Amoeba Music on Haight Street will be mobbed with Asian pop fans Thursday as boy band product Jackson Wang is coming in for a meet-and-greet session. But do not buy a ticket, as any tickets out there are all fakes.

KRON4 has the news that Hong Kong pop star Jackson Wang is coming to Amoeba Music on Haight Street next week, which begs the question for many people… who is Hong Kong pop star Jackson Wang?

Originally a competitive fencer (!), Wang gained superstardom in the mid-2010s as a member of the South Korean boy band Got7, along with K-Pop star BamBam. He’s since put out two very successful solo albums, the most recent being 2022’s Magic Man, that is, until last night's midnight release of his new album, rather uncreatively named MAGICMAN 2.

Wang’s Amoeba Music autograph-signing appearance is on Thursday, July 24 at 4 pm. It’s sold out, so don’t expect to get anywhere near him unless you already have the required receipt and voucher. And the only way you would have that receipt and voucher is if you ordered MAGICMAN 2 as a pre-order specifically from Amoeba Music starting back on July 2.

Though as the Amoeba Records Facebook page informs us, there are already scam tickets out there for Thursday’s meet-and-greet. “Please be on alert! There is a scam going around,” Amoeba Music posted on Wednesday. “You must have an actual receipt & voucher to attend the SOLD OUT Jackson Wang event. There are no digital tickets.”

Wang will only be taking pictures with fans Thursday, and will not be signing autographs. But if you have that voucher to get in, you’ll be able to have a brief chat with him, as Wang is fluent in English (plus Cantonese, Mandarin, and Korean).

As seen in the above two posts, Jackson Wang last performed in San Francisco at a sold-out Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in 2023, and he was also at this past February’s NBA All-Star Game (of course, to shill for some brand). He’s additionally credited as being the first Chinese solo artist to play the Coachella Festival, with feature performances in 2022 and 2023, and a cameo appearance with the Korean vocalist BIBI in 2024.

The fabulous RuPaul will be at Amoeba today signing her latest dance pop album, Glamazon.

If you purchase the album, you'll get a pass to attend the signing (space is limited - get there early), and Amoeba will have a photographer taking photos of each person at the signing table. Photos will be posted on amoeba.com after the event.

MUSIC: Indie folk/country jazz duo Dean & Britta (former Luna members) perform at Yoshi's-SF. "Mazzy Star-like" songstress Keren Ann joins them as well. SOLD OUT. Alas. (Well, how about Flipper over at Amoeba, performing at 6 p.m.? We don't really know much about this '80s punk band. Sorry. Although according to flavorpill, Kurt Cobain seemed to like them. So...there you have it.)

CLUB: Over at The Transfer, DJ Rapid Fire hits the decks at "Sucker-Punch" — happening every Monday — where you can get drunk on the cheap with $1 cans of PBR. Read more about it here.

You get three new songs on the second CD, including a new version of "Sexy Back." Worth $17.99 - Nah. We'll just purchase the three new songs on iTunes for $2.98.

2. Westlife - Back Home: This Irish boy-band has sold over 36 million albums. Not one of them to me. They've had huge success over in the U.K. with fourteen #1 singles. They must be doing something right.

3. Mudvayne - By the People, for the People: Heavy metal. Bleh.

Standouts: (There are no major standouts this week)

2. Enchanted - Soundtrack: We are thinking that the only song on this album that's worth listening to is Jon McLaughlin's "So Close." We've seen him twice in concert and each time he's been nothing but stellar. We think we'll just download that one song.

3. U2 - Joshua Tree (Remastered): Nothing much that we can add to this, except if you don't own this masterfully crafted 80's album, then go buy the remastered version. For old and new fans alike, U2 re-releases one of our favorite albums. Ever.

4. Six Organs of Admittance - Shelter from the Ash: iTunes classifies Six Organs of Admittance as "freak folk." You laugh, but it's true. We have to agree with them on that. It seems that you have to be in the right mood to venture into the mind of Ben Chasney. Check out their free show at Amoeba in Berkeley on Thursday, December 6th. (Listen to: "Jade Like Wine.")

-- Interiors (1978): Woody Allen's tribute to Ingmar Bergman seems to have gotten lost in the fold over time (it came out between Annie Hall and Manhattan), but it really is one of his best films, ever. Not a chuckle to be found during this beautiful movie focusing on three sisters and one suicidal Martha Stewart-esque mother. Screens at 5:10 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. (with Love and Death at 7 p.m.) at the Castro Theatre; $6-9.

-- The Go! Team: Everyone else dances like there's no one watching when listening to the Go! Team. Why not you? Plays tonight at 7 p.m. at Amoeba Records (SF); free.

-- Donna Uchizono Company's Thin Air: Read more about this critically-French kissed dance performance here. Starts at 8 p.m. at the ODC Theatre; $18-25.

Blocker, No. 19: Haight St. in the Upper Haight

A man in a black leather jacket carefully backs his Yamaha into one of the six motorcycle spaces on Haight at the corner of Shrader. He's here to see Pinback's in-store performance at Amoeba Music across the street later in the evening, but he's also pulled his bike into a world where the warm early evening air is alternately punctured by the scent of patchouli, McChickens, pee, and smoke from silly cigarettes. Plenty of off-street fee parking and reminders of the 1960s glory days are also available.

Certain parts of Haight between Shrader and Stanyan have seen better commercial days – specifically, the shuttered and boarded Cala supermarket at its west end, and on a much lesser scale, the former home of taco/burrito retailer Chabela's at 1805 (dormant since the mid-'00s) – and there's no escaping the persistently suffocating sense of flower power and "revolution" around here anytime soon. (Kind bud?) The vibe on the block's sidewalks can be construed as seamy or circus-like (or perhaps both), depending upon one's tolerance for American Youth in Very Big Pants, or for politely deranged men pushing shopping carts and singing "COME TO AFRICA!!" at the top of their high-pitched lungs. But regardless of one's frame of reference, there's always a lot to take in down here in Amoeba Gulch.

Last Thursday night we went to Bimbo's to see Stereo Total at the behest of a good friend. We'd never seen the duo before but they charmed us with their energy, humor, zesty accents (hers French, his German) and playful relationship with the English language. Françoise played the laid back good-natured chanteuse while Brezel flailed about with the energy of a toddler. The songs were fun and fast and they kept them coming through a few different encores, culminating in an onstage dance party with a bunch of folks in the front row. And now for this week's show recommendations. Hustle to Amoeba by 7pm to see a free performance by Pinback. Later on Scissors For Lefty open for The Bravery at the Warfield. And let's all wish a very happy birthday to Popscene! To celebrate 11 years of breaking artists, premier performances and jam-packed dance parties, Hot Hot Heat perform at Popscene's home of 330 Ritch along with guest DJs from The Bravery. Friday night's for dancing, apparently. Rickshaw Stop presents Disco Hook Up 2007 with Hey Willpower, Hot Tub, Voxhaul Broadcast and DJ Omar. Robot Rock presents VHS or Beta and Walter Meego at Mezzanine.

This week's show recommendations: Hurry up and head over to Amoeba at 6pm for a chance to see Okkervil River perform for free and then get a free, limited edition CD sampler when you purchase their new one The Stage Names (while supplies last, of course). Later on this evening you have a serious wealth of options to see good music. Our dear friend Ashod Simonian is on the road with Stereo Total who play tonight at Bimbo's with The Octopus Project. Ashod's toured with many a great band and recently put out a book called Real Fun which features 100+ candid Polaroids of musicians on tour during their downtime, including Spoon, Death Cab, Jenny Lewis, Broken Social Scene and tons more plus a CD with tracks by Irving, Dios Malos and Norfolk & Western. Over at the Warfield, Rilo Kiley perform songs from their new one Under The Blacklight (which we don't think sounds at all like Fleetwood Mac, for the record) with Lewis' man-friend Jonathan Rice and Grand Ole Party. Cafe Du Nord's got the oddly-named pair of Joan As Police Woman plus Michael Zapruder's Rain of Frogs. Bottom of the Hill presents Sacramento's nostalgic Nintendo-music tribute band The Advantage with Them Hills and The Lovely Public. For some local music, you could see Thee More Shallows at Hemlock or Eats Tapes and Lemonade at Rickshaw Stop.

Last week was a great week for live music, and we managed to see three fantastic shows. Last Friday we started off seeing Rufus Wainwright at Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium. Having (somehow) never been there before, we were delighted that it's yet another not-a-bad-seat-in-the-house venue in a city full of (in our opinion) the best in the country. It was a classy setting for a positively theatrical performance: Rufus strutted out in his lederhosen and took his place behind the grand piano, with his all male revue on bass, drums, horns and guitar. All but Rufus wore fake moustaches (he associates SF with moustaches, he said) and a lot of 70's inspired stripes. One guy in the three-person horn section was the spitting image of John Galliano. Rufus filled the room with his enormous voice and offered a setlist to satisfy the most acute case of A.D.D. He pulled from old and new material, donned a glittering diamond necklace to prepare for a few Judy Garland covers, and sang without the microphone on an Irish standard. We were thrilled to hear live renditions of some of the huge sounds off of Release The Stars. The singing and playing were spot on, and Sir Wainwright really knows how to deliver a performance.
