich Village-y enough, and the SFMoMA saying it already has a Haring and doesn't have the space. The UC Museums said they would love to have it at the new UCSF Mission Bay campus, but someone else would need to pony up the actual cash first. (What kind of answer is that, UC? Can't one of those overpaid administrators buy it for you?)

Someone's gotta take this piece! Like one of the kids at the center says, "I like the chicken."
