With Bay Area traffic at peak awful, and BART totally shot for the foreseeable future, commuters are spending more and more time stuck in traffic. Enter Javonne Hatfield, the 23-year-old San Francisco resident who KQED reports has been dancing for cars atop the 101 overpass at 18th Street off and on for the past two-and-a-half years.

“I always felt that there was this was unspoken power that comes over me when I participate in any kind of dance,” Hatfield told KQED. “I would always get this very special feeling and think ‘This is for me.'”

Hatfield told the publication that following the death of his mother, he was going through a tough time in his life and found that dancing and making drivers smile was a way for him to focus his negative thoughts into something positive.

"This particular location is like a gateway in and out of San Francisco,” he furthered. "I believe what you put out is what you get back. So, I try to just give out good, give out good.” Drivers, it seems, appreciated the good vibes.

"I drive this commute, I’ve been driving this commute for close to 15 plus years,” Patricia Douglas told KALW late last year. “For the past couple of years, I’ve seen JaVonne on the freeway, just dancing with his heart, having a good old time.”

According to KALW, Hatfield's a big fan of Drake, Rudimental, Erykah Badu, and Sam Smith.

“The way that I'd describe it is like, I'm here but I'm not,” he explained to KALW. “Like, I know physically I'm here dancing in the moment, but when I'm doing it it's like I'm almost in a nirvana of it's own. The energy I feel from other people is what I go off of, and the more I dance the more energy there is.”

"Dancing is my gateway between heaven and hell" says one of the subjects of Youth Radio's "Turf Dancing From Street to Subway" video report, which details a group of dancers who seek to entertain BART riders during their commute.

While subway performers are old hat to folks from other cities, you don't often see them on BART. But these dancers seek to change that, with their “BART street show,” a donation-funded business that floats (they hope) just under BART's performance-inhibiting radar.

Youth Radio producer Luis Flores tells the Ex, "The main thing was that they're sort of misunderstood as to why they're performing on these trains,,,Dancing is a form of positive expression for them, like they say in the video. It's not just about the money."

After learning her 11-year-old daughter was twerking at a middle school dance, Frances Hena of lovely Bakersfield, California did what any mother would do: made her kid stand at a busy intersection with a sign reading, "I was disrespecting my parents by twerking at my school dance."

Hena says she forbid her daughter from doing the now-infamous dance craze at the middle school function, but her daughter didn't listen. "That's ridiculous to even think that's okay at a school dance," Hena told the local ABC affiliate. "When she's 18, she can do whatever she wants. As of right now, that's not something she's going to be doing."

When a friend told Hena about her daughter's butt-shaking routine, Hena went the public-shaming route. But the poster board pillory didn't end there. KTVU reports:

Hena took things one step further by calling up a local news station to let it know where and when they could find her daughter during her public shaming. The TV station obliged and showed up to cover the girl's punishment for its daily newscast.

Sure enough, 23ABC Bakersfield was there to cover the public shaming and post it to YouTube:

As for whether or not the stunt went too far, Hena tells 23ABC: "Every parenting is different. I mean, what am I supposed to do? Whoop her and get the cops called on me? ... I'm embarrassed myself for having her twerk at a school dance."

The Giants may have lost 1-6 to Colorado, but, in our eyes, Pence and Pablo did the boxstep right into the playoffs of our hearts.

In this video she details her journey from rookie to formidable dancer and the time it took, culminating in a dramatic BART finale.

In Dance In A Year Karen writes:

People who watch me dance today sometimes assume I've been dancing for many years. I made this video so you could see the awkward body that started just one year ago.

Here's my secret: I practiced everywhere. At bus stops. In line at the grocery store. At work — Using the mouse with my right hand and practicing drills with my left hand. You don't have to train hardcore for years to become a dancer. But you must be willing to practice and you better be hungry.

This isn't a story about dancing, though. It's about having a dream and not knowing how to get there [...]

WIth a meme-ridden theme of "Harlem Shake" this year, the 35h Carnaval, one of the remaining remnants of the old Mission, still stands as the city's most bombastic annual parades, featuring music and cultural elements from Latin American and Caribbean traditions.

Have you ever yearned to see a California sea lion groove to "Everybody" by the Backstreet Boys? Well, want no more. Ronan, a 4-year-old sea lion rescued from Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo in 2009, lives at the Pinniped Cognition & Sensory Systems Laboratory at UCSC's Long Marine Laboratory. And she doesn't just live, you see. She jams.

Wired has more:

... [UC Santa Cruz] graduate student Peter Cook trained her, beginning with a simple, repeating sound, like a metronome. When Ronan bobbed her head in time with the sound she earned a fish. Eventually she graduated to more complex tunes, and she’s now able to spontaneously bop to tracks she hasn’t heard before.

Behold:

Super Bowl halftime shows make Rob Lowe and Snow White's infamous 1988 Oscar performance look like "Rose's Turn" from Gypsy. And you think that reference is gay, you should see the following Super Bowl halftime shows. They're divine and everything sporting events should be, but, alas, are not.

5. Date: 1982
Location: Pontiac Silverdome (Pontiac, Michigan)
Theme: Salute to the 1960s and Motown
Performers: Up with People

They don't make halftime shows like this anymore, sadly. Up With People (right-wing music group/sect) made numerous appearances at Super Bowl halftime shows -- four of them, to be exact. This particular one, a jarring mixture of terror and smiles, features UWP bopping and hopping along to hits of the '60s. The spectacle culminates into a rendition of Let the Sunshine In, complete with a Fosse-like blob of arms, shuffling feet and movement. A fitting performance that pairs nicely with football's equality cultish and scary fan base.

4. Date: 1977
Location: Rose Bowl (Pasadena, California)
Theme: It's a Small World
Performers: The Moustekeers, Los Angeles Unified All-City Band, audience card stunt

Aside form the fact that this halftime show involves Mickey Mouse and Moustekeers working it (check out a brief appearance by Blair form The Facts of Life around the 5:30 mark), the decision to shoot almost the entirety of the halftime show from a distance is groundbreaking. So close and yet still so far away from the viewer, the mere mortal.

3. 1992
Location: Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (Minneapolis, Minnesota)
Theme: Winter Magic and salute to 1992 Winter Olympics
Performers: Gloria Estefan with Olympic Figure skaters Brian Boitano & Dorothy Hamill

What would Brian Boitano do? Figure skate at the Super Bowl. The man has balls, folks. When SFist asked Boitano to tells us about the show, he said, "I think the Chronicle voted it one of the 10 worst half time shows! That was hilarious. But It was not easy because [I had to figure skate] on small plastic ice."

Also, the majority of the show is a tribute to Christmas. Don't most Super Bowls happen in February? Don't answer that.

2. Date: 2004
Location: Reliant Stadium (Houston, Texas)
Theme: Rock the Vote
Performers: Janet Jackson (and Justin Timberlake)

Janet's career faltered after the excruciatingly named "nipplegate," while Justin Timberlake (the male Anne Hathaway) did little to support for the legendary Ms. Jackson during her time of need. So we're giving Janet's nipple reveal the No. 2. It's all for you, Janet.

1. Date: 1996
Location: Sun Devil Stadium (Tempe, Arizona)
Theme: Take Me Higher: A Celebration of 30 Years of the Super Bowl
Performer: Miss Diana Ross

DIANA ROSS IN A HELICOPTER. Look, everything about this performance is nothing short of brilliance. From Miss Ross' welcoming statement ("We're going to take you higher at the super, super Super Bowl!") to the pyrotechnics to the hair in her face to the dancers. But the crowning touch is when, at the end of the song-and-dance spectacle, Diana is whisked away in a helicopter.

This has been making the rounds today, and it's kind of an amazing cleanser for your palate. Someone only needed to slow down the Daft Punk track ("Around the World") just slightly to get it to synch perfectly with this vintage video of three guys doing the Charleston. For those out there who don't appreciate dance history, the Charleston is a dance step popularized in the early 1920s, and though the video labels this as Charleston, it could arguably be a later style that developed out of the Charleston, since this was probably shot in the 1950s. No? Well, neither do we. We weren't born then. However, what with the resurgence of all things non-hippie '60s (due in large part to Mad Men), it's high time you checked out "1964" at Edinburgh Castle.

Happening on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, "1964" is billed as the longest-running '60s club in San Francisco. A for the music? SF Weekly notes, "the Shirelles, the Sapphires, the Poppies, and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas abound. Whether you're tragically hip or completely clueless, once you've tried the handy selection of whiskeys and taken in the sounds, there's no way you won't be dancing with a smile on your face."

S.F. sure loves a flash mob -- especially one involving Michael Jackson, on the King of Pop's birthday (yesterday). And even if we find the flash-mob thing a little yawn-inducing at this point, we are jaded and you don't have to listen to us. We'll try to be more encouraging. Such joy! Such presumed spontaneity! It's a wonder to behold! Anyway, we especially like the girl at the 0:28 mark in the pink tank top who decides to join in the fun, even though she clearly did not have her marching orders or know any of the choreography. That, friends, is a big flash-mob no-no.
Muni Diaries alerts us to this very important video: three women doing interpretive dance on a Richmond bound BART train. Fun! And fluid! But... would a little Michael Bennett now and then kill anyone? We think not. We really think not. Anyway, enjoy.

In related BART choreography news, Mission Mission has a delightful GIF of a gentleman passenger's fresh moves on a train recently. The dude performed all the way from MacArthur to the 24th Street station.
