Yesterday, AdBusters, the Vancouver-based anti-consumerism organization credited with starting the push to occupy public spaces around the country, sent out the latest of it's "Tactical Briefing" emails to supporters of the movement. After calling the recent camp-clearings in Oakland, New York and elsewhere the movement's "existential moment", the directive from the Adbusters mothership lays out the suggested next steps for a group that seems to be losing sight of its original intentions.
Prepare Yourselves for More Flashmobs
Sigh: 'Thriller' Flash Mob Invades Ferry Plaza, Dolores Park
S.F. sure loves a flash mob -- especially one involving Michael Jackson, on the King of Pop's birthday (yesterday). And even if we find the flash-mob thing a little yawn-inducing at this point, we are jaded and you don't have to listen to us. We'll try to be more encouraging. Such joy! Such presumed spontaneity! It's a wonder to behold! Anyway, we especially like the girl at the 0:28 mark in the pink tank top who decides to join in the fun, even though she clearly did not have her marching orders or know any of the choreography. That, friends, is a big flash-mob no-no.
Michael Jackson Flash Mob Set to Collide With Pride
Pride isn't the only celebration this weekend: a group of (presumably not Pride-related) flash mobbers will be commemorating the 2nd anniversary of Michael Jackson's death with a series of Thriller dances across town tomorrow afternoon.
Flash Mob to Annoy/Delight Union Square Shoppers Today
S.F. loves a good flash mob (don't you? we don't) and today a mob of several hundred, if not more, are expected to irritate and confuse Union Square tourists around noon. The event is called One Dance, they've been doing it for a couple of years, and it kicks off National Dance Week. Participants are asked to "perform" a three-minute "choreographed dance piece" between noon and 1 p.m., on the Square. The coming week will also feature over 400 free dance events around the Bay Area.
When Flash Mobs Go Wrong: Choral Mob in Roseville Almost Breaks Mall
It's Christmastime, and now that your grandmother and maiden aunt are on Twitter, choral flash mobs are the new big thing! Hundreds of people gathered "spontaneously" at malls in Orlando, Dallas, and Kansas City over the weekend to sing a rousing "Hallelujuah Chorus" en masse, much to the delight of the elderly and local news broadcasters the nation over. But when a similar gathering tried to happen up in Roseville last night -- following weeks of reminders by local church groups, choral groups, etc, on Twitter -- at the Westfield Galleria food court, way too many eager singers showed up, and suddenly the flash mob started to feel like an actual mob, and the mall had to be evacuated.
Photos: Last Night's Michael Jackson Flash Party
Steve Rhodes was on the scene at last night's Michael Jackson Tribute/Flashdance Flash Mob at Justin Herman Plaza. We hear it lasted for six hours. We're surprised there weren't any zombies. Check out SF Appeal for video footage and links to more photos of the event.
