SF is getting ahead of this heatwave, which was supposed to kick into high gear Wednesday but it looks like you will be feeling the heat today (Tuesday) in various parts of the city — Alert SF just put out an advisory saying temps could be in the 90s. With that in mind, the city is opening up six public pools for free Tuesday to Thursday, and there's a list of various cooling centers to keep in mind for kids, the ill, and the elderly, who are most susceptible to heat. (Here's a handy map.)

As NBC Bay Area reported earlier, the city of San Francisco seemingly ignored its own extreme heat plan when the September 1 heat spike struck, which left the city partly unprepared for a spike in 911 calls — the plan, in place since a 2006 heatwave struck the city, accounts for such a spike.

But now we have the list of cooling centers and free pools via the Examiner and the Chronicle, and the city's getting the word out there. Today's high is predicted only in the mid- to upper 70s, however it's still going to be around 67 degrees at 10 p.m. tonight ahead of tomorrow's expected spike — which at the moment is still supposed to be mid- to upper 80s, but we'll see!

Below, the cooling centers for reference, many of which are branch libraries. But first, the public pools that will be free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday:
