In a depressing twist of fate, a cougar (the mountain lion kind) was struck by a Cougar (the Mercury kind) on Monday morning on a stretch of Highway 280 going through Los Altos. The Cougar suffered some front-end damage, but the real cougar was killed.

CHP Officer Ron Simmons told Patch that although the driver left the scene before help arrived, they did the right thing: “Because there isn’t another person involved, they were not required to stop. But this person stopped, called us—important because the mountain lion was initially blocking a lane.”

Encounters between cougars and humans are most frequent during late spring and summer, when juvenile cougars leave their mothers and search for new territory. No word on who was behind the wheel and what their gender/age/dating status is.

Scene from last week's Cougar Run, where women of-a-certain age (i.e., 35 or older) biked around the Mission with little to no shame.
