The medical examiner's report was first reported by People Magazine.

Jones was reportedly found unresponsive in a hallway at the Fairmont by arriving police and fire department personnel at 2:52 am on January 1. Dispatch audio that was earlier obtained by People included the phrase "Code 3 for overdose, color change," which likely referred to a blue or purple discoloration of the lips and skin that is associated with low oxygen levels in the blood.

The manner of death was ruled an "accident."

It's unclear if Jones was staying at the hotel alone, or if she was first found by a stranger in the hotel hallway.

Within hours of the death, local media was learning that this was the daughter of Oscar-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones. Victoria was the daughter of Jones and his second wife Kimberlea Cloughley, who were together until 1996, and the couple also has a son, 43-year-old Austin Jones.

It appears that Victoria Jones had been living in the Bay Area, possibly in Napa County where she had multiple arrests on her record, including a drug possession charge from May 2025, and a case involving alleged domestic violence and elder abuse from June 2025. The latter occurred at the Carneros Resort and Spa.

(L-R) Victoria Jones, Tommy Lee Jones, Dawn Laurel-Jones and Hilary Swank attend "The Homesman" premiere during the 67th Annual Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2014 in Cannes, France.
The mysterious deaths of two people and two cats in a Berkeley apartment in January have been determined to have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, however the source of that carbon monoxide has yet to be determined, as the Chronicle reported earlier this week. Now, Susan Hanna, the mother of one of the victims, Roger Morash, has filed suit in Alameda County Superior Court that landlords and building owners Cindy M. Kwong and Tony M. Wong were negligent by not installing a carbon monoxide detector near the couple’s sleeping quarters, as is required by state law.

As KRON 4 reports, the suit is seeking unspecified general damages, as well as medical and burial expenses.

35-year-old Roger Morash and 32-year-old Valerie Morash were a couple who'd been married nine years after meeting while they were both students at MIT. By all accounts they were both the sort of highly educated and industrious academics that one finds on many blocks of Berkeley's neighborhoods, he the founder of a video game company with a master's degree in electrical engineering, she with multiple degrees, including master's degrees in electrical engineering and statistics, and a doctorate in psychology from UC Berkeley. Most recently, as the Chronicle reports, she had been doing pioneering work in haptic perception among blind children, rethinking earlier studies that were conducted less scientifically of children learning Braille and having "constructed her own machine to capture finger movements and convert those movements into differential equations."

Early into the investigation into their deaths, which happened in the apartment they'd shared for most of the last decade in a four-unit building at 3028 Deakin Street, authorities honed in on a 3-D printer and a laser cutter, but both were ruled not to have been the culprit in the couple's poisoning — neither was powered on at the time.

The poisoning happened one night during a storm, so presumably all the windows were shut, however all the usual suspects in carbon monoxide poisonings like heaters, stovetops, cars in the driveway have been ruled out as well. Furthermore, no carbon monoxide was detected in the unit when hazardous materials crews arrived the day the Morashes' bodies were found.

Both were found on the second floor of the unit in separate rooms, and the only carbon monoxide detector was on the first floor, according to the Chronicle and Ms. Hanna's suit.

Expecting that legal proceedings would be likely, the landlords transferred the building along with a dozen others they own in Oakland to a limited liability corporation a few weeks after the deaths, probably hoping to shield their other assets from litigation, per the Chron. So far, Kwong and Wong have not commented publicly on the case.

City inspectors have cleared the other units in the building as habitable, however, and this may be concerning from a public health perspective. After ordering that carbon monoxide detectors be installed outside the bedrooms of the other units, as has been required by law since 2011, residents in those units have been allowed to stay. But as UC Davis professor of internal medicine Dr. Timothy Albertson tells the Chronicle, "All these events are considered public health issues until they’re solved and hopefully prevented in the future, so an unknown cause like this would be a significant public health issue in the city of Berkeley."

A 39-year-old member of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus collapsed in the middle of a performance Friday evening at the Herbst Theatre, and despite efforts to revive him, he died. Ryan Nunez had been a member of the chorus for a number of years and worked on staff as the group's Administrative Coordinator since 2014, as KRON 4 reports. Tim Seeling, artistic director and conductor of the chorus, posted to Facebook about the tragedy Saturday morning (see below), explaining that chorus members performed CPR for an hour on the risers onstage while the audience waited, during intermission, until he was pronounced dead by paramedics. "They had been unable to move him from the stage, so he died on the spot where he had sung the first half," Seeling wrote.

The group canceled the remainder of the performance, this season's dubbed "Paradise Found," but returned to do the final two performances of this series on Saturday, in Nunez's honor, as the Chronicle reported.

Writing on Saturday, Seeling said, "I have not experienced such shock or soul-shattering grief as that. Ever. The process will continue today as we sing two more concerts — all about paradise — on the very spot where Ryan left us. A task that right now seems completely impossible to do. We are all grasping for solace."

The group held a private memorial just before their Saturday afternoon concert.

In a statement, the SFGMC wrote "We have suffered one of the most profound tragedies and losses one can imagine. He was our voice to the world. Filled with humor and huge hugs for all — he just took care of everyone." Also, they said, "No one loved SFGMC more than Ryan. It literally changed his life — as knowing him has changed all of ours."

Members of the SFGMC often refer to it as their second family, and that tightness was in evidence just a few months ago when we learned that one member had received a life-saving liver transplant thanks to the generosity of another.

In the first case of a death by a cable car collision in nearly a decade, a 93-year-old man who was struck by a cable car Sunday afternoon has died from his injuries. As KRON 4 reports, the incident occurred at 3:10 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Mason and Filbert Streets on Russian Hill, and the man died early Monday. His identity has not been released pending family notification.

The cable car, on the Powell-Mason line, was traveling southbound at the time, knocking the man to the ground. According to the Chronicle, the man was walking in a marked crosswalk, and service on the line was shut down for about 80 minutes, resuming at 4:26 p.m.

SFMTA director Edward D. Reiskin issued a statement saying, "Speaking for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, I express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the individual who was fatally struck by a cable car at Mason and Filbert. The SFMTA will continue to work with the San Francisco Police Department as we undertake all necessary investigations into this matter."

This is the first incident of a fatality in a cable car accident since 2008, the Chronicle notes, when an elderly woman was struck along the same line at the intersection of Mason and Broadway and died the following day.

According to the Associated Press in an investigative piece in 2013, injuries related to SF's cable cars occur on average about once a month, with over 150 occurring over the previous decade. The cable cars "routinely rank among the most accident-prone mass transportation modes in the country per vehicle mile traveled annually," and resulted in the city having to pay upwards of $8 million to settle about four dozen cable-car-related legal claims.

Sheryl Sandberg's Husband Dave Goldberg Died In Treadmill Accident

He appears to have fallen and suffered severe head trauma while exercising.

SF News

david goldberg

deaths

facebook

obituaries

Sheryl Sandberg

Jay Barmann

The sudden death last week of SurveyMonkey CEO and husband of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, David Goldberg, was shrouded in a bit of mystery. But as of late yesterday news outlets were reporting that Goldberg had been found unconscious, and with severe head trauma, in the gym at the Four Seasons Punta Mita resort outside Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A Mexican state official confirmed for the Associated Press that Goldberg "left his room at about 4 p.m. to exercise, and family members went to look for him after he didn't return. He was found at about 6:30 p.m. in a gymnasium lying by a treadmill in a pool of blood, with a blow to the lower back of his head."

He later died of his injuries at a hospital in Nuevo Vallarta.

Sandberg and Goldberg's family had checked into the resort on Thursday, April 30, and the accident occurred on Friday afternoon.

Weirdly, though perhaps for legal reasons, the Four Seasons issued an official statement saying that "the incident did not happen on any of its properties and that David Goldberg was not registered as a guest in any of the rooms, villas or residences."

As KQED reports, family and friends are gathering today at Stanford University for a private memorial. In keeping with Goldberg's hatred of ties, all male guests have been asked not to wear ties.

Also, President Barack Obama is among those paying tribute to Goldberg, on Facebook, in this time of mourning.
Paul Getty, was found dead in his Hollywood Hills home yesterday of apparently accidental, or self-inflicted, causes. His death is just the latest in a string of tragedies to beset the wealthy family, and Ann and Gordon Getty have asked for privacy during "this extremely difficult time."

Getty was found, as the LA Times reports, by a female friend Tuesday afternoon "naked from the waist down in the bathroom of his Hollywood Hills estate Tuesday and appeared to have suffered from some type of blunt-force trauma."

Foul play is not suspected and the woman was not implicated in the death, though police say it is still "very, very early in the investigation." The likely scenario sounded like some kind of fall, however TMZ came up with conflicting details about "significant bleeding" in the rectal area, and a call about cardiac arrest.

TMZ is also reporting that the same ex-girlfriend who found Getty's body had a restraining order against her, taken out by Getty just two weeks ago, and that he had a "serious medical condition" exacerbated by stress, which was brought on by confrontations with the ex.

Andrew Getty was an old pal of Lieutenant Governor and former SF mayor Gavin Newsom, and Gordon Getty was an important initial investor in most of Newsom's early ventures, including The PlumpJack Group, which is actually named for an opera that the elder Getty wrote.

And, sadly, the Getty family is no stranger to tragedy. J. Paul Getty's fifth son died of a brain tumor in 1958 at the age of 12, and another son died of an apparent suicide in 1973. Also, Andrew Getty's cousin, J. Paul Getty III (father of actor Balthazar Getty), was kidnapped for ransom in Italy for four months in 1973, at the age of 16, and released only after the kidnappers severed his right ear and sent it to his parents — who in turn paid a $2.8 million ransom. He then suffered an incapacitating stroke in the 1980s, and died at age 54 in 2011 after a long illness.

Cyclist Killed In 2013 SoMa Collision With Truck Being Blamed For Wearing Earbuds

On August 14, 2013, 24-year-old Amelie Le Moullac was cycling through SoMa when she was killed in a collision with a semi truck making a right turn at Folsom and Sixth Streets.

SF News

Amelie Le Moullac

bicycles

cycling death

cyclist

cyclist safety

deaths

soma

Jay Barmann

On August 14, 2013, 24-year-old Amelie Le Moullac was cycling through SoMa when she was killed in a collision with a semi truck at Folsom and Sixth Street. A wrongful death trial began last week, naming both the truck driver and the company he worked for, Daylight Foods of Milpitas, and as KQED reminds us, we have the SF Bicycle Coalition to thank for the fact that the SFPD didn't blame Le Moullac for her own death.

As the SF Bay Guardian originally reported, the SFPD failed to seek out surveillance footage of the collision, which clearly showed that the driver, Gilberto Alcantar, entering the bike lane as he turned right onto Sixth Street from Folsom, hitting Le Moullac.

The attorney arguing on behalf of Le Moullac's family said in opening arguments that she was "following all the rules of the road" on her way to Caltrain that morning, and Alcantar was at fault.

Defense attorneys are arguing that Le Moullac had headphones in at the time, a set of white earbuds to be exact, which can be seen tangled in her helmet in evidence photos. They're also arguing that she was traveling twice as fast and should have gone around to the left of Alcantar's truck when she saw him signal.

Le Moullac's case was one of the more dramatic and publicized cases of cyclists being killed in SF last year. Two months later, at Bryant and Division Streets, a 78-year-old man was killed in a collision with a Muni bus.

The first official earthquake-related death has just been reported as the Napa County Sheriff's Department confirms the passing of 65-year-old Laurie Anne Thompson, who was struck in the head when her television fell on her during the August 24 quake. Thompson did not go to the hospital until the following day when she was experiencing dizziness and "a decline in mental function," as AP is reporting. Thompson then died on Friday, September 5 of an intracranial hemorrhage.

Prior to the report of Thompson's demise, the only other serious reports were of 13-year-old Nicholas Dillon, who had a serious pelvic injury after a chimney collapsed on him (he is recovering from his injuries), and a 31-year-old woman, Leigh McDermott, who died of a heart attack during or shortly after the quake and whose death was ruled to be not quake-related.

Thomson's children, Aaron and Shannon Thompson, are urging the public "to seek immediate medical attention for any relative who has suffered a head injury, even if the injury appears insignificant," as the Napa Valley Register reports.

The 6.0 earthquake caused at least 200 injuries, and what's being estimated as at least $500 million in damages.

Two women have turned up dead around Mt. Tamalpais in less than a week. Most recently, 50-year-old Marie Sanner of Mill Valley was found inside a drainage ditch Thursday evening after her father called to report her missing. Meanwhile, 33-year-old Magdalena Glinkowski was missing for nearly two weeks before her body was found near a trailhead parking lot.

Here's what we know so far: Sanner went out on a hike with a friend and her dog after dark on Wednesday, NBC Bay Area reports. At some point the two separated, so Sanner headed back to her car parked near Mountain Home Inn. The Marin County Sheriff’s office did not know why the two split up, but the dog did make it back to the car. Sanner did not. Her body was found on Thursday.

Glinkowski, who hailed from Menlo Park, was reported missing on March 30. Her body was found near the parking lot for the Bootjack trail on April 12. According to the sheriff's depart, there were no signs of trauma, but they have yet to get back the toxicology results.

At this point, authorities do not believe the two deaths to be related.

This morning San Francisco streets played host to another driver-related pedestrian death. At Van Ness and Pacific around 1 a.m., a man driving a a silver 2009 Toyota allegedly struck and killed an unidentified man crossing the street.

The driver then tried to flee the scene by foot. According to the Chron, "Officers saw a man who witnesses identified as the driver walking away west on Pacific and arrested him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run, police said. His name has not been released."

Pedestrian death numbers have jumped over the last few years. As the Chron goes on to point out, "21 pedestrians were killed, with six in December alone, making it the deadliest year since 2007." Why is this happening? According to former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, it's due to the city's lack of freeways.

We have only ourselves to blame for San Francisco’s increasingly unsafe streets.

We tore down the Central and Embarcadero freeways and in the process dumped thousands of additional cars onto the already crowded streets, many driving at nearly the same speed they did on the freeways.

We encouraged more people to ride bicycles, then all but exempted them from following traffic rules.

We brought thousands of pedestrians into downtown, then allowed them to jaywalk at will, often with their heads buried in their latest mobile devices.

We tell the cops to write more tickets, then when they do, some supervisor accuses them of racial profiling or picking on the poor.

And now, in the name of tech, we’re allowing hundreds of ride-share gypsy cabs onto the streets without commercial driver’s licenses.

Also, because this should be pointed out, Brown has taken up getting into cabs and (dangerously) chasing after cyclists. (Read all about it.)

Streetsblog, however, notes that reckless driving is also to blame. In fact, it takes most of the blame.

Ten years after Brown left office, even the SFPD is re-shaping its policies around what its data shows — that the vast majority of pedestrian injuries are caused by reckless driving. Not that we should expect data to be relevant to a man who seems to base his transportation and street safety views on no data or empirical evidence whatsoever.

Fatality On The Tracks At BART El Cerrito Del Norte

Service resumed to normal this morning after a three-hour delay as police investigated a death on the tracks at the El Cerrito del Norte station.

SF News

BART

deaths

east bay

El Cerrito

public transit

Brock Keeling

Service resumed to normal this morning after a three-hour delay as police investigated a death on the tracks at the El Cerrito del Norte BART station.

"The pedestrian, 62-year-old Han Cheng Li, was hit by a white van at about 11:35 p.m.," notes SF Appeal. "He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with a major head injury and died several hours later."

Although the incident remains under investigation, the driver of the car, a man in his fifties, remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

And now you can find out whether someone died long ago in your charming Victorian, and what their name was, via DiedInHouse.com.

For a mere $11.99, you can find out whether someone was murdered, or committed suicide, or otherwise croaked in your bedroom. And this might be especially helpful for people looking to buy a house, just to have some peace of mind that nothing violent or traumatic occurred there — because real estate brokers aren't always going to want to tell you, and they aren't necessarily required to do so. (Deaths on a property only have to be disclosed under California law if they happened in the last three years prior to a sale.)

So, yes, if there was a grisly mass murder, or just a sad, prolonged decline by an elderly person who now haunts your attic, you can find out for yourself with a few clicks! God bless the internet.
