Bisexual Sex Worker Starchild Running for Supervisor Again
It wouldn't be an election year in SF without perennial underdog candidate Starchild in the race. Starchild is among a gaggle of candidates vying for Bevan Defty's seat on the Board of Supervisors in District 8, which is comprised of the Castro, Duboce Triangle, Dolores Park, Noe Valley, Diamond Heights, and Glen Park.
As the Bay Area Reporter reminds us, Starchild has run twice before against Dufty, and in the 2006 campaign he was also fighting prostitution charges after he was busted in a sting operation in a Fremont hotel. His campaign slogan? "Let's try freedom," because of course freedom is in short supply in the Castro.
This time around, Starchild faces several veteran local lawyers/politicos and a couple of unknown opponents: deputy city attorney Scott Wiener; assistant DA Rebecca Prozan; assistant general manager of the public utilities commission Laura Spanjian; local lawyer Rafael Mandelman; and largely unknown pro-business candidate William Hemenger, who perhaps over-excitedly quit his job at Oracle to join the race. All the candidates are LGB, basically, and the two women are trying to become the first women elected to the seat, which has been dominated by gay men like Dufty and Mark Leno.
The most hilarious part about the candidates' most recent debate was, of course, when Barbara Taylor, KCBS' longtime City Hall reporter, referred to Starchild as "Starfire."
