Hey Shark fans, it looks like the Stanley Cup is pretty much guaranteed this year as the team made a big announcement that’ll put them over the top: new logos. The problem with the team wasn't a propensity to choke in the playoffs but the shark on the shirt wasn't mean looking enough. What better way to overcome a perception of softness?
The new logo (logos, actually, as a whole bunch of new logos have been created-- all the better for marketing purposes) features a darker teal, a dollop of orange, and teal on the shark. One blogger out there says the new logo has "a little Japanimation thrown in." Besides making the shark meaner, the people responsible say the logo will give it more of a 3D effect. Maybe they can hand out 3D glasses before games to really go for the look? There will also be a new "Shark Shield" logo as well as a fin logo that looks like a shark lurking around in the water, maybe to go after another kayaker. Shark fans appear to be mixed.
New unis should be on the horizon too but won't be unveiled until September. If you want to get a sneak peak, you can check it out here. Do orange and dark teal really go together?
We're not big fans of new uniforms and new logos as we always think that if something ain't broke, don't fix it and the old Sharks unis were pretty cool. We're also not so into this whole thing as we're big believers in simplicity and tradition. The coolest uniforms are always the simple, old-fashioned ones. Especially in hockey. What are some of the most iconic uniforms in hockey? The Maple Leafs, Canadians, and Blackhawks-- you know, old time hockey uniforms. Like what Eddie Shore, Dit Clapper, & Toe Blake wore.
Besides, these things always come off more like money grabs than aesthetic decisions.

Nice Eddie Shore reference. Somewhere, the Hanson brothers are celebrating by putting on the foil.
At least it's a relatively minor change, but it's in the wrong direction. Too cartoony.
I don't even know if cartooning it up is a trend that'll last. There are a few NBA and NHL teams that had pretty cartoonish logos for awhile and eventually "rolled back" to something more dignified (the Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Coyotes come to mind)
It's hockey.
Who gives a shit?
It's hockey.
Who gives a shit?
Hockey fans. Like, duh!
I give it a B-. Better than it could be (I'm glad it's essentially the same logo), but boy is it going to look dated in 10 years (and not in a good way). I'm not a big fan of the orange, or the tail on the shark in the full logo. The fin patch is really nice, though.
The problem here is that, absent a classic design like the original 6 teams, any graphic designer trying to update the logo will be trying to make it look new. And that means, in this day and age, "3D and dynamic", and influenced by comics and so on. If someone came up with the Bruins B-spoke now, or the Canadiens stylized "CHC", a lot of people would find it boring.
And apparently boredom is the reaction to the Capitals news unis, which I think are pretty good, actually. Much less busy and dull. The new Bruins logo and sweaters are the high-water mark so far. I'm hoping the Canucks go back to their old, old school "C made with hockey stick", which were their 3rd uniforms this last year, and are really awesome.
