Need an afternoon bump? Head over to your nearest Starbuck's for a cup of coffee, provided to you free of charge if you bring in your own reusable coffe mug. You even have your choice of hot or iced -- the latter if you're a true coastal California brat. "They ran the same promotion last year and saved over a million disposable cups," repots Eater. Earth Day Reminders: Drains to the Bay, Sacrifice
Oakland Geology has a wildly helpful reminder today in honor of Earth Day, regarding what drains to the bay. OG writes:
SFist This Weekend
It's the 40th anniversary of Earth Day this weekend. We were going to direct you to the Earth Day website for an exhaustive list of local events specific to Saturday and Sunday, but we guess that's too much to ask -- all sorts of dates are included. FunCheapSF has highlights though.
“Party for the Planet” at SF Zoo Tomorrow, Free Admission for E-Waste Recyclers
We can always rely on funcheapSF! In celebration of Earth Day, the San Francisco Zoo will be having a “Party for the Planet” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, which includes a self-guided scavenger hunt, green-themed music and puppet performances, and a sneak preview of Disneynature's Earth. Attendees bicycling to the event will receive $2 off admission, and those who drive and recycle their electronics at the event's e-waste collection site on Herbst Road from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. will receive one free admission per car.
Screw the Earth, Win $500 In Gas Money
Perfect for celebrating Earth Day, Citizen Sugar is offering one lucky winner $500 in gas relief. ("Gas relief." Har.) All you have to do is register and take a brief quiz (e.g., "how much does it cost to fill up a 2008 Hummer 2 [H2]?"), and then you'll be be entered in lottery. And if you win, you'll can temporarily stop whining about the price of gas these days.
Nothing Says "Guilt" Like "Earth Day"
Since you've already figured out your plans for tomorrow night, what about during the day? It is Earth Day tomorrow and everyone is displacing their guilt celebrating by participating in cleanups and events around the bay. Upcoming and Going listed some of the Earth Day events and we're helpfully listing them here in hopes that we'll encourage you to get off your couch and do something useful.
SFist Tonight
Whether you're expecting a tax refund or if you had to cough up a pocket-full of dough to the IRS, we've compiled a list of things to do in the city on a budget, all for the cost of a movie – or less!
Good Dance vs. Bad Dance
Next time someone asks you what you're doing to save the Earth, you'll have an answer: This Earth Day Eve (Saturday, the 21st, tomorrow) from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, join a crowd of like-minded weirdos for Flash Dance 7 at the 24th St Bart plaza. Event organizer Amandeep Jawa is asking that you demonstrate your Earth-Day-Eveishness by wearing blue or green, unless you hate ecology, in which case you can dress in soot-grey and smoke while twirling your wealthy industrialist mustache. We heartily endorse the Flash Dance experience: its relatively modest aspirations (chiefly, having fun) are unassailable.
SchwarzenWatcher Pimps His Ride
The Governator continues to go where no Governor has gone before and will go on MTV's "Pimp My Ride" to pimp his ride. Actually, several other Governors have appeared on reality shows before. Michigan's Governor Jennifer Granholm tried out for "America's Next Top Model" and former Governor George Allen is all set to appear on the new reality show "I Swear I'm Not a Racist" along with Don Imus and Michael Richards.
SFist Reviews Kasper Hauser/Elephant Larry
It's a little intimidating stepping up into the batter's box to do any sort of Sketchfest review in light of recent SFist events. Last thing we'd want is to get nasty comments back by celebrities. So, with all that in mind, we're just going to get the negative stuff out of the way with our Kasper Hauser/Elephant Larry review first so we could spend the rest of the review manning the trenches. And that is this-- we thought the opening act, Elephant Larry was better.
And It Burns, Burns, Burns, the Ring of Fire, the Ring of Fire
When we last left the bonfire debate at Ocean Beach, it was looking like there was going to be a crack down. Considering we have friends who went down to the beach over the weekend to burn some Christmas trees, we don't think anything has happened as of yet. Well, it looks like a compromise is set to take place as officials are in talks with "bonfire advocates" to build about twenty fire rings where bonfires could be held.
More Spin from Bush

After making more flip-flops than an Indonesian child-labor sweatshop, the Environmentalist-in-Chief finally decided to spend his Earth Day Eve and morning at Dick Cheney's favorite disclosed location, Meadowood Resort in St. Helena. Although nobody's exactly sure why W made the last-minute call to go Napa, mountain biking might have had something to do with it.
The perpetually well rested Bush spent Friday night in one of Meadowood's $4,000 a night suites, then motorcaded over to Las Posadas State Forest in Angwin Saturday morning for a 65-minute mountain bike ride of unreported distance.
The ride, which Bush made with his SS entourage, the vaunted Travis Air Force Base cycling team, and AP writer Scott Lindlaw, was part of a carefully scripted Earth Day itinerary meant to highlight Bush's concern for the environment and sustainable fuels. Unfortunately for the Earth and everyone who lives on it, Bush is more Soylent Green than Greenpeace.
SFist Cares ... About the Earth
Last week, we talked about Ultimate Recycling. Today, we want to remind you about Regular Recycling. Because tomorrow is Earth Day.
