The Political Reform Act (aka Gov. Code sections 8100091014) requires state and local public officials to make an annual public filing that discloses their personal assets and income. San Francisco officials who miss the spring deadlines to file the Statement of Economic Interest get fines and low-level shaming on the Ethics Commission website — here are the scofflaws from 2015 — and those who do file end up in Ethics' filings database, which is a lot of fun if you enjoy that kind of thing! I do, and so, it appears, does the Chron, which dutifully checked out this year's filings and learned that our elected officials are given many free things, as they must list all gifts worth more than $25. Let's look at the numbers, shall we?

It's good being mayor of San Francisco! Sure, there's lots of boring meetings, and you have to work on the weekends sometimes, but there are perks—perks like the over $95,000 of travel Ed Lee received last year.

According to the mayor's annual economic interest statement, of which Matier and Ross have helpfully blogged the high points, San Francisco's many "sister cities" covered trips to places like Paris ($21,986), China and South Korea ($22,292), and Bangalore ($19,837).

The sister city program, San Francisco's office of Economic and Workplace Development says, has "the potential to carry out the widest possible diversity of activities of any international program, including every type of municipal, business, professional, educational and cultural exchange or project."

That, or to send the mayor to places like Haifa, Israel ($3,546) for a symposium on emergency management and again to China (this time for $13,781) to participate in in the Wuhan International Friendly City Summit.

Lee also was the recipient of a number of gifts, M&R note, like a gift worth $1,363 from Cork, Ireland. The mayor also received numerous presents worth around $440 to help pay for his many trips, from folks as diverse as Mercedes Benz of San Francisco and, of course, Rose Pak.

Because sometimes a Whitman's Sampler won't do, IfOnly offers a modern twist on the old standby Valentine's Day box of chocolates. It's called Constellation Chocolate Collection. It's super chic. It's unabashedly artisan. And it costs $100, but with good reason: Alice Waters, Gary Danko, Michael Tusk, and 22 other award-winning chefs (from esteemed joints like State Bird Provisions, Benu, and Boulevard, just to name a few more) have come together to curate this sweet treat for you and your sweetie.

Further, your $100 (a whopping $45 of it) will go to Charity:Water, an organization that helps bring safe drinking water to in-need communities around the world.

This is a good deal, folks — especially for those of you who cannot afford dinner at one of the city's chronically lauded restaurants, much less nab a coveted reservation on the busiest dining night of the year. Order yours today. These boxes are limited. Very limited. Enjoy.

Perfect For That Hard-to-Shop-For Relative: This $40K Bordello/Art Project

What to gift that one intransigent person on your list who's already got everything or who simply hates everything and everyone?
Black Friday is on the way, and that means it's time for the familiar, creeping, awful realization that gift-giving is back on the agenda. But what to gift that one intransigent person on your list who's already got everything or who simply hates everything and everyone? How about a 1,100 square feet Victorian bordello?

Currently advertised on Craigslist for the low low cost of $40,000 (including breakdown and delivery within the Bay Area), the two-story structure was built almost entirely from salvaged materials by American Steel in West Oakland. Sided with old-growth redwood planks, framed and decked with old-growth Douglas fir, and outfitted with Victorian doors, two prodigious porches, trim, windows and light fixtures, the structure is kind of a steal. It's even wired with 17 electrical outlets and 3 sets of switches with dimmers. Dimmers!

Dubbed OakTown Hall, the house was a collaborative community project that took over 50 artists, builders and craftsmen to build. Unsurprisingly, it has made the trip to Burning Man. Financial considerations have placed it on the chopping block, but if you like it, you can contract that crew for something custom to fit your needs at roughly the same cost.

The catch? The structure is built to exist indoors, and won't be fit for outdoor installation without some modifications. But at 40-feet wide and 20-feet tall, the house really is the perfect gift for anyone with a large warehouse, flight hanger or spacious and painfully hip tech office to house it. And nothing will say happy anniversary, will you marry me, get well soon or merry Christmas quite like this. If interested, go ahead and contact Doug.

For Father's Day, new poppa Kanye West received a cool geek gift that would make any Mac zealot envious: a pair of old Apple mice autographed by co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve "Woz" Wozniak.
When Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom isn't returning our phone calls or emails, he's claiming $400 Louis Vuitton pens and $300 Bulgari ties on file forms for California's Fair Political Practices Commission. Why? Well, according to Bay Citizen, elected officials must do so in an effort the squash anything deemed a conflict of interest during their campaigns. And these gifts say a lot about said candidates. Or not. The Gav also claimed a luxury travel agent and "nearly $2,000 worth of tickets to the symphony, sporting events and the theater." Aw, the Getty life.

But what about other officials, you ask? Bay Citizen has more: State Sen. Leland Yee claimed "fresh flowers, meals and fresh fruit (particularly citrus)" on his form. He also claimed a $2 bag of peanuts. Attorney General Kamala Harris accepted "flowers and other celebratory gifts" as well as "a $300 watch from the consul general of Japan, and a $420 basketball game ticket from celebrity lawyer Blair Berk during her campaign."

You may have loudly professed your love for food trucks. You may tweet with the utmost convincing gravitas about Occupy SF. You may like to gnaw on a sourdough loaf while taking a tour of urban-tinged street art. You may be a bottle of Fernet. You may even be Herb Caen reincarnate. But you are not a true San Franciscan until you've sat through multiple screenings of The Joy Luck Club. With much respect for Amy Tan's book—an excellent read, by the way—the film version of her acclaimed novel about relationships between Chinese-American women and their Chinese mothers is quite possibly one of the best pieces of entertainment ever made.

And it's so very San Francisco. Why, it's got everything:

- A superb Tsai Chin bragging about her daughter around Chinatown

- An astounding Russian Hill apartment in which to mourn gorgeously next to a bevy of bay windows

- Mahjong

- W-a-a-a-verly Jong ("Joon, we decided to go in another direction. Your drawings weren't sophisticated enough")

- A modern Potrero Hill pad with a dick husband who makes you split the cost of ice cream

- Chocolate peanut butter pie

- A noteworthy piano teacher ("Z Major!")

- "My son says he's planted enough seeds in you to fill a basket"

- Worst quality crab

- Best quality heart

- Andrew McCarthy

While it might be too late to order on Amazon in time for Christmas, it should be readily available at your nearest Target or Best Buy. Below: One of the most memorable scenes from The Joy Luck Club. Best quality, indeed.

This contributor is admittedly gift-buying challenged, but local gift purveyors, Misha SF (1428 Polk), make it super easy for us to make discerning purchases. Their Polk Street storefront is chock-full of quirkily fun yet functional items that won't break our wallet.

For instance, who wouldn't love this fab cup created by Japanese designer Yusuke Fujinuma, which doubles as a diamond ring? The mug is made out of white porcelain, the handle is available in gold or platinum, and the gem is made of clear sparkling Swarovski crystal, for the truly upscale hot beverage enthusiast.

And how cool is that box? First the recipient will think you're proposing to them, and then, for better or worse, "gotcha!," it's just a really clever and fashionable mug.

To quote Fred and Friends, the cup's manufacturer, "ooh la latte!"

These Are Things Makes Map Of San Francisco

Jen and Omar from These Are Things, a mapmaking design team in Columbus, Ohio, just finished working on a map of San Francisco.
