The SFPD just released the photos above and below of the person of interest caught on a surveillance near the scene where that suitcase appeared on Wednesday afternoon containing multiple dismembered body parts.

The city's medical examiner has also released its preliminary findings about the remains, only saying that they belonged to a white (or light-skinned) male. "The assistance of the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Forensic Services DNA Laboratory will be necessary to aid in the identification process," says the medical examiner's office in a statement. "The case is under active investigation with the cause and manner of death pending."

Police were called to the scene on 11th Street between Market and Mission on Wednesday, January 28, after receiving a report of a suspicious suitcase. Inside they found the chopped up remains, as well as more remains in a trash can nearby.

The person of interest pictured, whom they say may be a transient, is described as a white male, in his 50s or early 60s, around 5’7” or 5’8”. In the photos he's wearing a pinstripe baseball hat, blue and orange jacket, and light blue jeans.

We don't yet know where and when the murder may have occurred, so this death does not yet count in SF's already alarmingly high homicide count for the new year.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the San Francisco Police Department are asking anyone who has information pertaining to this case to contact the SFPD Anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444, or text a tip to “SFPD” at TIP411.

Update: Via a tip, following the release of the photos, police located two individuals on Friday evening around 7:30 p.m. on the 400 block of Turk. They detained both individuals, one of whom is the person of interest, for questioning at the Hall of Justice. Neither man has been arrested as far as we know.
