Three-year-old Henry Tonts of Hayward eats fries from his Happy Meal at a San Francisco McDonald's on Monday. Cute, huh?

That being said, we're now the first major American city that requires fast-food restaurants to ban toys. (We should point out that the city will allow them "only if the recipes are tweaked to make them healthier." Which is inane. What kind of child wants to eat a healthy Happy Meal? That's like snorting a healthy bump of cocaine. It defeats the purpose entirely.)

The Chronicle's conservative columnist Debra Saunders, predictably, points out that we're now a city that cares more about our children than our crime rates. Or something like that.
