Tomorrow: Human "Tax the Rich" Banner at Ocean Beach

ImpeachBeach4-28-07.jpg
The "Impeach Now" banner from 2007 drew 1,500 participants.
In concurrence with the Occupy movement, folks will be forming a human banner at Ocean Beach tomorrow morning, which will spell out "TAX THE RICH!" Over 600 people -- and counting -- have signed up to take part in the event.

Update: See how it turned out in our follow-up post!

The message will consist of human-formed letters 100 feet tall and 10 feet wide and will stretch hundreds of feet down the beach, where it will be photographed from a helicopter hovering above. All participants will be mailed over-sized postcards in which they can spot "their own pixeled selves."

The event is being coordinated by Brad Newsham, who's successfully organized past human banner events, such as the famous "Impeach Now!" banner, in collaboration with The Other 98%.

Be sure to sign up if you want to take part in the banner so the organizers will be prepared for what's sure to be a large crowd.

I'd go if it still said "Impeach."  Not that there's anything wrong with taxing the rich, but let's not create a double standard for Democrat war criminals.

I second this message, but would extend it to a US crime which is not necessarily a war crime (killing a badguy American citizen without trial).

I'm not sure that cleric even stepped outside the bounds of free speech--if preaching about the evils of America is assassination-worthy, Obama should send a predator drone to kill off his old preacher from Chicago.  But it was really over the top to go back again a few days later in order to murder the cleric's 16 year old kid (also a US citizen).

  • Millionaires with capital gains, which are no longer taxed due to deregulation over the past couple of decades, mainly thanks to the repealing of the Glass-Steagall act, which previously separated commercial banking from investment banking.

Q: Who are these "rich" they want to tax
Your Answer: Millionaires with [no] capital gains [taxes]

First. Did you know that the tax rate on capital gains has nothing to do with the repeal of the Glass-Steagall act. They are two separate issues.

Second, millionaires pay the highest percent in capital gains taxes. People that have an income in the highest bracket actually pay the maximum amount on their capital gains (15%), whereas people in the lowest 2 federal tax brackets pay 0% on their capital gains (thanks to GW Bush).

Third, Everyone pays a tax rate on their short/long term capital gains, that includes you if you have a portfolio outside of your 401(k). So capital gains aren’t exclusive for Millionaires, you too can grow your wealth on gains of invested capital.

Just thought you should know the correct facts before going to the beach to protest. Knowing is half the battle

  • Who are these "rich" they want to tax and who decides what "rich" is? Occupiers? The Feds? Some committee somewhere?

People who might be considered "rich" in the Midwest (e.g. $70 - $120K incomes) would be solidly middle-class in San Francisco.

possibly related: I've also heard of homeless people making $100K salaries.
