A benefit dinner happening next Monday, September 25 at Jardiniere in San Francisco will be a first-of-its kind fundraiser for the local area with proceeds directly going to pay registration renewal fees for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, a.k.a. Dreamers. These renewals, for 2,000 or so Bay Area Dreamers whose status in the program is expiring and who may not otherwise be able to afford them, cost $495 and must be submitted before Oct 5, 2017.

Chef-owner Traci Des Jardins has offered up the Franklin Room at the restaurant for the eight-course dinner, which will have room for 50 guests, with ticket options of $249 or $495 — the latter allowing an attendee to fully sponsor a Dreamer's application renewal fee.

Chefs lined up to cook the meal include Rogelio Garcia, who is Executive Chef at The Commissary where he collaborates with Des Jardins; chef Jeremy Nelson, an alum of Lazy Bear and Acquerello; and Sophina Uong, executive chef at Mestiza Taqueria in SoMa and formerly chef at Oakland's Pican.

"So many people in the Bay Area wanted to help the Dreamers in our community, many of whom are our friends, family members, and employees,” says Chef Andrea Gray, a local private chef and author of Celebraciones Mexicanas: History, Traditions and Recipes, who will also be cooking. "I am blown away by the support we’ve received for this effort, from amazing chefs, from Traci des Jardins, from food purveyors, designers and just so many people who didn't hesitate to step up. We hope this benefit dinner will not only help Dreamers file the necessary extensions, but also show them how important they are to the Bay Area community."

Meanwhile, just today, a lawsuit was filed in federal court on behalf of six California Dreamers against the Trump administration, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was shouted down by DACA supporters at a news conference in San Francisco today, who were apparently unhappy that she other Democrats sat down with President Trump to discuss DACA last week. "You're a liar!" one shouted, "You met with Trump and you call that resistance?"

Find tickets for the dinner here, and they may go quickly, with only 50 available. All ticket sales will go to Mission Asset Fund's (MAF) DACA Scholarship Fund.
