The San Francisco Klansman who last Saturday stabbed three counter-protesters when a fight broke out at a Ku Klux Klan rally in Anaheim lives in San Francisco's Marina district with his mother. Charles Donner, who was initially arrested at the anti-immigration rally but then released after police determined that he was acting in self-defense, is 51 years old.

According to SF Weekly, Donner lives in a house across from the Palace of Fine Arts and has a penchant for collecting Nazi memorabilia. He is reportedly a registered security guard, although the publication notes that it was unable to reach Donner for comment.

Donner was apparently left behind by the black SUV that drove him to the rally, after protesters began to attack the car.

"Regardless of an individual or groups’ beliefs or ideologies, they are entitled to live without the fear of physical violence and have the right, under the law, to defend themselves when attacked," a police statement, reported by OC Weekly, says of the KKK rally. The paper further notes that none of the Klan members involved in the brawl are in custody, while 7 counter-protesters remain in custody.

A San Francisco man was one of the people arrested during a violent Ku Klux Klan rally in Anaheim Saturday, and according to all media reports, the local fellow is a Klansman, not one of the counter-protesters at the anti-immigration event.

Bay City News reports that 51-year-old San Francisco man Charles Donner was arrested at Saturday's SoCal demonstration, which was "a planned anti-immigration rally" according to the Associated Press.

The AP reports that when six Klansmen (including Donner) arrived at the pre-advertised site of the rally, a park about three miles from Disneyland, they were greeted by as many as 30 counter-protesters.

The Klansmen reportedly "pulled up in a black SUV and took out signs reading 'White Lives Matter,'" while "dressed in black shirts decorated with the Klan cross and Confederate flag patches." According to the AP, the anti-Klan crowds swarmed the SUV, and the driver pulled away, leaving three KKK guys behind.

Then all hell broke loose, as protesters smashed the SUV's windshield, and began to beat and kick the Klansmen. According to Brian Levin, who directs the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino, the anti-Klan ralliers were "were so angry, they would have torn these folks limb from limb...I was afraid for their lives."

Levin, who found himself protecting the Klansmen from the counter-protesters, took video of the event. It's pretty graphic, so think before playing.

As the brawl progressed, a Klansman used the sharp end of a pole attached to an American flag to beat protesters back, stabbing three in the process.

Donner and four more of his co-Klansmen were arrested at the rally for assault with a deadly weapon. All were released, the AP reports, when police determined that their actions had been in self-defense. Seven counter-protesters who "were seen beating, stomping and attacking the Klansmen with wooden posts" remain in custody.

Cry of the Fishmonger Special Report: Sartorial Splendor‏

Orange is the new black, apparently. Compared to the old sweaters and pants, the new ones use some new fancy fabrics to absorb moisture and are more form-fitting. The result? Hockey players will now look like this.

Hope you like angular guitar bands from Scotland, hockey fans.

Many other teams have used the uniform supplier-switch to update their logos, colors, and sweater designs. Some successful, some decidedly, disturbingly not.

Most of the classic logos and sweaters are only minimally changed.

The Fishmonger Style Council grades the Sharks changes a tepid B, given the generally underwhelming results across the league of these redesigns. Cartoony logos don't age well, and the addition of orange is plain bewildering, especially considering the hated Anaheim Ducks switch to black and orange last year (although they comically updated their sweaters with a beauty-queen sash . The old-school horizontal striping is nice, however, and the modified logo is still kind of cool, even if it now looks like something the Aquabats might adopt.

Things are looking up in a way, as the High Speed Rail Authority approved the project's first phase. However, the Fresno Bee recently reported another wrinkle: Since the management for San Diego (and its inferior burritos), the Southern California Association of Governments, is pushing for "magnetic levitation trains," rather than steel-wheeled ones, that city may get left on the boarding platform. As the plan stands, the train will initially go from San Francisco to Anaheim.

While we're all in favor of getting quick transportation from NoCal to SoCal, it makes little sense to do it in an non-comprehensive way. Sacramento and San Diego be included in the plans for maximum benefit to the state, its businesses, and its citizens.

Of course, it looks like the various authorities have plenty of time to work out their differences as the Guv., legislature, Congress, private investors, and various subcommitees work out exactly where the necessary billions of dollars will come from.

Even Game 2, the Predators 5-2 win, was not decided until late in the 3rd period. Nashville's undisciplined play (they led all playoff teams with almost 30 minutes of penalties per game) was their undoing, even though the Sharks power play was more or less ineffective, and often frankly ugly to watch. But it was one more way to wear down the Nashville defenders, and keep their skill players on the bench. Patrick Marleau again scored some big goals, and Joe Thornton took the first step toward erasing his playoff-choker reputation with dominating play and 6 points in the series.

Nashville wasn't the only team to distinguish itself with dirty play in this year's playoffs. The Calgary Flames managed to steal the spotlight by having their backup goalie come in to play lumberjack to the Detroit Red Wings Johan Franzen's, umm, old growth redwood late in Game 5 of their series (Franzen, fittingly, scored the series winner in Game 6). Then the Flames' Jarome Iginla and Daymond Langkow got in the act late in the game (cross-checking plus slashing and sucker-punching, respectively). Classy. Brad May of the Anaheim Ducks got a 3 game suspension for sucker-punching the back of Minnesota Wild defenseman Kim Johnsson (who is both emphatically not a pugilist, and happened to be Minnesota's best D man), which then caused a multi-player dust-up between the Ducks and Wild during the *pre-game skate* of Game 5 in their series.

Selanne was called for unsportsmanlike conduct at the beginning of overtime, negating a Craig Rivet penalty that was carrying over from the end of regulation, and San Jose went on to win the shootout for a 3-2 victory. The Sharks came back to even the score after being down by 2 goals in the first period, and both teams helped their playoff positioning against the Dallas Stars.

The expansion of hockey outside of the snow belt has often meant late- season and playoff games are played on ice that in other circumstances would be better off scooped up, drizzled with syrup, and handed to small children. Anaheim's ice last night was terrible, and it marred what otherwise was a tightly played, playoff-intense game between two excellent teams. The ice did help out the Sharks, however, when both Selanne (now using a legal stick) and Andy McDonald flubbed their shootout attempts, making Jonathan Cheechoo's and Ryan Clowe's shootout goals standup.

Um, remember what we were saying about Jonathan Cheechoo not scoring goals?
So here comes Rev. Louis P. We love a good baseball fight. That's because the very first baseball game we ever watched was the one where Nolan Ryan put that dude who rushed the mound in a headlock and pounded the crap out of him. Ah, memories.

Anyways, we have no idea what's going on in the season or anything that happened in the game last night beyond what we saw on the news last night (Chavvy hit a homer, A's won), but we can tell you that in the sixth, A's catcher Jason Kendall, up at bat, thought Angels pitcher John Lackey was taunting him about getting intentionally beaned for walks, and ran straight at him. Two Angels grabbed Kendall, who nevertheless managed to take Lackey down before both teams raced onto the field, for our slo-mo TiVo delight. Video here.

This is the first bench-clearer for the A's since 1993 in Milwaukee (while the Angels got in their last big fight in 2002 against San Diego, in spring training.) This is Kendall's second time charging the mound, too -- in 2004, Kendall went after (now-teammate -- awkward!) Joe Kennedy when Kennedy was at Colorado and Kendall was with Pittsburg.

Did any of that even make sense? Don't worry, folks, SFist Jake will be back soon.

Barry's Annual State of the Barry Speech

For those who haven't heard, BARRY HAS ARRIVED IN TRAINING CAMP! We repeat, BARRY HAS ARRIVED IN TRAINING CAMP! A day late, however, something that drew a raised eyebrow from some ("oh my God, Barry did something on his own again"). Like last year, Barry met the press to give his annual State of Barry Address, but this time didn't do it press-conference style, instead he just answered few informal questions from the dugout. Probably a smart move as last year's infamous press conference, the one where he spent most of the time berating the press, could only have been a worse P.R. move if he would have given the entire thing while Jose Canseco injected steroids in his ass. Nothing terribly exciting was said, but to sum up: will decide about retiring at the end of the season, wants to spend more time with his family, doesn't want to play for another team, and wants to retire as a Giant. Since we've long since learned not to believe anything the Barry has to say, we take his comments with a grain of salt and wouldn't be surprised to see him wearing a L.A. Angels of Anaheim in Orange County Right Off of the Imperial Highway uniform next season.

It appears that the will-he-or-won't-he-retire theme, which got off to a rousing start with last Sunday's statement and retraction stories, will be a recurring one throughout the season and one we'll all get sick of soon enough. Expect lots of conflicting statements from Barry, lots of speculative speculation from people who have no idea what they're talking about (like us), and lots of columnists wishing the saga would go away while still treating every Brett Favre Hamlet-like retirement posture (now in year five) as if the fate of the world somehow depended on it.

In other spring training Giants' news, that concerning the Barry-ettes, Jason Schmidt appears to have discovered his mojo, the Matt Cain bandwagon is growing, Pedro Feliz is happy to be playing his original position again, and Armando Benitez looks good.
That's very exciting, but there's also a pennant race going on just across the bay from 24 Willie Mays Plaza. After Monday night's 2-0 victory in Cleveland, the A's are a game behind Los Los Angeles Angeles de Anaheim Anaheim in the AL West and 1 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the AL Wild Card race. There are only so many ways to write that it's all going to come down to 4 games against Los Los Angeles Angeles at the Coliseum at the end of September, though, and to exhort our readers to get over there and get behind the green and gold, so we'll be back with that message in a week or so. Today, we've got bigger problems. Bigger problems, even, than Harden's oblique or Crosby's ankle. Media problems.

For the last couple years, A's games have been broadcast on 610 AM, which until this season, was the AM affiliate of 99.7 FM, KFRC--the oldies station. That was cool. Now, though, 610 AM is KEAR, Family Radio: A Worldwide Christian Ministry. In practical terms, that means A's fans all over the Bay Area who have listened to the ballgame in the car on Tuesday night now get up Wednesday morning, turn the ignition, and hear, instead of "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" or "Twist and Shout," scripture, gospel, fire and brimstone.
It was hard to imagine, back then, that the A's would be playing meaningful games when schoolkids were buying pencil boxes and new backpacks, but here's this (Go Bears!), and here's this. After the first week of school and two disappointing, if hard-fought, losses in three games in the O.C. this week, the A's are tied with Los Los Angeles Angeles for first place. That's right, first place: 75-58. That's the same record as the Yankees, in a three-way tie for the AL wild card spot in the playoffs.

The A's have 29 games left on their schedule. If they win 16 of them, they will have outperformed last year's squad, which, lest we forget, had guys named Hudson, Mulder, Dotel and Durazo. If they win 20 of those 29 games--which include 3 against the Yankees, 3 against the Indians (1 game back in the Wild Card standings), 3 against Boston (3 1/2 games up on the Yankees in the East and so very much a part of the Wild Card picture) and 4 at home against Los Los Angeles Angeles at the end of September--we expect the A's to make the playoffs.

A's Brand Baseball: The Cruelest Month

Sunday night, the A’s finished a 3-4 road trip with a frustrati...

SF News

Anaheim

Anaheim Anaheim

Angeles

As

baby

Barry Zito

baseball

chicago

Chicago White Sox

Coliseum

Dan Haren

games

Jason Kendall

Joe Blanton

Jon Garland

Los

Los Angeles

Los Los Angeles Angeles

Mark Kotsay

News+Sports

Nick Swisher

Oakland

Rich Harden

the game

White Sox

jake

The anemic run production—3 shutouts and an AL-worst 70 runs scored in 19 games—has caused some A’s fans to push the panic button, and frankly it doesn’t have SFist turning cartwheels or anything, but our calendar still reads April. Just two days after trading Tim Hudson to Atlanta for three guys we'd never heard of, the A's traded Mark Mulder to St. Louis for two other guys we'd never heard of, plus Kiko Calero. It was a dark day. Night. Whatever.

Most of us have calmed down, but on Hegenberger Rd. it's a brave new world for 2005. Pitchers (minus Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder) and catchers reported last week, and conventional wisdom picks the A's, who finished one (winnable) game behind Anaheim in 2004, to finish last in the AL West. Conventional wisdom sucks, though, so let's take a look at Billy Beane's One Crazy Green and Gold Winter and see what to expect in 2005.

We won't miss Mark Redman, Arthur Rhodes, Jim Mecir, Chris Hammond, and Damian Miller. SFist does have a soft spot for Vacaville's own Jermaine Dye, who had 59 RBI in 61 games with the A's in 2001, but in 2004 he played like it was company-picnic softball and he was drunk. So far, so good.

We will miss Mark Mulder and Tim Hudson, who are great. Mulder makes good hitters look bad; Hudson makes them look worse. Eric Chavez called Hudson the heart and soul of the A's; Billy Beane compared him to Dave Stewart. Neither pitcher is exactly coming off a career year, but this space will not claim that trading them was savvy, or that it removed an albatross from around anyone's neck.

Even we were a bit shocked and saddened. But then we thought to ourselves, "Hey, wait, isn't the Traditional Values Coalition based in Anaheim? Man, no wonder they're so skittish -- they're absolutely inundated with convicted sex offenders."

So we figured if we could use MapQuest, we could use the Megan's Law website (though not to cruise for dates, that's for sure). Defamer, of course, compared the Mouse House to the density of offenders around Neverland Ranch (two dots). We figured we'd see how some of our more infamous neighborhoods stacked up. Shocking! results after the jump.

Saturday, 2 October 2004 will long be remembered as a dark day for Northern California baseball fans.
SFist kinda wants to throw up just writing about this, so either we wrap up this piece right here or our keyboard gets covered in vomit. Either way, that's all you get. Until tomorrow, at least, when we write favorably about the Dodgers, thus fulfilling part of the bet we lost to LAist.
