With Brown, Oxford, and Hogwarts degrees to her name, Emma Watson would be a welcome addition to any number of powerful Bay Area tech companies. But for now, Watson is content to play a techie on the silver screen opposite Tom Hanks in an adaptation of local author Dave Eggers' dystopian novel The Circle. As Variety reports, she's just signed on to the vehicle which James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) is directing from his own script adaptation of the 2013 novel.
In the book, which received mostly positive reviews, Watson's character is Mae Holland, a recent college graduate who lands a job at a tech monopoly that's swallowed the likes of Facebook and Google. Successful as both satire and critique, The Circle, if at times obvious or paranoid, was highly cinematic.
California shooting will start in September, though it's not clear if the Bay Area setting from the novel means that filming will take place in San Francisco and its environs or whether a studio lot will have to do.
