Case synopsis: RP reports a sexual assault that occured at the listed location.Officers contact the subject and take a report.
The site of the assault, Mary Ward Hall, is a dorm for first-year students that houses about 420 residents of both genders.
Jonathan Morales, SF State’s director of news and news media told the Golden Gate Xpress, which is SFSU student newspaper, that "the University could not comment on the incident in order to protect the victim and because the investigation is currently ongoing."
“Our focus is on the victim right now and making efforts so that something like this doesn’t happen again,” he said.
Speaking with the Ex, Morales described the investigation as "high priority," but refused to comment further, saying that “We need to preserve the privacy of the victim."
Morales also refused to provide the gender of the victim, or to confirm if the victim was a student, according to the Chron.
To preserve the “integrity of the investigation,” Morales refused to provide Bay City News with any suspect information or to say if any arrests had been made.
Though SF State often sends out alerts to students and faculty when on-campus crime occurs (for example, here and here), Morales confirms that no such notification was sent our regarding Saturday morning's assault.
Just last month, a female student was sexually assaulted by a man she did not know while in the lobby of Burk Hall, which houses SFSU's school of education. According to the Golden Gate Xpress, that was the second such assault in that area this year.
Bay City News reports that in 2013, SF State's dorms were the site of four reported rapes, one report of sexual battery and seven domestic violence reports.
In 2014, there were five reported rapes in the dorms, three reports of sexual battery and four reports of on-campus dating violence.
