Ask SFist -- Cougar Age Limit?

ask%20sfists%20image.jpg

After a recent discussion about sex with those in the coveted 18-to-25-year-old age bracket, a friend then asked SFist:

How old to you have to be to be a cougar?

Huh. Honestly, we didn't have a clue. Do you? We'd love to hear what age one has to hit in order to be considered cougar-worthy. Specifically, we want to hear what age all of you male readers consider cougar time, and at what age our female readers think that they have to reach in order to qualify for cougar admission.

Go.

Agreed. 35 came to mind first.

wow, i was way off. i thought that it was in the mid to late forties range.

See, Brock, I told you! Never defy me again.

35!? What is this- Logan's Run? I'll second Brock's vote...

Coming from a 35 yr. old woman - cougars are definitely over 40.

I think cougar might be a state of mind.

I am only 24 but felt kind of dirty schtupping a 19 year old college boy.

Maybe cougarness is relative to having a 401k.

I would say 40, but could go as low as 35 depending on the cougarishness of the specific situation.

I think it's a combo of state of mind and state of affairs - I 2nd both everydaycaitlin & agirlsgirl.

As a 25 year old male, I'd say that 35 marks the onset to cougardom. We have mid-30-somethings in my office building, and their looks often feel a little predatory.

If one of my female friends goes out with a 35 year-old, I'd see it as "dating an older man", which I think of as roughly equivalent.

So, 35.

Maybe it depends on the age of the prey...If they are 20, a woman is a cougar at 35 but if they are 25, a woman is a cougar 40?

A couple of other factors:

Residence in Mill Valley crucially lowers the age requirement. Basically, Mill Valley women go from teenager directly to cougar. There seems to be no transitional stage.

Closet audit may have to be performed to accurately guage your own cougarishness. Three or more animal print items and I'm sorry, you're cougarry.

@rubylovesnorman, I had the same thought: 15 year age difference.

Oh, this one is easy: The age at which a woman can properly be called a Cougar is always my age plus 10 years. So, 41 - at least until February when it will officially go up to 42.

By the way, but I read somewhere that the male equivalent is "Manther." Though some might argue its just "man."

The male equivalent isn't a direct female to male translation. The male eqivalent dresses in the habitat of the cougar not the skin of the cougar. So he shops at Tommy Bahama and wears a lot of tropical prints. He seeks girls gone wild types in their early twenties. I don't have a name for him other than turd.

Coveted? When I was 18-25, I had pretty much no idea how to use my dick.

"Basically, Mill Valley women go from teenager directly to cougar."

OK, that made me LOL. Also true of a few suburbs of Chicago (my hometown).

Well, ya'll know what opinions are like. Here's what I think:

- 10 - 15 year age difference between cougar and prey, most cougar-ing doesn't start until after 40.
- It's a good probability that a cougar lives in Mill Valley but could also have a condo in Rincon Hill or Palo Alto, maybe North Beach, but only on a really good street and away from Chinatown.
- There is a good change a cougar is already experienced in the ways of marriage, at least once, maybe twice.
- A cougar has cash money and is willing to spread a little around to get what she wants.
- Cougar prey is cute, fit and works as a bartender or some entry-level job at Wells Fargo. There is a good chance he's not a winner on Jeopardy but he does "gym" a lot and probably has a lot of "stamina."
- Lexus SUV in beige, maybe a silver Mercedes.
- and I keep getting this mental image of gold jewelry, not sure why.

I say it varies, and the determining factor is when a woman refers to herself as "momma," as in "come to momma."

No specific age for cougardom, but you've reached it when you regularly violate the half your age plus seven rule.

I've always heard:

20's Kitten
30's Cougar
40's Puma
50's Jaguar

Mrs Robbison was not 35, but I guess she was more like a black widow or someone you see on Maury.

Is the male version, "Daddy"?

It's completely relative. I would say that a woman that is 7 years older than you on up is a Cougar. It's pretty messed up how an older lady getting together with a younger guy is a Couger but an older guy getting together with a younger girl is just a guy.

35 is about right. There are some precocious early-30s cougars, but their prey are 18 or 19-year old guys.

I'm with Brock. I assumed mid to late 40's and beyond is a cougar.

Of course, it really depends on the age gap. A 35 year old with a 21 year old has definitely moved into cougar territory.

i think

20's Kitten
30's Puma
40's Cougar
50's Jaguar (and drives one)

would make more sense. i just discussed this with a pacific-heights/marina crowd bartender (aka prey) and he agrees.

According to IMDB, Anne Bancroft was born in 1931, which would have made her 36 at the time The Graduate was made.

36? I need to go lie down now.

Yeah that's the funny thing about the Graduate. Hoffman was 32 or something wasn't he? So the drama was all in our MINDS!

Can cougars have children of their own? If so, seems like there should be some minimum age difference between your kids age and your prey. If your kids and prey are the same age, I think you lose cougar status and are just kind of freaky.

it's obviously just a state of mind. come on guys!

from the source, urbancougar.com:

urbancougar: it's not a stigma, it's a sophisticated species of female who seeks the pleasure of younger males. She avoids the entanglements of a "relationship," in favor of the freedom of the hunt.

She has overcome the taboos related to her sexual identity, embraced her true self, and now lives her life to its fullest. Always one for adventure, she knows what she wants and isn't afraid to get it!

This website is a celebration of the urbancougar lifestyle, the women who embody it, and the prey who love them for it!

all women are either one of the various classifications of cougar or are a cit, cougar in training:

Species: CIT

Cougar-in-training (also known as The Cub) Too young to be considered an actual Cougar, these industrious young women show all the tell-tale signs of future cougardom: an interest in younger men, a ravenous sexual appetite, and an indifference to marriage and other conventional romantic institutions.

If it were Logan's Run, it'd be 30. [Or 21 if you're referring to the book]

WRONG!! Milf can be ANY mom. theres no age requirement.

As for this imma fix it a tad :

10's Kitten
20's Lionesse
30's Puma
40's Cougar
50's Jaguar

im 28 and my co-woker called me a cougar and i refused the title. 30+ makes sence. Kitten is way too young. Lionesse makes more sence imo.

This all started when i mentioned the oldest you should date.

Your age, subtract 7 then multiply by 2.
Thats the oldest a woman should date.

As for men its add 7 divide by 2.
