An out-of-control dump truck hurtled down Divisadero Street Tuesday, smashing into nine cars and leaving three people with minor injuries.

The 26,000-pound truck started to roll down Divis near Vallejo Street at around 2:45 p.m., NBC Bay Area reports.

The truck, which had no driver, careened down the block, striking several cars "parked on the left side of the street facing downhill," KRON 4 reports.

The next intersection down, the truck struck three more occupied vehicles, including one driver by a driver for Uber. Occupants of two of those cars, "including the Uber driver, were taken to a hospital by ambulance for seemingly non-life-threatening injuries," according to KRON 4.

Its mad run was eventually stopped by a tree at the side of the road, ABC 7 reports.

NBC Bay Area says the truck belonged to Smart Demolition and Excavation, a subcontractor of Synergy housing. They'd been working at a construction site in the area "for a few weeks" before Tuesday's wreck.

Speaking with CBS 5, Smart owner Alex Galvan says that "his employees parked the truck with the emergency brake on, delivered the truck to the construction site and then left."

The truck was "also on special parking wedges to keep it from sliding," CBS 5 reports.

But apparently that wasn't enough, as construction workers say that as they began to load up the truck, it "began to move, rolled over the wedges, and then careened down the hill."

According to NBC, police say that truck's emergency brake failed, causing the vehicle to roll.

An area resident who was home at the time of the crash told KRON 4 that "two of her Mercedes SUVs were damaged" in the collision.

Cara Flaherty, who was in one of the vehicles the truck smashed into, tells NBC that the entire encounter "was terrifying."

Fifth And Market">
A new study from a potentially self-interested source (a personal injury law firm) has found that SF's most dangerous intersection for pedestrians is Fifth and Market Street, at least when looking at the years 2010 to 2016.

As CBS 5 reports, the study comes from personal injury lawyers Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoeneberger who partnered with the data visualization firm 1Point21, and it looked at data for 5,846 pedestrian collisions in SF during that six-year period.

By far the most of those collisions, 210, happened at Fifth and Market Streets, with Seventh and Market coming in second with just over half as many, 120, and Third and Market clocked in around the same.

Generally speaking, it's not super safe to be a pedestrian on Market Street, with over a quarter of the total pedestrian collisions over that period happening on the stretch between Van Ness and Montgomery Street — though a couple years back we also heard that it's pretty deadly to be a cyclist or a pedestrian at Octavia and Market or South Van Ness and Mission as well.

Out of the 5,846 pedestrian collisions between 2010 and 2016, 130 of them ended in a death.

Three people were injured, one severely, after two drivers passing through Golden Gate Park lost control and slammed into some nearby trees.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the crash occurred at 7:26 p.m. Wednesday, near where Crossover Drive meets with Park Presidio Boulevard. Tweets from the San Francisco Fire Department, however, place the crash closer to the entrance of the park, at Lincoln Way and 19th Avenue (which becomes Crossover as it enters the park). Both agencies have been contacted by SFist to clarify the wreck's location, and we'll update when we hear back.

According to the SFPD, the drivers of two cars "lost control and crashed into trees." The wreck was so severe, the SFFD says, that one of the victims of the wreck required "extensive extrication" from the damaged vehicle, an operation that wasn't concluded until 10 p.m.

Both drivers and one passenger were transported to the hospital, police say. Two of the victims, a 17-year-old male and a 24-year-old man, underwent injuries police say were not life-threatening. The subject of the SFFD extrication effort, a male of unknown age, suffered life-threatening injuries and was last reported as in critical condition.

As of publication time, an update on his condition or the circumstances of the crash were not available.

Wednesday night's crash was the second major wreck in Golden Gate Park that day: According to Hoodline, a multi-vehicle collision on Kezar Drive near JFK Drive occurred at around 8:20 a.m. Wednesday.

In that case, the crash "was a collision between two northbound cars and one southbound car that crossed into the oncoming lane" after which "several people were transported to a hospital." Additional details on that crash were not available as of Thursday morning.

A man was left with life-threatening injuries on a busy SF street Thursday, after an incident police characterize as a traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the crash occurred at 7:12 a.m. Thursday, near the intersection of California Street and Van Ness Avenue.

In a written report, the SFPD says that the victim, who they describe as between 30 and 40 years of age, was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries as a result of the wreck.

Police say that a witness to the incident "saw the vehicle rolling and heard [the victim] screaming." The victim, police say, "was pinned under the vehicle."

The driver of the vehicle was described by police as "unknown." And unknown is also an apt description for any other information in the case — What were the circumstances of the crash? Was this a parked vehicle, perhaps? Or if both parties were in motion, did the driver remain at the scene? — as a Friday morning call to SFPD with follow-up questions was not returned as of publication time. Needless to say, when they do call back, this report will be updated.

While the prognosis of a San Francisco police officer who was apparently intentionally struck by an SUV Wednesday remains unclear, a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. The collision between the car and the bicycle patrol officer happened around 12:20 p.m. on Turk Street near Franklin, and as we learned yesterday, the suspect is believed to be involved in a firearms case that the officer was investigating.

ABC 7 reports from a press conference Wednesday afternoon that multiple officers were on the scene of the incident and witnessed the collision.

The Examiner reports that a suspect was arrested at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on the 500 block of Ellis Street, and the suspect has not yet been publicly identified.

It remains unclear if this is the same suspect who, after allegedly driving his Lexus SUV into the officer, fled about a mile away and abandoned the vehicle near Buena Vista Park.

We learn via the Chronicle that the SUV had a stolen license plate on it, and that the owner of that license plate noticed it missing from their car around noon yesterday, shortly before the hit-and-run occurred.

The officer who was struck is in the intensive care unit following emergency surgery on Wednesday, and Assistant Police Chief Toney Chaplin tells the Chronicle, "I think that speaks for itself." The officer's identity has not been released, but the department says he's been on the force for four years, working out of Tenderloin Station.

Per ABC 7, Chaplin further said, "This is a tough day for the Police Department. Everyone right now is having a tough time with this, so I ask the public to keep the officer in their prayers.”

The SFPD had a somewhat chaotic day Wednesday because there was a separate incident in which a patrol officer suffered minor injuries in Japantown. As Hoodline reports, and SFPD squad car in pursuit of another vehicle got into a head-on collision around noon at the intersection of Geary Boulevard and Webster Street. The officer involved in the crash appeared OK, and walked away.

Update: The injured officer has been identified as Elia Lewin-Tankel, as ABC 7 reports, and the suspect in the hit-and-run has been identified as 50-year-old Maurice A. Johnson.

ABC 7 was reporting from the scene, and the officer, who was on bike patrol at the time, was transported to the hospital with extremely serious injuries. The Chronicle reports that his condition was critical as of 3 p.m. and he was headed into surgery.

The incident happened at 12:21 p.m., according to CBS 5, when a white Lexus SUV reportedly was responsible for the hit-and-run.

A large police presence then gathered around Buena Vista Park, and the SFPD put out a notice on Twitter for those in the area to shelter in place — as CBS 5 reports, this is due to the fact that the suspect vehicle was found parked near there, and the suspect reportedly then ran off, possibly toward Golden Gate Park.

SFPD spokesperson Sgt. Michael Andraychak gave a press conference this afternoon, and as the Chronicle reports he says the Tenderloin Station officer was "investigating a firearms case when the suspect in that case saw him approach and hit him with a tan or gold sport utility vehicle." The photo below, and CBS 5's earlier report, suggest that the vehicle is white, not gold, but this case is still unfolding.

The incident happened on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road just west of Hicks Valley Road just before noon Saturday, as ABC 7 reports, and the cyclists say that a dark blue Dodge Ram swerved into them intentionally.

All four were injured but one of the cyclists had to be flown to a hospital with severe injuries.

CHP officers say they were sent "numerous tips" that led them to a home in Novato where an arrest was made, and the photo above was posted, around midnight last night.

The Marin Independent Journal reports that the cyclists were participating in the Jensie Gran Fondo of Marin, a cycling event that benefits the Marin Bicycle Coalition.

The Marin CHP writes, "We are grateful to serve a community that looks out for one another. Often times in situations like this people think they see something but often dismiss it as an unlikely coincidence. When we ask for help we are asking you to disregard that feeling and let us know. Sometimes it's the smallest detail that leads us to a suspect."

Three Dead On Bay Area Roads After CHP Officer Strikes Pedestrian, Wrong-Way Driver Speeds Down 880

At least three people were killed in Bay Area traffic collisions this weekend, among them a pedestrian who was fatally struck by a California Highway Patrol officer and two drivers killed in a head-on...

SF News

880

CHP

collision

crash

half moon bay

wreck

Eve Batey

At least three people were killed in Bay Area traffic collisions this weekend, among them a pedestrian who was fatally struck by a California Highway Patrol officer and two drivers killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 880.

It was 4:15 a.m.Saturday morning when the first wreck occurred, on northbound 880 in Oakland, "just south of Broadway" ABC 7 reports.

According to KRON 4, a dark-colored sedan was seen "traveling the wrong way...without its headlights on."

Around five minutes later, that car "slammed head-on into another vehicle traveling in the right direction," KRON 4 reports.

Killed in the crash were the two drivers of the cars, identified by the Chron as 26-year-old Joel Hutchinson of Oakland and 23-year-old San Leandro resident Jennifer Huezo Ruiz. The CHP could not immediately say which victim drove which car (and was therefore responsible for the collision) "because of the wreckage at the scene."

There were no passengers in either car, the CHP says, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The investigation into the wreck is ongoing, police say, including a toxicology report to determine if drugs or alcohol played a part in the collision.

Then, at 8:24 p.m. Saturday night, a man leaving a wedding reception at Half Moon Bay's Sam’s Chowder House was fatally struck by a CHP officer as he crossed Highway 1, ABC 7 reports.

"Restaurant staff said the victim had just finished eating and was trying to leave when he was struck by the patrol car," CBS 5 reports. The victim has not been publicly identified, but was from Burlingame, they report.

According to ABC 7, the victim was attempting to cross Highway 1 between Capistrano Road and Coronado Street when he was struck. Redwood City CHP says via statement that "It appears the CHP vehicle was traveling northbound on SR-1 when it collided with a 74-year-old Filipino male pedestrian." He died at the scene.

CHP Officer Art Montiel tells NBC Bay Area "somehow [the CHP driver] collided with the pedestrian." The CHP officer behind the wheel during the collision has not been publicly identified.

"Our vehicles are equipped with cameras, so that’s something that we’re going to be looking at to see what happened," Montiel said.

According to patrons who spoke with NBC, when the restaurant's main parking lot fills up, guests often park across the street, then are left "dodging highway traffic on foot to get to their destination."

There are no streetlights in the area, they report, adding to the risks. "We're taking our lives into our own hands; it’s very hard to get across the street," one guest told NBC. "There's a constant line of traffic ever since we’ve arrived here."

"It’s kind of crazy with the traffic," another said. "It’s hard to cross streets, it’s hard to pull out, it’s hard to do anything. No parking anywhere."

Montiel tells NBC that "the officer as been temporarily pulled from patrol duty during the investigation, which is being handled by a Vallejo-based team." Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call CHP Officer Kurtis Waldschmidt at (650) 369-6261.
