The transit geeks over at CalStreets have figured out a hypothetical San Francisco to Los Angeles travel itinerary that uses public transit exclusively. Thanks to two new bus routes in Monterey, people looking to subject themselves to over 30 hours of travel time at the whims of seven different local transit agencies can (theoretically) do so at the low-low price of $45.25. There's a lot of room for error on a route that starts on the N-Judah and requires 14 transfers before ending up at LA's Union Station, but just think of the freedom you'll have when you don't need to book two weeks in advance. You'll still need to figure out how to kill 8 hours overnight in the Santa Maria Town Mall Transit Center, but at least you'll be able to bring full size shampoo if you feel like it. If you're still interested in the California public transit adventure of a lifetime, CalStreets has the full, detailed itinerary.
